This customer brought the car into the shop for an intermittent no crank issue on his 1997 Toyota Camry. Customer stated that the car does nothing when it happens and if he turn the key on and off and few times the car will start.
I was able to get the car to act up after about 5 start-ups. The car did do something when the no crank condition was happening. It clicked when I turned the key to crank. The clicking was coming from under the hood and was quite noticeable. Since we recently covered the starter testing in the Automotive Weekly Waveform group I decided to grab the scope and get some captures.
Lets go over the captures together and then take apart the starter to see what caused the issue.

Most Harley-Davidson motorbikes use the Denso OSGR Light Duty too.

Chad, I really like the way you were able to get a test lead on the wire between the solenoid and the motor, it clinched the diagnosis. There are awesome design lessons hidden in the starter motor, every year I find new reasons for humility! This year I stumbled across the pico library of case studies, here www.picoauto.com/library/case-studies . The very first one of the list was a Ferrari no-start, and it raised the bar for my understanding. For some reason I never considered measuring current on the signal wire, and I am embarrassed to say I never properly understood the wiring of the pull/hold coils. In your study I admire the way you discuss swapping or cleaning contacts. Finding parts is the biggest obstacle, since few are willing to wait for special parts. Where do you order contacts?

You said the r&r time was .5 hr. What would your flat rate be for putting in the contacts? Where do you get the contacts? Do you ask for a starter service kit?

Book time was 0.8hr I believe. I would probably charge an extra 0.5 to swap in new contacts and clean everything up. I stock a verity of Toyota contacts but I do not stock the plunger. There are several placing to buy rebuild kits online including amazon. The reason the customer wanted a remanufactured Denso start installed was for the warranty if he travels out of the area.

Nice...Think the chop on the green trace at 3:55 is just normal contact “bounce”. Interesting autopsy. Thx & Cheers
