thank you so much for posting this! Great to see it again. And what a great journalistic piece from Kathy. This COP was a monumental shift for our sport, before being eclipsed by the future move to the open code. A lot of unfortunate shifts, with the most tragic imo being the combo of omitting compulsories + extra .4 bonus requirement for routine composition. Talk about a double whammy for killing artistry.
As challenging as this code might have been, The one that came after it was the one that made me really question the things were going in... I think it had a negative impact on the audience as well. The fans want to see high scores. I think it was disappointing for a lot of people to see scores in the 9.5 - 9.6 range (and even lower on vault) win medals.
The US team went through a rough phase after Magnificent 7 moved on. Had Vanessa Atler been allowed to compete here I believe she would’ve been a standout, probably the only time she would’ve been
I would argue had there been a world championships in 98, Atler would’ve done well there too. It was too bad the gymnasts didn’t have the proper support system they needed in order to thrive under that quad.
@@Cmc995 Yes, everywhere they turned they probably heard comparisons to the Mag 7. That quad was so rough, no gymnasts besides Moceanu had returned. The “new faces” were trying to find their own identity but struggled because they just didn’t have the experience or leadership from USAG. If only USAG had cultivated and nurtured the gymnasts, it might’ve been a completely different tune.
@@b0rtie I think she could have medaled on vault and possibly floor at a 98 worlds. I don't think she medals in the All Around or beam, but could be top 5 possibly if she stays on bars.
@@Cmc995 I don't think they were that talented. Atler was. Ray was somewhat talented, but not that much. Beckerman was beautiful but had no power at all, especialy in vaulting or tumbling, in addition to being a huge headcase. Maloney, Dantzscher, White, Thompson, Antolin were not that talented. Lindsay Wing and Sapunar were talented but two of the most injury prone gymnasts ever.
@QPHashSS77 The Chinese may have been victims to politics favoring Soviet Union, United States, Romania, and back in the 80s East Germany for awhile, but keep in mind the 2008 Olympics where both the men and women got big time overscored on home soil. They deserved most of their medals and golds, but there was still some eye raising scores.
I don’t think Lilia Podkopayeva could’ve adjusted to this code, really the only hard routine she had was on floor, her beam was too easy even when compared to other gymnasts in 1996
Even with it being the year after the Olympics with a new COP, a start value of 9.5 is really low. 97 was not a good year for her. 98 was probably her best year.
@@211jump so they broadcasted the TF with delay I guess. That's what I was hoping for, thank God ! I couldn't imagine gymnasts doing the AA twice the same day...
