@@MissLilRedRoostermaybe JUST maybe…and stay with me here…maybe it’s because men and women are DIFFERENT 🫢😲 men’s gymnastics is about showcasing their strength while being artistic meanwhile women’s gymnastics is mainly about artistic elements like flexibility and elegance, but that’s just me pointing out the CLEAR obvious
Wow...this announce team is SO good. I'm so used to Al Trautwig amd Tim Dagget and Elfi Schlegel saying ignorant, obnoxious things because Tim and Al in particular seem to only want to hear themselves talk. These people are so positive and so kind.
Bart and Kathy were the best in the business from the mid 80s until earlier this year, 2023. (Sadly Kathy Johnson Clarke retired from television commentary after the NCAA season in April.)
Breaks my heart to see Milo never have been AA champ, but she was shaky. Her reaction was so sad . And Dawes ...wow she was always her own enemy. But makes me happy Shannon defended her title!!
Even with her mistakes on bars and beam Milo should have won. She was underscored on floor and vault, and Miller was embarassingly overscored on every single event except maybe beam.
My opinion might be unpopular but I never liked Milo's actual gymnastics, atleast after 92. I admired her toughness and leadership but I did enjoy her gymnastics. As for these worlds she kind of choked. Her performance from the Team Worlds would have easily won the All Around here but she didn't come close to that on any event, except maybe vault. Even her floor routine which looks great had weaker landings compared to her routines from the prelims or Team Worlds, or even event finals here. Her bars and beam were really messed up, she could have done much better than she did. Miller had more limited prep due to injuries but was still tougher and more able to hit in the end than Milo and Dawes who came in with more momentum and tons of prep and strong competitions.
Milo getting 2nd in AA was right, however I thought she was robbed of floor finals gold. Although Kochetkova had superb tumbling and dance, Milo had more difficulty overall and the landings were more controlled. I would've had Milo first, Kochetkova second, Gina third
In the 90s, it seems, the acro and the artistic on the beam was very good. This was the best era for beam in my opinion. Dom Dawes routine was impressive with that long combo down the beam. I know that would not count much for connections, that's a stupid rule!
Dawes was the only gymnast that broke my heart to see her fall! Really broke my heart! I still won't watch the 96 Olympics aa! I wanted her to medal so badly.😢😢😢
The 96 AA was hard to watch in so many ways. I would say that the gymnasts in that competition that were strong medal contenders (eg. Roza Galieva, Dina Kochetkova, Lavinia Miloșovici, Simona Amanar, Gina Gogean, Dominque Moceanu, Svetlana Khorkina) were one of the most I've seen in an Olympics, with Lilia Podkopayeva, Shannon Miller, Mo Huilan, and Dominique Dawes as the gold medal contenders. So many of them either fell or gave away valuable tenths that cost them a medal (I was most sad about Mo Huilan, Roza Galieva and Dominique Dawes). On the otherhand, Lilia gave out beautiful performances (other than the significant leg bend on bars), and she fully deserved the win. She was the only reason why I was willing to watch the whole thing
R D I know :(. I made me feel so sick, especially since it happened to her at the world Championships the year before. So disheartening to watch. I felt so bad for her.
1994 had the most ridiculous formats for the World Championships. They actually had a separate World Team Championships apart from the individual competition in this video. Then the convoluted sessions format for the all-around, with no cutting of the field after the qualifying round!
I thought I was going insane but no, ABC did in fact play an Alice in Chains song during that Dominique Dawes fluff piece at 13:00... I've never been so shook in my life
It's convenient that all of Kochetkova's routines weren't shown.. (Did they just show her bars, or bars and floor?) Regardless, a strong case can be made for her winning the AA here. When I scored the top 3, I had Shannon and Dina tied.
It was a rough life for Romanian gymnasts. Being away from their families for the better part of their childhood probably killed them all a little inside. I'm not sure if it's still like that, they seem happier nowadays. Not the poor Chinese gymnasts though. That's got to be the absolute worst country for athletes to be from. I feel very sad for them, and I am always rooting for team China. Anyhoo, yes, Gogean looked perpetually devoid of any emotion whatsoever. Also always very thin, very pale and always looked like she hadn't slept in days. She makes me sad. She was an unbelievably talented athlete, though. One of the most consistent gymnasts ever.
Yeah that was a crazy score. If we say a tenth minimum for that big wobble on the side flip and a half tenth for the hop on the landing that is like saying the rest of the routine was worth a 9.987. The crazy thing is Miller was so overscored on almost every event she was still probably robbed of winning vs Miller, although neither probably deserved it.
This was truly one of the worst judged AA events in history. Crazy undeserved scores would include Miller's 9.75 on floor, Miller's 9.812 on vault, Milo's 9.837 on beam, Podkopayeva's 9.837 on beam, Mo's 9.9 on bars (love her and the routine but badly short on one handstand, major form break on the transition and hop on landing), Gogean's 9.775 on beam (considering she had only a 9.9 start value). Miller's win was ridiculous. The final results should have been Kochetkova gold, not sure for silver but maybe Milo, and bronze hard to say maybe Gogean or Khorkina who was brutually underscored on almost every event or Miller.
So many ridiculous scores. Shannon's floor and vault scores. Milo's beam score. The real results should have been: 1. Kochetkova 2. Milo 3. Gogean 4. Miller
For everyone complaining and saying this was so much better than today’s gymnastics… the sport has evolved, changed and developed- get over it. For those saying certain people were overscored and didn’t deserve medals, get off your lazy mouthy duffs and go become judges… otherwise you’re just biased hypocrites.
Some ridiculous scoring. Miller's 9.8 on vault was a disgrace. Milo's 9.837 on beam with those mistakes was questionable too. Miller's floor score far too high considering that mistake she was not deducted for. Just questionable and biased scoring all around. Kochetkova or Milo should have won. Miller bronze at best. Khorkina was undermarked and Podkopayeva overmarked. Terrible scoring.
Dominique should have went to Stanford for her education and skipped the 1996 Olympics. A great education is invaluable worth far more than gold & bronze plated medals.
Particularly by self proclaimed “expert” fans who feel they know it all- people like you. If you are such an expert become a judge, otherwise you’re just a hypocrite.
And you are someone that the world could care less about. Shannon is a legend in the sport, an icon looked up to by countless others for decades. You are an afterthought.
I really shouldn’t comment on it but I don’t care for the way Dominique is always crying, you rarely saw Shannon or even Kerri cry over a mistake they just tried harder on the next one
You're right; probably didn't need to publicly judge people for how they handle their personal setbacks. If teenaged girls want to be upset over failing to perform to their personal standards after dedicating most of their childhood to sport, then who am I to judge their reactions? They put a lot of their heart and soul into this so emotions will run high.
You would be correct- you DON’T need to say garbage like that. If a young girl who’s dream has just been derailed showing emotion bothers you, I’d suggest seeing a psychologist- you clearly need help.
Looking back, I think Dominique probably had anxiety issues. Several years at nationals she would be in the auxiliary gym, training alone..crying...she had a lot of things to deal with that others didn't. Parents separation, a brother with special needs...she's said her coach wasn't kind and knew how to behave when she had a microphone on. Not to mention, her ankles were shot. Both were in casts after the 1992 Olympics. It's ok to cry when you're sad or frustrated.
Ridiculous overscoring for Shannon Miller and underscoring for her competitors. Shannon's bars was very good but Milosovici's floor was clearly better than Shanon's bars. Yet Milo gets only a 9.812 on floor to Shannon's 9.85 on bars, ridculous. It should be Milo with a 9.85 atleast on floor and only a 9.8 for Shannon on bars. Shannon did that vault super crappy, especialy the first, and got the same score as Milo who did hers way better with much better landings. A farce. Shannon made a bad mistake on floor and wasnt deducted at all. Then Dina was underscored vs both Shannon and Milosovici. Milo made a couple big mistakes on beam and still got a 9.837 while Shannon got 9.862 for a clean but watered down set. Dina did an awesome beam and got a 9.775. And a lower bars score than Shannon for that great routine and even though Shannon couldnt buy a handstand to save her life anymore. A total joke all around, and a farce fixed win for Shannon she should be ashamed of.
Yet again I find you upset over a win by Shannon. Every bloody video where Shannon has won a medal, you get butt-hurt over it. Grow up! It's in the past. Shannon deserved a big chunk of her medals. I agree, she was overscored at some points, but she was truly great. She wasn't able to train full-time during these championships because of an injury but she still came out with two gold medals. Please, Tim Duggal, shut the fuck up, grow up, and enjoy the gymanstics.
Handstands were not as scrutinized at this point in time. Shannon was scores fairly on every event. Her floor was a tenth lower than it would otherwise have been without the improvised last pass. Also, Mo got 9.90 on UB and Milo 9.837 on B.B. with at least two tenths if noticeable errors. That’s the real farce. But yes Dina was slightly underscored.
You cannot compare scores on one apparatus to the other because they scoring criteria are so different, and its a different panel of judges. You can only compare bars to bars, vault to vault, etc. For this era's CoP, and the typical method of judging on bars in particular, I think Miller was scored very fairly. However, I will agree that Miller was overscored on the floor exercise. She clearly had a huge mistake (almost fell) and the judges gave her a 9.750. That's absurd because that one mistake alone should have been at least a .3 deduction (bring her score down to 9.700, plus additional tenths here and there). Even in this code, that routine should have scored no higher than 9.600 in my opinion. Having said that, Milosovic was also overscored on floor as well. She had a pretty obvious mistake on her final pass (not as bad as Miller, but still noteworthy). She did not complete that triple full (or at least it was very questionable) and therefore should have not only gotten .1 off in execution, but her start value should have gone down by .1 as well (to a 9.900). She also had problems in all three of her passes but scored a 9.812...how? Dominique Dawes with the same start value took a only a step on her final pass and scored less (9.800). Milosovic's score should have been no higher than 9.700 to me.
