Paul Johnston expresses his disappointment with the aesthetic design of the 1998 Honda CB 1000.
However, he embarks on a journey down the road, eager to discover whether the motorcycle can redeem itself through its exceptional performance and handling, ultimately winning him over despite his initial reservations.

I bought my '94 in June 1993 (US) Still riding it. I enjoyed seeing a video review of a '98 that looks just like my '94.

The CB1000 has monster dominant styling. This bike screams brute force. No sissy fins. When people see it they say "that's a real motorcycle".

Yea but little weak for 1000

I owned one of these back in the day. It was a fun bike for riding around town, but it was pretty gutless for a 1000. Suspension was soft crap. Odd tire sizes. My gearbox was standard, 1 down 4 up. Someone's reversed the shift linkage on this one. Still fun to ride...just not out on the highway or taking a trip.

I love the design of this bike.

It never ‘took off’ because the British motorcycle press buried it in ‘93 this bike is the grandfather of the retro market a special design project initiated by mr Honda himself nicknamed project big one.... as the British bike press were still stuck in the race rep area of the market back then when this thing appeared they stood around and scratched their heads unable to understand its application, this bike has a cult following everywhere else...... except here.... this has driven the second hand prices down which is sad as there are less than 200 of these in the UK ! It is the forerunner of the CB13 and the CB1100 without this bike there would be no GSX or Bandit etc yet it is totally overlooked. Thank you British motorcycle press.....

There is a small cult following in the UK; I wanted one since I saw the moody Honda advert of a black model in Bike mag. Finally managed to find a dog eared but sound 93 UK model a couple of years ago and after much tidying and a few subtle upgrades it is a fantastic bike.

Yep, classic lines and functional 90s Honda engineering - it doesn't get better than that!

I actually always wanted one and I love the look of the engine. The only fault I find with mine is the serious lack of sporting rubber in an 18" wheel size. By the way, I fixed mine from a wreck and had it painted a Honda white.

I like it a lot and wish that I had one. A good, basic big. standard retro bike with Honda build quality and reliability...yeah. but I'm driving a '97 Black bird so I'm good.

LOL !! The gear shifter is on up side down... Somebody has removed it and re-installed it incorrectly. The part that grips the gear shift teeth needs to be moved 90 degrees.

+thestar111 True! Never heard of a bike with the shifter upside down... That shows how "expert" this guy is... And gives reviews... Right!

Hmm I'm back looking at this review again, guess I want a CB1000. This guy knows his bikes and the only reason I know the gear shift is on wrong is because I put one on wrong and found out the shirt turned 1 up 5 down

No they're not. I have one of these and that gear-shifter is installed incorrectly - it needs moving 180dg.

Have one of these bikes myself and love it .White and red colours. The gear change is the same as all other bikes - 1 down , , 4/5 up ( some muppet must have fitted the gear change mech the wrong way lol )

Underpowered and top heavy absolute joy to ride and lasts forever definitely one of Honda's "best ever" going very much against the Brand as well. Agree never once tempted to go over 100mph on this one but cruises very well at 80mph and can do all the work yourself with everything right where it should be and easy to get at. CB1100x "Balckbird" is the only attempt Honda made at making a true "retail super bike" i imagine to compete with Suzuki Hayabusa and definitely would take the Honda a Hayabusa every time. This one i imagine trying to one up Kawasaki which i agree "underpowered" especially compared to that...has a better look book than an 1100 Kawasaki but don't know why that is other than definitely *"is."*

why reverse gear shift? it makes no sense. may as well twist forward on throttle instead of back. There is no good reason for being counter-intuitive to muscle memory.

At 0:40 & 3:22 we see someone has fitted those stainless braided brake lines...but failed as they have way too much slack, and/or the fittings off the master have the wrong angle...but at 0:40 we see the brake lines sticking out past the headlight...fail.
