1998 Jeep Cherokee XJ Cheap Cooling Mods

Like most aging XJs, mine is running hot at trail speeds. For some reason the auxiliary electric fan isn't coming on and the mechanical fan shroud is MIA. Im going to try to improve the cooling by eliminating the mechanical fan and replacing it with an electric fan and then hook both fans up to run constantly in the run position of the ignition switch. #jeeplife #shadetreemachanic #wrencheveryday

That missing fan shroud makes a huge difference

I bought a 96 Cherokee new. During the first year I was on a fire road that was a bit steep but nothing to think about but it went on for awhile. Noticed the same symptoms you described. Outside temp was around 86 give or take. So I turned the ac off and opened the heater. This was adequate enough to get to the top. I let it idle with the hood up for a bit then that was it. Going home was no biggee. But I knew I had to do something but due to work and other things I never got around to it. Other offroad ventures gave me no problems. Unfortunately due to an accident, I had to sell it to my bill. I loved that jeep, maybe to much. Been 20 years and I still miss it.

I had a 96 new as well, but never had the opportunity to really off road it. The cooling systems were always the weak link on these IMO, especially as they age. The rads are just too small.

If you have a properly working clutch fan and shroud it will pull more air than most electric fans. I run stock clutch fan on my 97 Cherokee with 33's and stock electric fan that kicks on at 210. Mind you it has 256k miles and never get past 215 on heavy trail riding. Leading people to think clutch fans are not enough is a false statement. If you have a properly working cooling system and a properly working clutch fan you should not have any issues.
@mikecarr1484
@mikecarr1484 3 года назад
And the mechanical original one with a shroud works best. But it eats horsepower and lugs the engine. Only reason I went electric. Mine never goes past 210. 210. That's it. Anymore and I am not happy. So I keep coolant fresh. Radiator clean. Fans working and good oil. I hear people running up to 240 .. dumb dumb dumb .. stupid move transmission likes 200 degrees .. so try to keep that temp. I use a 185 degree thermostat. As opposed to the 192 degree it comes with stock.. it helps too.
@mikecarr1484
@mikecarr1484 3 года назад
Go buy a 185 degree thermostat.. it opens up the radiator earlier. Stock fan with shroud and ac fan also has to be working . It kicks in at 220 so if you do get hot it helps. Or it also kicks in once you turn on defrost or ac.

The fan isn't on while you're running the ac, its building up too much pressure in the ac system and blowing it off. You have to have the fans running when your ac is on

The ac condenser was causing my Jeep to over heat. I ripped it off and it ran cooler. Ac condenser gets full of bugs and dirt so restricts airflow.

I agree, my 2000 has AC but the condenser is missing, even here in AZ where it just was 116 I run 204 down the highway yes the condenser is restricting air flow

The A/C fan should come on immediately when the A?C is on. The pressure is most likely too high because it can not cool the freon. Check the switch on the T-stat housing.

XJ e-fan doesn't come on until temp reaches 218° afaik. This guy really should have just gotten a new shroud. The mechanical fan should work just fine for normal driving even in 90°+ F weather.

THIS is valuable video. For those who can't just throw money at a problem, THIS guy actually owns a Jeep lol. From your WTF moment, to "well, worked itself out, so moving on..." you're pretty legit. Thanks for the info! '98 with the 5.2 (mabye... that's a story..) just now looking into options for an E-fan swap from the mechanical, since at least, the clutch isn't adjustable. Mine's a ZJ, but the details you share aren't really specific to the model. Curious whether 2-3 smaller fans would be better vs a single maxed size against the radiator total size..

Hey now thats a great idea I have two fans that I picked up at U Pull it in brandywine Md. . Now I'm going to attempt to put a regulator fuse so I can have it run about 3 to 5 minutes after turning off the engine. Think that could be possible . ??
@cjhawk67

230f is within spec for these engines thats totally fine. The efan from the factory doesnt even come on until 221f. Anything below 240f is completely fine my red 96 had 536k miles all original with the original cooling system operating within those temperatures.
@cjhawk67
@cjhawk67 3 года назад
Also I've spoken to one of the pro king of hammers racers that runs a XJ race jeep Cal and he's told me there is no electric fan setup that moves the kind of CFM that the metal clutch fan with the shroud can move. A real upgrade would be keep the metal clutch fan but replace the clutch with a ZJ one is more aggressive and moves even more air.

As an technition . I know that the ac is getting too hot and not circulating. It is over pressuring and pushing past the safety valve on the compressor .

Dude. Amazon has direct fit electric fan replacements.. 50 bucks. They fit inside the radiator cavity and pull air as it is supposed to. Having it zip tied one inch away does nothing. The shrouds help . What you have done will fail and leave you stranded.

@@dzlfreek Yeah but it's "as designed". According to the service manual the auxiliary fan doesn't come on until the temp goes over 217 degrees and then shuts back off when it cools back down to 208 degrees. That is in line with what mine is doing.

adding an second electric fan makes ALL the difference even with AC all is good and this is mostly right the XJ was designed for a FOUR Cylinder motor FOUR liter 6 and making High horse power the under hood temperature is very high and COOKS the battery the best things to do for Cooling is to get the trans cooler out of the radiator put one in front use and electric fan and move the battery , out of from under the hood these mods may sound silly but each one works i have done these and Cut the problems of over heating and doubled the life of the battery My battery tray and box is in the floor pan in the back seat passenger side Ty ed down

Instead of putting both on constant which will really delay warm up why not put the A/C fan as constant on and the main on a switch so you can turn it on as needed after reaching operating temp. that way you can turn it on on the trails and off on the highways.

Brand New Clutch Fan and Shroud along with one New Electric Fan is all that's needed. The Clutch Fan in the Blue Jeep is Junk i can see it spinning for at least 90 sections after you shut off the Jeep and it also needs a Shroud. If your Jeep gets hot enough the Electric Fan you say only runs when the Air Conditioner is on ALSO RUNS WHEN THE JEEP GETS HOT ENOUGH. Electric Fans are not the answer. Antifreeze not water helps cool in the summer and helps with heat in the winter months. Your. Just be glad it's not the Evaporator under the Dash worst Job on an XJ. Tear out the Dash same goes for Heater Core.
