A mechanic was going to charge me $50 each to change out my headlights. And then said he couldn’t do it because I have a brush guards, and the bumper would have to be removed. After watching your video, I change them both in five minutes, with no tools. Thank you!

Wow, never thought about that! I remember replacing my in the 1997 jeep grand cherokee and forgot they pressed in like that. I wanted to replace bulbs but rings were locked in so I used your method to pull them out. Showed my daughter, since its her car. I used the little suction cups I bought at harbor freight and they worked perfect. This saved me so much time and had new LED bulbs in swiftly after the pull. Thanks for sharing.

THANK YOU, this is a genius hack! Only 1 suggestion...DO NOT remove the old plastic retaining clip from the top posts. The reason it's hard to pull off the post (without breaking) is because it was installed from the back of the post and was designed to stay there. However, the new headlight assembly comes with a plastic retaining clip, already installed - but it appears to have a smaller inner diameter than the original retaining clip. This makes installation difficult.

I tried this method on my '97 - pulled the lens clean off the headlight! I guess they were further gone than I'd realized. Sadly, after I'd pulled off the passenger side lamp, the top retention clip was stuck on, and when I yanked on it with some pliers, the clip was stronger than the headlight mount - which it turns out is part of the header panel . Debating between spending $50 on a new header panel or $5 on some JB Weld LOL. Appreciate your channel, and the help in keeping stuff going!

The plunger idea worked great and saved a lot of time. I gave up on the new plastic clips that came with the new lights and used the old ones instead... a bear to get out, but made of a more rubber-like plastic that made reassembly easy. I had to cut two of the mounting prongs from each old clip to get it off the old lights, but that did not affect their use in the new lights. A little grease on the mounting prongs made it easy to remount. A little black duct tape from the lights to the top cross member just for insurance makes it a true Red Green project :-)

@ForestToFarm

Bummer. It worked great for us. The plunger is very old. I think the new rubber is less soft and maybe that caused it not to get suction? Hard to say. Maybe a person could try wetting the plunger first to create more suction? Thanks for the report on your demise. Nothing is full proof I guess. :) Terry

Just did this repair on my '96 ZJ and had a problem aligning the 3 mounting posts with the connectors in the lamp. Two of the three posts are meant to wiggle around a little because they are for the headlamp adjustment. Not having good visibility around the headlamp or a way to reach behind to line up the posts made it really difficult. Also, even after removing the corner lamp, the lower connector on one of the the new headlamp broke and I had to re-use a connector from the original (getting that connector out of the old headlamp was a chore). Eventually, I had to take out the corner lamp housing on both sides to be able to align the posts. I love the plunger idea, but for people like me where Murphy's Law rules, removing the corner lamp might actually be easier. You might need a flashlight to see the lower screw in the corner lamp, and a Torx driver with a narrow shaft would be ideal. I used a bit driver but the thicker shaft was very difficult to squeeze between the gap in the lamps to access the lower screw.

@georgelaun1346
@georgelaun1346 2 года назад
My experience also. Took more than four hours. The old assemblies are very hard to remove. Too much for the plunger. Two broken parts that secure the assembly to the posts. Big job salvaging two parts from the old assemblies. The last long screw took close to an hour to get it in. I had to remove the two other lights had to be removed so I could see to align to the posts. Alignment is not easy. There was no way to just slam the assembly in without carefully see to align. DO NOT TRY TO SLAM THE ASSEMBLY IN!

@@ForestToFarm cool. I have since acquired my '95 ZJ two months ago, and for father's day my wife got me two new headlight assemblies. Just an FYI... @3:15 in the video the “knob/connector”in the bottom left, is ONLY mounted into the “plastic”, where as the other two connector/mounts are backed into metal. The bottom knob connector/mount can break through the plastic when remounting the headlights. This becomes problematic because that whole piece runs the length of the front of the Jeep and is not easily replaceable and thus becomes a nightmare. We are currently trying to replace the drivers side light (rock went into it and broke lens) and the connector/mount broke through the plastic and we were being very cautious...

So I drove down an old back road near by where it was dark and they were doing great so we did not do any further adjustment. Of course, this requires one of those crappy ineffective plungers. Or stealing the suction cup from your wife's wig stand. I really need to order an assortment of suction cups. Useful for tons of things. But for many of this, it's not a savings of 15 minutes - it takes me longer than that to round up my tools. And there's the inevitable part that breaks when you remove it, like the turn signal cover that's cracked with age. Then there's the 15 minutes looking for the screw we dropped. I'm betting your method knocks 45 minutes off the hour I would piss away on this project.

Right now it feast so we work hard. I am pretty sure we will see a break soon and then the fun begins. Hope you do not leave because we are to busy to work on the land. This entire concept of our channel is based on the real world where we actually have to work for a living. We are going to make this happen. Its just taking a little time. I can assure you though we will be posting more repair videos of any type we may be doing at the time. Like I said its part of our life and part of the real world we live in.
