Had my 99 996 since new with 73 thousand on the speedo in Porsche Metallic Blue with grey leather interior. Great car and I have always liked the gt1 headlights. Hands down better than any of 3 Ferraris I had!
I do wish everyone would remain quiet about how great the 996 is so everyone will just keep yelling IMS and keeping them cheap so I can keep having fun with them.
The gen 1 headlights are so much nicer than the gen 2. Gen 2 look like Sally from the Pixar movie. I love my gen 1 lights, and when you look head on you can still see the frog eye's Magnus your video just probably saved 996 from a virus price crash ( maybe) Funny thing is if you've no plans on selling you don't really care what it's worth, just how much fun it is.
Completely agree on the headlight comments. Gen 2 headlights actually made the 996 look worse in my opinion. Gen 1’s were clean and well integrated....
I bought an excellent condition 996.1 about 13 years ago for a ridiculous price. It had 26k miles on it. I took a look at the seller's market today and the prices for 100k miles are even more than what I paid years ago. Glad to see the 996 getting the love it deserves.
Prediction: Now that Magnus has made a video about a ”fried egg “ 996, all hipsters will abandoned their air-cooled 911s and the price of 996s will go through the roof!
It will definitely encourage people into the 996 platform. Not sure anyone would give up their air cooled 911 for one but they may buy one to sit next to it
Great Vid Magnus. I just bought a 10.97 RHD 6 Manual Carrera 2WD in Arctic Silver Metallic. It has the standard suspension and I just changed the mounts to 993 RS semi solids ... it handles like on rails, and accelerates like a scalded cat. The 3.4 is a sweet and very revvy motor. Have owner a 71 T, a 930 and a 2.7 MFI Carrera before this, and I must say this car trumps them ALL for smile per mile.... I know it's fashionable for Porsche folk to hate 996's, but I am pinching myself to have bought such an amazing hard driving sports car for the price of a Toyota Yaris GR .... GO the 996 !!!!
Very nice video, nice car and nice road. Thank you Magnus. I just (December 2023) bought a 1999 996.1 with an aero kit in guards red with 47 k miles in mint conditions (a 2+ according to Classic data ), like the car from Magnus. In addtition, my car has the WLS (factory power kit, option X51), which brings the engine up to 320 HP, as well as the 18'' GT3 wheels (option XLR). Further, the car is equipped with a lot of options from the Porsche Exclusive Manufactur, e.g. Alcantara steering wheel, Alcantare roof and full leather interior with guard red stitching . Although the car is in collector conditions, I bought it for driving. In Germany we have still some remote areas with twisty backroads, where you can squeeze out a car without violating the German speed limit. So, I plan to do some Hyphen rallys in 2024, as well a a trip or two to the Nürburgring. PS. Hyphen rally is named after Derek Tam-Scott from the Carmudgeon Show (see episode # 50).
Ça va, Magnus? Thank you for showing some love for this model. Like every Porsche, this model has some unique qualities. Although it might be under appreciated, I believe we will see a resurgence in reverence for these cars in years to come. For now though, they are a nice way to get into a Porsche for low cost. Cheers!
Sounds grrrrrrrreat dude! I know you bought this one as is, but do you know what exhaust setup it's running? Sounded awesome round that swooping open corner that I've seen on so many of your vids and that Sharkwerks drifting vid from a while back. #getoutanddrive more to give us 🏴 Scots something to watch and listen to, during out continuing Lockdown 😎👌🏼🙏🏼
I own a 987.1 Cayman this is one of my dream locations. Maybe when all of this Covid calms down I’ll have to take a trip from Salt Lake City, UT. To check out this canyon. Love your work Magnus!
The ugly duckling 996... but in the end it’s a real PORSCHE and important history. Your’s really reminds me to the Viper’s design. Never saw the similarities before. 90’s!!!
Magnus, you mentioned you have Ohlins in this car, are these the Ohlins Road & Track coilovers? I would love to add these to mine, so would be very interested to know if you feel they are OK for a street / fast road car, or would you describe it as too firm / crashy for a road car?
From traditional 911 design language point of view the 1st gen 996's exterior design just isn't pure enough. However, from automotive design point of view, both the practical and theoretical sides of its design can be said to be the best 911 exterior design. And the 1st gen 996 also has the best overall handling of all the generations inc. the current 992 gen.
Nanami Setsuko how do you do that? Maintain your cars so well where they lasts that long? I dont know much about cars but a popular notion is anything over 100k is suspect. Idk how i would feel about buying something with high miles need best bang for my buck you know
@@noone-vt2hn so long as I can buy the parts ill fix it myself. A lot of old cars can be easily maintain because less electrical things can go wrong. I do like modern cars but harder to maintain, less value once you drive them off the dealer lot, and lots of electricals that can go wrong.
Art Vandelay they may settle originally but when you own and drive one, that’s when you realise you’ve hit the jackpot ‘bang for buck’ 👌🏼 awesome car 👍🏼
I had a 986 with the 2.7L swapped in in guards red. The paint was rough, as it seen it's fair share of use and track days. But seeing your 996.1 shinning in that guards red makes me miss my poor hard life boxster. I've been a fan of your creations and opinion on P-cars ever since the Urban Outlaw video debut and was so pleased to hear your opinions on the Boxster. Now I am awaiting delivery on my 2nd P-Car, and very close to my obtainable dream car spec. A 987.1 Cayman S.
It's a shame that a bunch of the old 101 disappeared, that was one helluva drive in 1994. 2 lanes right on the coast. Drove that from LA, all the way up to Monterey. I was sweating bullets in the blind corners.
Would be interested in what the Ohlins are like? I need to replace a rear shocker and wondering whether to go all the way and get some Ohlins? 🤔 Great vid Magnus, just another confirmation that 996.1 was the right choice for me 👌🏼😊
