On his Sunday show on September 26, 1999 Mike Francesa had ripped Mets manager Bobby Valentine during the course of a six game losing streak that saw the Mets in danger of losing the wildcard race in the NL. (see this 1999 Newsday article www.newsday.com/sports/media-m... for full details). This was the first "Manager's Report" interview of Valentine by Francesa and Russo after that tirade two days later. Ultimately, the Mets would right themselves and win the NL wildcard in a playoff with the Reds.

You have to take into consideration as well, that not only did the Mets almost choked the wildcard in 1999, but in 1998 they choked the wildcard by losing the final 5 games. So to see it almost happen again in 1999, it was just incredible. Then it happened in 2007 and 2008 back to back

You have to respect Mike and the Mad Dog for the fact that they weren't afraid to say things directly to people they talked about. I would have to think the people respected that about them as well. Incredibly direct interviews, especially compared to the fluff of this day and age, but not disrespectful. Just holding the sports figures of their town accountable. Refreshing.

1999 the second stint for Bobby Bonilla as a Met.. I'm so glad he took them to the wood shed the fans didn't treat him right the first time around from 1992-1995

even though the 2000 mets went to the series the 1999 team was the best met team of that era

The Golden Age of Sports Talk Radio. I hope it returns to this, but I doubt it, and the difference between now and then is so simple. Today's talk show hosts do not take calls. They babble, and babble, and babble, and babble about the most useless of things. As for this clip, in the end, the 99 Mets did make the playoffs and remain a popular team to those who truly follow the organization. I always liked Bobby. When I met Lasorda, who Bobby mentions in this clip, on my stoop that was across from Bamonte's Restaurant in Brooklyn and told hiim I was a Met fan, Tommy's words were: "You got my two boys on your team - Valentine and Piazza and you guys will be alright." In the end, Lasorda was right.

the over analyzing and meaningless nonsense all these talking head shows do today is pathetic especially the younger generation of hosts
