I was 19 when the WNBA debuted. I stayed glued to the TV. I'd love to see the very first 3 Seasons again. Loved seeing many of the now Hall of Famers. Kisha Ford (from N.Y. Liberty) is a Police Officer now. RIP Kim Perrot (wow almost 18 years, you left us)

Believe me, I was very interested in the WNBA when it came out in 1997. Although, I was still glued to the NBA, the WNBA really got me looking forward to games. Heck, even Lifetime of all channels broadcast games!

There are five Naismith Hall of Famers involved in this game: Tina Thompson, Sheryl Swoopes, Cynthia Cooper (the original Big Three!), Comets head coach Van Chancellor, and Teresa Weatherspoon, who hit the buzzer-beater. A sixth Hall of Famer, Rebecca Lobo, was a member of the Liberty but missed the 1999 season after tearing her ACL in the first game of the season.

Man what a dream team the Comets were. I found this while randomly thinking about the Comets and how ridiculous it is they’re no longer part of the league. I followed the WNBA from 2002-2008, so it’s cool to see a glimpse of the league before I was a fan. Thanks for the upload!

That's what I remember about game 3 of this series was that the Comets finally clinching the title was extra emotional because it was in honor of Perrot. The following year, the Comets clinching was emotional because it was Cynthia Cooper's final game. And she hit a game winning shot, going out like Mike.

This just might have been the greatest game the WNBA will ever see, and couldn't have had a more dramatic ending. Too bad nothing really came of it for the Liberty, and only merely delayed the inevitable when the Comets bounced back, and regrouped to win the deciding Game #3. But it was still an epic series, and when the WNBA was seemingly far more relevant, and an interesting novelty worth checking out, unlike now.

The Summer of My Freshmen Year of HS. Coach used to take us across the water to the Liberty Games. We where one of the teams of younger players who had an opportunity to be back in the hallways near the locker rooms. On Court at MSG, getting the game balls from the players before the game. I remember meeting Nikki McCray (RIP) she was so funny and nice to us. Stopping to take mad pics with us before the game. Kym Hampton legit my idol! She was a beast when healthy! At that time, Kym was 36 yo, Still #9 in NCAA Rebound History Books!!!! Meaning she graduated 15 years prior. Ann Myers was definitely hating on Kym this ENTIRE Broadcast!!!!! MAD RESPECT to my fellow #RAMily Fordham Alumni Mike Breen for giving Kym her Props!!! #GoRams Wish Kym could have gotten that Double 10pts 10 boards........ Back to Ann Myers' hateration of Kym.... off Kym's turnover in the second half, Ann says, Kym's indecision to make a move inside caused the turn over.... CLEARLY Ann neglected to see FOUR of Houston Players crashed down on Kym. As soon as she touched the ball! 3 of the 4 being Houston's Big Three! WTF Ann want Kym to do? All game a HURT Kym Hampton was getting double and triple team as soon as she touched the ball! Kym made a strong move to the basket in the open series, Ref called a travel on Sis! In replay, THERE WAS NO TRAVEL! When Kym made her And 1 in the 2nd half, Ann aint say much. I'm intrigued to know, whats Ann's Beef with Kym? I remember watching this game with my Grandma. Sitting on the foot of her bed, when T Spoon hit that shoot, I yelled at the top of my lungs! Crystal Robinson was ballin, Tina Thompson was Ballin, Swoop's was FAST AF!!!! A Rook Becky Hammon was Cold! This was a great game! The W games used to be PACKED!!!!! These women were my basketball idols! Crazy how life works and many of these players, I am able to dial up and hit their lines directly. God Thank You for the Sisterhood of Women's Basketball!!!!

Thank you for uploading the full game of game 2 of the 1999 WNBA Championship/Finals!! :-) I do not believe any shots in the NBA, given the context and atmosphere of this game, could compare to this WNBA Championship/Finals game. A sellout crowd at the Compaq Center, confetti falling down prematurely, noise and passion that can rival any NBA postseason game, and the final 20 or so seconds of that game with the New York Liberty's chances of a championship on the line or a Houston Comets 3-peat and sweep to honor the late Comets guard Kim Perrot that passed away during the 1999 season What do you think? Do you agree or disagree that Ray Allen's shot in game 6 of the 2013 NBA Finals was better than Weatherspoon's shot? Do you believe there are any NBA Finals shots that are at par or exceed hers?
@billny33
@billny33 8 лет назад
I agree with you. Ray Allen's shot was amazing, and the one thing people who make that argument that Allen's shot was better can say that it helped Miami win a title and the Liberty still lost this title, but no. This was the most amazing basketball finish ever, even if the WNBA has lost so much of its relevance and clout and doesn't mean much to me anymore. Back then, the NBA did so much to make WNBA games look and feel just as exciting as the NBA right down to having Mike Breen, call the championship game. And boy did he deliver one of the great calls for that buzzer beater. Gives me chills. Mike was on his game. I would have to say that any NBA fan old enough to have maybe been in attendance in 1970 for game 3 of that Finals in the forum, Jerry West hit a 60 foot shot to tie a game against the Knicks at the buzzer which forced overtime. But the Lakers lost that game. I would have to imagine that also had to be an electrifying moment but the films that exist of it do not do justice to the moment. And it did not stave off elimination, nor did it win the game. But it's the most similar NBA scenario I can think of.
@BrownBrother27
@BrownBrother27 8 лет назад
Being a fan of both leagues I'm reminded of these shots that could be argued as better than T-Spoon's shot with the context included: Vinnie Johnson's title winning shot in the 1990 NBA Finals, Michael Jordan's title-clinching steal and game winner in the 1998 NBA Finals, Hakeem Olajuwon's game winning tip in game 1 of the 1995 NBA Finals, John Paxson's game (and championship) winning 3 in the 1993 NBA Finals. I think the WNBA Championship/Finals has a good share in clutch moments with their contexts considered: Deanna Nolan's 3-pointer late in game 3 of the 2003 WNBA Finals, Maya Moore's game winning 3 in the 2015 WNBA Finals, Nikki Teasley's game (and Finals) winning 3 in the 2002 WNBA Finals, Sue Bird's game winner in game 1 of the 2010 WNBA Finals, Cappie Pondexter's game winning shot in game 4 of the 2007 WNBA Finals. Regardless, I think the WNBA postseason has its spectacular moments that fans of the NBA and other major 3 leagues (i.e. NHL, NFL, MLB) overlook. The current state of the WNBA is more financially stable, but that comes at the cost of franchises being relocated or fold and attendance dropping significantly. However, I heard that the 1999 NBA lockout played a role behind the WNBA's attendance drop.
@billny33
@billny33 8 лет назад
I guess if you wanted to say any game winning shot in the Finals that led to their team winning the championship was better than Weatherspoon's because her team lost the Finals you could make that case. But the way I see it, the degree of difficulty for this shot was off the charts! and while the Liberty didn't win, they staved off elimination in the most dramatic way possible. I think Jerry West's shot in game 3 of the 1970 Finals is comparable as that came from midcourt at the buzzer also. But, his Lakers lost that game in overtime and the series as well. At least the Liberty won this game. Ray Allen's shot may be comparable like you said earlier though. I have not followed the WNBA through the years like you have. I know about Teasley's 3 in 2002, after that not much. I do know Cooper hit a 3 in game 2 of the 2000 Finals to force overtime, an ot the Comets would win to clinch their 4th straight title. And it was Cooper's final career game. That has to count for something on the timeline as well.

You guys see how the production value dropped after this era? A young but certainly beyond capable Mike Breen, and whoever was the video producer certainly knew what they were doing - anything after 2010 (and probably earlier) comes across the screen like a Division II college game and I think that has killed the marketing more than anything. It didn't have to be a women vs men thing; even as a 18 year old kid I saw this as another league I could follow, and this game in particular was super exciting. Now I watch a game and it's like 😐 and that is a production problem, imo
@billny33
@billny33 Год назад
Totally agree. Very astute analysis. WNBA could have been huge. I also think they lost a lot of momentum after the NBA stopped financially supporting the league. Having complimentary WNBA teams in cities that had NBA teams with really solid jersey and logo design really did a lot to boost the league, plus giving the league's new stars some solid commercials and quality ad campaigns, they were def onto something for a while there.
@soulchorea
@soulchorea Год назад
@@billny33 Thanks :) and yeah I forgot about the NBA financial support being a huge thing; that changes everything. And the jerseys/logo design! So many opportunities lost; there should be a 30 for 30 about this 😆
@billny33
@billny33 Год назад
@@soulchorea the Houston Comets started the league by winning the first 4 WNBA championships and having the best player in the league in Cinthia Cooper and a killer supporting cast. That is as legendary a dynasty as it gets. Now the Comets don't even exist. A top tier league in the late 2000s would never let that happen to a franchise so important to its development. It makes me sad that team just disbanded. Not even moved and given a new identity, just gone.
