This made me nostalgic. I used to have a green ZRT 800 while my buddy had this blue SRX 700. The oil he used smelled like strawberrys and I can almost smell it through the screen lol. I remember both machines where pretty fast trail sleds but the SRX felt more nimble for sure. Fun times.
I have always had a soft spot for an SRX even as a cat guy. I had a chance to run a SRX engined sxr with a few mods this weekends and realized that I want to keep my CFR1k for the lakes and trails for sure. It wasn't a contest. But what an amazing sled. Both of them actually.
More like a bunt single in this race!! Face it, the Yammer got its ass handed to it, and on a silver platter. Moral of the story, if you go hunting for another triple to race, don't go looking for one with a 300cc advantage, ferchrissakes!
@@milojanis4901 I would take the Yamaha any day over the Arctic Crap. Coming from someone who has seen more Kittys in the junkyard than anything. They are ok when they run though haha.
The SRX did really well. That speed difference really is much to worry about. across a long lake the t cat will get pretty far out ahead I'm sure. But on trials the better rider could still win on either sled.
Both triples that are featured in this video are winners in my book. I had a 97 VMAX700 added Bender Pipes, jettimg and clutching was done professionally(should have got the bender can instead😂rang out my R eardrum) loud asf. The twins beat me on the holeshot but I caught up and started walking away on those 15 miles drives especially on the straighways. Now I just got a barnfind single carb Jag440LT geared low(almost gets to 50) I call it my LoggingCat😂
considering the SRX is down 300 cc to the T-cat, it did well. The SRX 700 was at the top of its class, it shamed most every other 700cc sled, (and many 800cc sleds. Yamaha did well with the SRX-7, it was refined and fast. I have the Viper SX 700, (similar power-valve engine on single pipe set up) and makes my buds 670 Mach-1 look slow in comparison.
@@shelbytangusso2099 have 10,000 miles on one of my redhead vmax 700's. just got to 100 psi accross all 3! and I have never been easy on it. It is too much like a gokart on the trails so always gripping and ripping it lol. 4 years in a row it never saw a trail just lakes and fields
1999 700cc vs 2002 1000cc from the tripple war time. 700cc in loose snow vs 1000 in the packed. Seems fair. Anyhow, its grip and hp/kg stock. Best sound aside. Today we know which became most legendary and who makes the engines.
I just picked up a 2002 Mountain Max Deep Snow Special and can't wait to see what it can do. This will be my 1st sled. Not looking for crazy speed but more cruising.
I owned the 98 T-Cat, and the 01 SRX, at the same time, both of these sleds were the fastest they each made for those models, the 98 cat had triple in triple out exhaust, and was the fastest T-Cat until the 4 strokes took over, gotta say the SRX was unbelievable for a 700, but on a lake, the T-Cat would just keep walking away and it was only somewhat close for about 600 feet, ran thundecats for 10 years as well as the SRX, nothing came close to the Cat, unless it was another T-Cat, stock engines, those sleds would go 118-120 out of the crate, and everything else was lucky to see 110 stock, I don’t care what your buddy said his speedo said, or uncalibrated radar gun said, I watched it for 10 years every weekend at radar runs, Yamaha made the RX1 and stock the first year they made them they barely hit 100, then all the guys started dumping stage 3 turbos and nitris on them and $20 k later they were in the 130’s then that was enough for me, I wasn’t going to spend that kind of money on a sled to win a trophy or a ribbon, and maybe a coupe hundred bucks, even now top prize is like $4000 the money these guys put into these sleds far outweigh what they win.
Thanks for the info, you are in a rare group of owners. Thief River Fallls really outdid themselves when the Tcat came out, untouchable for how many years. What about a vmax 4? Not close i assume.
@@800horsegarage8greed on the vmax4 real heavy, my buddy had one as well, when my 98 Tcat was new, I never even saw him he was so far behind, even had it on VHS video, it was hilarious, but he was a gear head, and knew there was no replacement for displacement, and my SRX smoked him as well. The TCat came out in 93 as a 900, and that was the fastest 900 they made as well, stock for stock, they beat everything as well, I had 2 900’s then I got the 1000 in 98, the TCat was king until the RX1 came out with the turbos, then the 4 strokes took over.
I had a 97 VMAX Redhead... Now I got a barnfind 92 JAG440LT geared low(cousin did the clutchwork to match) Almost gets up to 50 but mainly I'm trapping, and coming back with a heavy sledload of Spruce logs intow. My cousin basically transformed it into a mini Tractor, damn thing can tow heavy loads with ease😁 sleds cost too much nowadays👍👍
@@garysmith8455 you have never ridden anything over a 600 then if you think that. ive owned multiple sleds that have done 120+ mph. 1 was an 800 twin. second was a 1000 turbo @138mph.
@@benfellows7469 I just watched SnowTrax TV where they ran a new Doo and Thundercat. Stock machines no alterations. The best they could get was 102 and 104 mph respectively in the HALF MILE ! This was with the Draggy. You can check that one out for yourself, worth watching and the comments are pretty telling. My Firecat is a 700-EFI and yes, the quickest sled I've owned. Top speed on it's digital speedo on a LONG lake in Old Forge NY, was 110. I figured probably really 98-100mph actual for the 140HP it is rated at. It IS a light sled at 476 lbs dry. Funny thing is, it's a 2004 I ordered new in '03 and only has 800 miles on it currently. Yeah, have not ridden much. Like to get back into it .
I’m a Polaris guy but damn I want an old thunder cat I have a “98 xcr 440 swapped with a xcr 800 engine got it all tweaked up cuz I raced last week and the only thing I couldn’t come close to was a thunder cat. Not gonna lie when I raced a Mach 1 he almost had me but I placed 2nd in my class and I’m glad the guy who placed 1st was also a Polaris😂
That sled you got must rip pretty good with that xcr 800 motor in it. Yeah If you can find a 1998 Thundercat they were the fastest stock. But if you build up any of the 1000cc cats they all scream!.
If it only would be a Srx-01. The engine in that year was more modified than the -98/99. Flywheel was lighter and some upgrades on ports and stuff if i recall it right
I remember beating up on srx's back in the day with my Thundercat. What amazed me was how they always expected to win?? And then accused me of somehow cheating when they lost! WTF?
Everyone who loves Yamaha is like yeah it did okay and only lost by a couple sled lengths Lol. It lost by 10 sled lengths in 10 seconds lol.. this is like racing a Chevy Malibu and a corvette. Srx was fast when compared to any twin but when compared to ZRT/thundercat/XCR/machz etc they are not in the same world
Gotta love it when they say I had a 600 twin and it did 117 in 1000ft. I have an old polaris 650 ,160 hp and the best it did on radar is 105. Cant read the speedo at 100.
@@mikeevanoski1108 yup. Same As all the guys saying their sleds did 120 across a lake. And their sleds were xc700 or zr800 or xlt600 lol.. only Sleds that go that fast are well Tuned and clutched thundercats/xcr800/a bunch of the newer 4 stroke sleds. Again the ice needs to be perfect and temp and sled has to have perfect clutching etc and a light rider. Maybe those sleds above can hit that. Most of the time they struggled to get to that even. Now if we are talking modified then lots of sleds can hit that speed with tons of money.
Had a 98 mach z with a crank shop 1025....easy 200hp with set up for trail riding and occasional lake runs. Would pull away from thundercats and had a few of them so pissed that I wouldn't pop the cowl so they could look.... 😂
Lmfao. Down 300 cc but right there with an old 700. Sure the cat is faster then an SRX but we all know what’s still running these days and what was and still is more bad ass
Agree if you watch the last race it was damn close. My son on the tcat he always went for the hardpack snow lol. The last race the srx was on the hard pack.
So true, I had the 1998 tcat, every srx in town wanted to race me, my sled had some very mild work done, never needed to play with it tuning wise, 198hp, smacked everything that pulled up to me for 10 years.
Should both start on no trail clearly was a difference in hard to soft but the cat doesn't have much on srx until the distance see ya grasshopper yammyhopper well u get it
Yeah the last race when the srx got some traction it was holding its own very well to the Thundercat. Not bad for the shitty stock 1.00 lug track and 300 less CC. Just goes to show with a good track and some basic mods these sleds were screamers. Keeping up with the big dogs.
In my opinion the Mt max was a much better trail sled than Mt sled and better than the trail sleds of the time, with the 136 inch 2 inch track you had the traction that the triple 700 needs to accelerate, and with its relatively short track it handled great and was a rocket in straight lines, it did pretty well in the backcountry once you got used to the extra weight.
The SRX lost by a hair , NOT because of the engine but, because of the skid !. Always the weak spot for Yamaha. The pro action link sucked !.I have an F7 and an SX Viper with clutch can and triple pipes and it winds out a hell of a lot better than my F7 Fighter Pilot but, can't put the torque and ponies to the ground efficiently.
Crashed Xl500 Cat all Ohlins 4 years ago. Handle bars crushed several ribs and ruptured my colon. Had a colostomy bag for 6 months. Bought a ported Viper after they put me back together. Some douche stole it when I was at the beer store getting warmed up. I should just probably buy a 1000 Thundercat and get it over with. Thats supposed to be sarcasm btw. I still have the shocks. Also sarcasm. This is not an advertisement. Kinda.Mmmmm. Snowmobiles
Is there’s supposed to be a challenge here or something? Anyone who knows anything about late 90s early 2000s snowmobile’s knows the Arctic cat Thundercat 1000 is the king of snowmobiles
The 1998 Yamaha srx 700 was a slug it couldn't beat a twin 600 by far the worst snowmobile I've ever owned the rear suspension is ancient the sled totally sucks
They come with ngk 10 plugs they fowl out continusly change to 9s problem solved told others I saw several on the trails hoods up I ordered waited excited bout the new 1998 SRX claiming 140 hp it was a slug went out bought a new MACH Z 800 loved it sold the Yamaha
