Queen Elizabeth I(1533-1603) played a pivotal role in transforming England from a remote island in Europe to a major global power in the 16th century.
She was so committed to making her country a powerful empire that she said, "I married to England."
And such a patriotic queen reportedly left a famous quote, "Even if a time comes to surrender all of the nation, we couldn't give up Shakespeare."
William Shakespeare(1564-1616) is the creator of Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, King Liar, Macbeth, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and others, which are being made into plays, movies, operas, and musicals today.
He left 38 plays, two long poems, each as long as a play, and 154 sonnets.
Professor Choi Chong-chul spent 30 years to complete translating all the mentioned Shakespeare's works into Korean in the form of verses.
He says it was all thanks to King Sejong the Great, the creator of Hangul, the Korean alphabet, that he was able to recreate the literary beauty of the original pieces into Korean.
Why did it take so long for Shakespeare's works, primarily play scripts and poems full of poetic rhymes, to be fully translated into Korean verses?
We hear the historical reasons and the essence of Shakespeare's works from Professor Choi, a Shakespeare scholar.

16세기 유럽 변방의 작은 섬나라였던 영국을 대영제국으로 변모시킨 영국의 여왕 엘리자베스 1세(1533년-1603년).
그녀는 “나는 국가와 결혼했다”고 선언할 정도로 영국을 강력한 제국으로 성장시키기 위해 매진했다.
그런 그녀가 “국가를 모두 넘겨주는 때에도 셰익스피어 한 명만은 못 넘긴다.”는 말을 남겼다.
햄릿, 로미오와 쥴리엣, 리어왕, 맥베스, 한여름 밤의 꿈 등 지금도 연극, 영화, 오페라, 뮤지컬 등으로 만들어지는 작품들의 원작자인 윌리엄 셰익스피어(1564년-1616년).
그가 남긴 작품들은 희곡 38편, 희곡 작품 1편에 해당하는 길이의 장시 2편, 소네트 154편이다.
이 셰익스피어의 전 작품들을 장장 30년에 걸쳐서 한글 운문으로 완역한 최종철 교수.
그는 표음문자인 한글을 창제한 세종대왕 덕분에 셰익스피어 원작의 묘미를 살릴 수 있었다고 밝힌다.
그런데, 셰익스피어의 작품들은 모두 시적 운율로 가득한 연극 대본과 시들인데, 왜 이제야 운문으로 번역된 것일까?
