While watching this I texted my friend that’s picking up his plane from a heavy annual and reminded him to fly it around the pattern for a full 30 minutes before heading out over the Everglades. He thanked me for that. Let’s have each others backs.

Josh has come a very long long way. I can remember watching one of his first videos when he was a student pilot and probably in his late teens (mid 2000sish). He was very astute doing his preflight back then. Keep up the good work Josh. I look forward to seeing what he does in the future.

There are several types of flight instructors. Time builder just in it to build hours and don’t really like teaching. Experience builders who end goal is to get to the airlines but like teaching. Finally the career instructors who wouldn’t want to do anything else. Avoid time builders.

Exactly. After a bad experience with a time builder I contacted a very reputable school and requested their most experienced instructor. I got paired with a great CFII/ATP who normally teaches commercial multi & advanced students. Although I'm willing to pay more for quality instruction nobosy has to accept a sub par CFI. we're the customer and it might be good judgment to say NO!

Flying is serious fun. I’ve had a ton of good times while flying and some great adventures, loads of fun. However, I take all my flying and teaching, as a CFII, very seriously. As a pilot, my personal standards are high. As a teacher, I’m not just teaching skill, I’m teaching single pilot resource management and decision making. It’s about communication and knowing the student’s needs and assessing and perfecting their skills in a safe and fun environment. Moving the stunt from rote to understanding. As the saying goes flying is intolerant of neglect, complacency and incompetence. Fly safe.

Best advice I got from my AOPA mentor was your paying the instructor, he/she works for you. I have fired 2 instructors during my flying career.

Well done, guys. You hit all the key points and laid out how it's a shared responsibility to help the student become a knowledgeable and capable pilot. It's more than going through a few instructions and training then turning them loose. I liked when Josh suggested in the early stages of training (and probably periodic reminders as well) for the CFI to be sure the Student Pilot has a right to feel uncomfortable about something. And they can let the Instructor know. It needs to be two way communications. I watched your video on the incident, Josh as I've been following you since before the "Prom" flight. That's a long time. And, I cannot understand how the CFI ever had students to train. Your call to "check your ego" is valid. Thanks for this one on one session. Very important thoughts.

My CFII is doing it because he actually loves to teach IFR - moreso than teaching Private or Multi- just because it opens up the pilot's world to flying on 'less-than-perfect' weather days. Flight instruction is NOT his primary job. He has no aspirations of flying for the airlines. He loves shooting instrument approaches in actual IMC conditions - and the 'Voila!' of popping out of the clouds with the runway directly ahead of you, right where it is supposed to be. That ability builds confidence -- Not only confidence in your instrument flying skills, but also confidence in your airplane, and the student realizing that you CAN do it safely.

Aviation careers have moved too fast, and we take unnecessary risks when we hurry. Josh is right about professionalism having nothing to do with money. Professionalism is a disciplined attitude acknowledging perfection is unattainable; it must still be relentlessly pursued. Pilots may make allowances, but aviators never stop learning and aren't satisfied with twenty feet off altitude or a foot on either side of the centerline. Those who love aviation will do better than those simply looking for a job.

@takingoff @aviation101 medical professionals have the “Hippocratic Oath” of ethics. It would be cool to see you guys come up with something similar for CFI’s and it would be great if the FAA got behind it by saying all CFI’s should sign the oath, just to give it further backing without adding new regulations.

Elements of the oath could be to always keep safety first and that students are encouraged to express safety concerns and constructive feedback for their instructors. Kind of like a 10 commandments for CFI’s. Does this exist already? If it were 3-5 bullets that every instructor/student discussed like a checklist before a flight it could help set the tone for professional ethical behaviors

If your CFI isn't doing these things find a new CFI. I've flown with six CFIs at four 'schools'. My current CFII is also an ATP and the first thing he said to me was 'if you see anything you don't like or are concerned about speak up and if you don't agree or think I'm wrong call me out or challenge me'. That was during our first ground then he said something similar before our first flight. The school also uses a flight risk assessment before every flight. If we go out and do a dual then I plan to go solo immediately after I still have to go in and do another flight risk and dispatch process. The other schools and CFIs were total chaos and unprofessional compared to my current school.

I love what Josh is saying but think he too shouldn't be afraid to be assertive in the message. Students and instructors MUST work together as a team with a clear common goal. This has to be not just for the flight lesson but the whole program for the student. The goal isn't to bring ego, or apathy into instruction nor is it to churn the student through the school as quickly as possible. The assymetry in the relationship also works against success because communication becomes filtered or withheld or misunderstood. If the student and instructor create a proper clear and open dialogue then any questions around safety aren't held back but rather welcomed. Common goal: get the student the right instruction at the right time in the right format for how they learn and encourage questions.
