Had Bach had the chance to keep his good relation with the Margrave of Brandenburg-Schwedt, we would probably have had many more of his incredible concertos, innovating combinations of less usual instruments. Bruce Haynes worked magnificently at reconstructing a full set of 6 “new” concertos, (gathering excerpts from cantatas). Here we bring a 13th one, hoping for good luck...
We based our work on 3 sources: cantatas 169 and 49, and the E-major harpsichord concerto (BWV 1053)
The diversity of colors is one of Bach’s concerns, having a virtuoso like Georg Pisendel at hand, he could have considered our combination.
As tricky and fragile as love itself, the early viola d’amore was mainly strung with the very same metal strings (steel or brass) as a harpsichord, for half of the bowed ones. The preferred top string was of gut, the 2 lower strings of silver-covered gut. The tunings for that instrument back then in Germany were numerous (16 different ones are proposed by Joseph Maier in 1732 but there were more...). The resonance strings act like the right pedal of a piano. The vibration of a note, puts a resonance string at the corresponding frequency into vibration, echoing like a beautiful magic acoustic.

Therefore, d’Amore carries strong symbols: Communication, Relation, Harmony, Agreement, Sympathy. Because “Love is blind”, the head of the instrument shows a blinded innocent face.
Harpsichords and d’amore have metal strings in common, but using a bow allows a totally different expressiveness.
Bach called for viola d’amore for very special moods and affects.
We hope this instrumentation will bring out the emotional content of this marvelous piece.
