After owning both KTM 390 and 200 Duke bikes (and 690 for good measure) I have some thoughts about these bikes pros and cons, handling, problems and reliability issues which might be interesting for people who are interested in these motorcycles. Here is my detailed long term owners review of KTM 390 Duke and 200 Duke.

A little info about me. My name is Andrei Bodrov, originally I'm from Moscow, Russia, and now I live in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Back in Moscow I was a motorcycle instructor and creator of Moto Control Beginner & Advanced motorcycle rider courses, which quickly became the most popular courses in Moscow (well, at least the advanced one😁). My advanced training course makes emphasis on slow speed riding techniques at first (such as good clutch and throttle control, proper riding posture, proper use of vision, etc.), then proceeds to more advanced techniques (such as aggressive braking, trail braking, maximal lean angle). The course incorporates a lot of exercises from DOSAF slow speed riding (similar to police rodeo like motorcycle training in USA), braking and cornering exercises and motogymkhana style riding. And now, since I actively learn English - I decided to post some useful videos for both your and mine practice!😉

Ive been riding my KTM390 for 10 years now. I love it. Downsized from riding heavier 600cc bikes. I agree with everything you say about them. Been watching your videos to get help with riding mine at slow speeds

Hey Andrey! Great video and I fully agree, I just sold my GT650(didn't find any particular place in my heart, nice bike, but nothing special) and "downgraded" to my all time favorite, a Bandit 400. For similar reasons, light, nimble, very easy to use, good fuel economy, does everything well. and all the nay sayers, after 5 minutes spin around the block join the quest to get their own 400 bandit lookalike. Anyway keep the awesome work, best wishes from Slovenia.

Andrei, what a fantastic video. Small bikes are more true motorcycles than behemoths for experienced riders and to hear this from a guy who knows what he's talking about and a motorcycle tutor is definitely the need of the hour. Truly, this video was supposed to have come by 2012 when the Duke 200 was launched. You should review bikes as a side hustle, putting them though proper paces.. Saludos!

My friend bought duke 390 first gen version used few days ago. He has to change the instrument console which is damaged due to exposure to sunlight which is a common issue. And it heats up due to indian conditions which is manageable. Other than that he is enjoying the bike. This machine is just raw power🔥. Breaks are awesome. Best under 400cc single cylinder motorcycle hands down. 🧡

I have had three of these bikes, the 1st gen, which oddly enough came equipped with Continentals and semi metallic brake pads more than a decade ago, the NG and the 250 NG, which largely disappointed me with its 25 extra kgs, sluggish acceleration and those Rev-Z criminally incompetent tires 😂. The 1st gen was a blast for me, I traveled through back roads a lot at that time, enjoying my time riding, eating at places on the side of the road, making fun of my friends riding 600’s constantly runing out of fuel, all the while running minimal risk from the contained back road speeds. Not one spill on that bike either. I’m really tempted to buy another one of those just for shits and giggles. I almost forgot, that 1st gen bike developed a head gasket oil like at 1500 km which pissed me up quite a bit but isn’t that serious tbh.

Awesome video as always Andrei! Quality getting better and better. About tires, I still don't understand why brands here insist on using MRF or Eurogrip. I get that they lower costs but considering how insane prices are already I'm not sure asking people to change new tires is good. And in many cases it's necessary. It's particularly bad for beginners as it prevents them from training safely and with confidence. On the upside, if they can keep the bike from sliding with this they can become masters of grip.

Loved this video! I moved to australia 2 months ago from italy . I had a 600cc hornet 00' for almost 5 months , then i came here in AU.. that bike was too "extreme" for me and no ABS! Now i want to buy ktm 200 , very cheap here too .. i dont know if i will fit , im 1.62 mt and 60kg (very small 😂)

KTM has all bikes (I think) with high seat heights. Not good for vertically challenged riders, specially new ones. Anyway, usually, for the same class, KTM seems to be much more expensive, although generally they have better parts. I’m taking the A level motorcycle drivers license (which will allow me to drive any bike, since I am already an old guy), but I decided to buy already a 125cc bike since my car drivers license allows me to drive 125cc with less than 15hp. I ride it almost every day doing a lot of training and the evolution pace is quite impressive! I had to chose a Suzuki GSX-S 125 (with ABS, which is mandatory in my country) because it had the lower seat high where I can (almost) flat foot. When more experienced, I can wide my choices by just putting one foot on the ground and/or tipping toe. It’s kind of a mystery, to me, why this channel doesn’t have much more subscribers. To me, this channel is full of fantastic quality content where I learnt and continue to learn a lot! Thank you for that.

The duke 200 is the fastest one in it's class. I never owned one but have ridden a friend's one. For 400CC bikes the fastest would go to the Honda Super4 (assuming you managed to buy one now).

Just finished video. This is probably THE best motorcycle review on RU-vid! I’m going to guess it took at least 3 to 4 weeks to plan, shoot, and produce this quality for a 22 min video. I’m not sure viewers understand what is involved with this amount of quality, entertainment, and knowledge. But at least for me, it is not lost. Bravo 👏

Great video. Can you please tell me where you got your frame cage and handle bar sliders from. I am experienced rider and we have got the KTM like yours to teach the kids to ride, they will most likely drop it while learning.

I had a RC390, and had plenty of fun riding it. My two dislikes were how hot it ran (as you say), and the silly fuel guage, which would from two bars below full to a bar above reserve in the space of ten miles. I was never comfortable doing more than 80 miles before refuelling.

Hello, great video. I am also owner duke 200 and like it so much, it has some huge pros for beginners. One question did you change the stock mirrors or its stock? I luck of visibility and looking for better mirrors, 'cause stock can't give good filed of view.

One more thing why I like duke its because it demands from you to develop yourself because of short gear and power on high revs you forced to change gears a lot, jerkiness on low rpm pushes you to work more with grey zone, rear brake and good throttle discipline, and still because it is light it forgive you a lot of mistakes, so this bikes actually a good teacher for beginners.

Hi! I don't think there is a particular beginner engine size cap. IMO it's more important that the bike has a physical size (not engine size, but actual size, like height and width) appropriate for the rider, and as little weight as possible. And low cost, so the rider could practice riding without being terrified with high repair cost in case he tips over. Small cc bikes just tend to have all those aspects. It's not that the bike MUST have a small engine. If a particular beginner rider has young Swarzeneggers physique and his old self wallet - he can start on 1250gs no problem😁

Thanks Andrei for the awesome content. I am 6'5" - 215lbs; so, the KTM 200 or 390 maybe too low/small for me. I am looking for a second bike for practicing and short/around town rides. I have 2022 BMW 900XR and don't want to beat it up doing slow speed maneuvering exercises. What do you think about the (taller) Svartpilen 401? Since it has the same chassis as the 390, can it be as good in terms of handling and maneuverability? Other second bike options I am considering are the BMW 310 or Honda CB500. I personally would look at ktm390 adv or bmw310gs in this case. Or even better, since you already have a good commuting bike, I would consider a motard, like DRZ400sm or something of that nature, they are perfect for practicing stuff 🙂

I have Husqvarna Svartpilen 401. It’s same with duke 390. At 3000 km, piston was damaged. It’s been 4 months waiting for replacement.

The front suspension is not great, not terrible.... Anyway I have been riding a small motorcycle (150cc) for close to 5 years. I think the fuel savings and convenience can't be beat. I am qualified to ride all the way to 600cc and more but still prefer smaller bikes for daily commute (lane splitting).

The z400 is an awesome bike, if you are the right size. I learned to ride in one of those. Sadly, after riding bigger sized bikes (not in CC but actual size and seat height) it feels tiny and cramped. I'm basically the same height and weight as Andrei and the knee angle wasn't very comfortable, especially for learning, where a more neutral position is recommended. The mt03 is more or less the same. Tiny bikes for tiny people. It can become intense on longer trips.

Are 390 adv and duke essentially the same? Some locals here dismiss the 390 adv quite harshly! I started looking at CRF 300L lately. Good first bike?

Engine is the same, the rest is not:) I personally like adv very much, it's not a "true" dual sport (I tried only the version on 17 alloy wheels), it's more of a normal road bike with some little off road flavor. CRF 300l is more dirt-oriented than 390adv. So it depends on how much dirt you want, really😁

I'd say the adv version is actually their flagship version now, even for pavement roads. It's much more adjustable and keeps most of the Duke's tech while adding more stuff. Only downside is maybe some extra weight but that won't really affect you I guess. Regarding the CRF, I've owned an older 250L and it's awesome as a dual sport bike. And as far as I know the CRF 300L is basically a much improved version of the 250.

@@MotoControlEn I joined a local kTm facebook group and the comments about their reliability are concerning to say the least. The Duke 390 is almost 3,000$ cheaper than ADV variant. It's the cheapest in its category, too, cheaper than cb300R by a significant amnt... hmmm

@@tofuman9526 I can't really speak for KTMs reliability, all I know is that I personally had no significant problems with them so far, but I might be just lucky😄Adventure, I guess, is more expensive due to better suspension and stuff like traction control. And marketing😏

​@@MotoControlEnAfter watching you ride dukes all the time in your videos, the fun you have on it made me book the 250 duke. And then came speed 400 with exact same price over here. Now its confusing to select between the two due to multiple reviewers claiming speed 400 to be a better choice even over 390 duke (gen 2). It would be really great if you could shed some light and more importantly if I'll be missing out on the fun factor if I go with triumph speed 400.

I can't really tell anything about triumph speed 400, since there are none here in Argentina, so you're on your own here😁 Just looking at the specs, though, triumph is 15kilos heavier. Plus, from my experience, the most fun bike is usually the one you don't mind dropping from time to time. And again, I don't know the situation in your country, but here duke parts are cheap and easy to find in case you break something, plus there is a lot of protection stuff being sold for them, like cages, sliders, lever protection or foldable levers (it's for 1st and 2nd gen dukes btw, don't know about the newest ones). That's also what you may want to consider.

@@MotoControlEn both are marketed by bajaj (the dominar brand). Both bikes cheap to maintain. Triumph looks premium than duke any any angle. Its jus the fun factor that im confused about. The test rides are just 3 or 4 kms max to knw any better. Have to really on reviewers. 🙂

I don't love the thumper engine in the KTM 390 and, at 6'-3" and 210 lbs, it's just too cramped. I picked the Honda CB500X instead, which is less cramped (not perfect), has Honda reliability, and a buttery smooth engine.

I was at my local motorcycle shop and they had a ktm duke 790 and 890 and they had a cbr650r and a cbr600rr and a aprilla tuono and rs660 and r7 and cb650r and gxsr 600 out of those which is the best for a beginner

Government has made mandatory for manufacturers in India to provide ABS or UBS for two-wheelers with 125+cc engines. So duke 200 in India gets dual-channel ABS. Rear ABS can be turned off.

Cool, ABS is a good feature for a street bike. The only thing that pisses me off that it resets itself every time you switch ignition off. My 390 had a "supermoto" mode, which switched off the rear, or it could switch ABS completely, I believe the new 200 is the same?

@@MotoControlEn I am not experienced enough to switch off ABS🤓, not yet. However, I have heard others complaining about the same. I even heard that traction control switches on in Duke 390 adv when you switch off and restart the bike. May be KTM did it intentionally.

That's the way to go, for safety. Here in Argentina they started doing that for bikes above 250cc I think, and there are also some requirements below that too. Sadly that is delaying the release of new models here so they can keep the old ones and avoid making that investment. Also prices are like 2.5x what they are elsewhere so that would push prices even higher.

@@lucascarracedo7421 fortunately in India, the government regulations is resulting only slight price rise. For example, government made it mandatory to have onboard diagnostics and flex fuel compliant. That resulted in only marginal price hike. This is true at least for 125-400 cc bikes. I hope situation improves/changes in your country too.

One of small bikes advantages is actually how small and light they are. You can easily put them in and out, regardless of how little free space you have in your garage. And if you don't have any garage, they are less likely to be stolen. And you won't lose that much if they still will be.
