This channel is about all things trikes and ravel. I have been riding a recumbent trike since 2005 and have been touring since 2007 all over the world. I have toured on 6 continents, in over 20 countries and cycled more than 75,000 miles. In 2020, I shifted from solo trike touring to solo RV travel. Now, I am back on just my trike touring 9,000 miles around the USA..
On this channel I have gear reviews, tips and tutorials but, mostly, I produce short travelogue type videos of my tours as I go. I travel with a GoPro Hero 10, Insta360 One X2, Skydio 2 drone, Panasonic GH6 and an iphone. Thanks for subscribing and following along!

I had a Burley child trailer when my daughters were very young. Loved it. Towed them behind my road bike. Wish I still had as I’m sure it could be modified to carry camping equipment. We have 65lb Belgian Malinois that rides behind me and my trike in a Houndabout 2 trailer. Can carry 135lbs. I barely notice it when towing Molly. Soon to get a second dog (Golden Retriever) do that will be interesting. Looking forward to your trip.

Trailers are a very individual aspect of trike touring. On my first cross country trike tour in 2009, I pulled a Burley flatbed trailer with a Rubbermaid plastic trunk strapped atop. I was pulling a lot of extra weight between the trailer and trunk, just so that I could load them up with even more weight, to the tune of fifty more pounds, and all this was in addition to my Arkel GT-54 panniers and Arkel Tailrider rear rack trunk. My total rolling weight was roughly 375 pounds, which really slowed me to a crawl going over mountain passes because I am a human powered triker. Backing up or turning around in a narrow area was very challenging also. At the end of that three week adventure, I promptly sold my Burley trailer to a triker gal who wanted it for local shopping ... she was happy to get a deal, and I was happy to be trailer-free! A couple years later, I toured with a fellow who pulled a Burley Nomad behind his Catrike Road. It was a great trailer, and he loved it. I thought it was a very well designed trailer too. The next time I toured with him, he was also trailer-free, so apparently at some point during the year, he decided to get rid of it and just travel with panniers only. I figured that if backpackers can hike the Pacific Crest and Appalachian Trails with just a single backpack, then I should be able to discover a way to carry what I needed on the trike, especially considering that my pannier rack could hold far more volume than a backpacker's single backpack. I like puzzles, so I set to work on solving it, and was successful. As with all of us trikers, we try this and that until we ultimately land on what works best for us, all very unique solutions to the very common question of what to bring and how to pack it! Since you are battery powered, you have a much wider leeway with what you can bring without wearing yourself out totally on long trips. All your batteries and the motor add considerable weight, along with the trailer, and as long as the motor does not give up the ghost on your trip, you'll be fine. If it did, pedaling all that weight with human power would be a nightmare. Taking this USA tour with this new setup will be a perfect proving ground because you'll have quick access to assistance and mail. I look at it this way: We all try different strategies at different times, which in practical reality, is the only way to really learn what works for us. I've spent tons of money on this trike addiction over the years, much of it on solutions that did not pass muster with me in the long run, but hey, I am wiser for it all, and have finally landed on a solution that checks all my boxes. Ahh, if only I had all that money I spent figuring all this out ... I could buy even more goodies for my trike (and add more weight, ugh). 😆 steve
@TravelsByTrike
@TravelsByTrike Год назад
Yes, the only reason I'm using a trailer is the extra weight of the e-assist batteries will put me over the weight limit for my rear rack. The trike I'll be riding is 11 years old and, even though I'm not exceeding the limit by much, I don't want to stress the rack. I'll also be camping and trailers are great for camping. This burley nomad trailer weights 15 lbs. My panniers and rear rack bag weigh 10 lbs - so it's not a huge difference.

@@TravelsByTrike That trike buddy of mine who used the Burley Nomad that one year must have had the long extension that connected to the rear axle like you were showing because his trailer rode VERY low to the ground on the leading edge, and he sometimes would scrape it on the ground. I think that short arm that you are using is valuable, and will avoid this happening. steve

Looks like your rig is coming together nicely. I’ve had the same trike as you for six years in the FS 26 size. Love it! At the end you mentioned your flags and my approach was to keep adding visual alerts until people would stop saying I was going to get run over😮To the three flags you have right now I would add a twirling Fusilli flag onto the tip of the trailer flag. On the back of the trailer add a universal bright orange triangular sign signifying a slow moving vehicle. Drivers coming from behind are wondering what you are. Let them know you’re slower than a car and the twirling flag will give them some sense of your speed. Just a suggestion for you that works well for me. Best of luck arranging the rest of your gear. Thx Sylvia for the preliminary presentation of the Burley Nomad Trailer. I have a FS Ziflex Mono Wheel Trailer, attached to my ICE Sprint FS trike by a 2 armed fork, with each arm hooking snugly on each side of the rear wheel axel. It has a carrying capacity of 35 Kg. The reasons I choose a Mono Wheel trailer for long distance touring are: 1) I already had it on my Koga bicycle, when I shifted to the Trike in 20022, (I have 2 two wheeled Trailers too, both using the same hooking system as your Burley Nomad, and found out that the fork attachment works better, is more stable, with less stress on the rear wheel axel), 2) one wheel has less friction than 2 wheels and actually follows the trikes rear wheel track, which is an advantage in grassy or gravel/sandy paths, 3) Less wind resistance, Looking forward to your experiences with the Burley Nomad on the road. 🙏

Hi I use my bike trailer a lot for doing my garden jobs collecting garden items 25 or 30kg peat sometimes I do two trips but when cycling you know the weight is behind you. The best thing is to have good gears on your bicycle and to get using all of the types low for the hills and the middle gears on the flat roads. Have you ever put a 30kg bag and then do a road test to see how the bike uses the gears in hilly plus down and flat. Sometimes the weight can slow you up hill this is whare you use your bike gears you find the power of your bike gears work plus good slow release on the brakes to controll your cycling. When loading the trailer, keep it slightly front heavy and keep the heavy items in the bottom of the trailer. Re the shorter tow bar: It doesn't have a kick up bend as it is made for 16-20" wheeled bikes. The longer one is for 26-29" wheeled bikes. When ordering the trailer you should have said it's for a 20" wheeled bike and they would have supplied the shorter tow bar instead. Edit The shorter tow bar is for the 'Burley Solo' child trailer. How wide are the trailer wheels compared to the front wheels of the trike? It would be nice if the space between wheels was the same so your track was only three wheels instead of five. That would make it easier to dodge debris in the road. I was amazed crossing the country with how much shredded truck tire pieces there were on the shoulder. Your trip will be wonderful, and having those batteries will make all the difference.

The Burley trailer is within the width of the front wheels of the trike. I own just like Sylvia a HPV Scorpion with Burley trailer. So there is no problem with bollards. If the front wheels go through the bollards gap, so will the trailer without hitting the bollards.

Great information. Looking back on my first attempt at long distance striking/camping, I wish I had used e-assist. I was carrying 55 pounds of camping gear, and going up a 6-mile long grade of 4% was brutal. At 2.6 mph, it took 3+ hrs. including rest stops. I'm not ever going to attempt something like that again without e-assist. Too much wasted time along with physical strain on the leg muscles. I carry two batteries now. Here are a few questions if you don't mind. How do you like the Rolloff rear end? Better than a derailleur? Is the Burley suspended? Is it quiet? I am using a WIKE trailer kit and it's very rattly on anything less than smooth pavement. Ideally like like to rig up a solar panel onto my trailer to charge the battery not in use with sunlight. I actually got it to work, but I need a more powerful panel to make it practical. Anyway, I'm getting wordy. Looking forward to your trip. With any luck I'll be cruising with you one day. I still remember when I saw you riding here on the Olympic Mountain Trail in Washing State about 3 years ago. Take care my friend. Keep us up to date.

Instead of a 4th battery I would put a 100-120 Watt flexible solar panel ($150)on top with MPPT ($30). Although I am not sure that will work with Shimano batteries? (A reason why I prefer a Bafang or Tongsheng with much cheaper 'softpack' batteries) A single panel may not give the same extra range as a battery, but it could help you if you really camp wild. You can even put two panels on top of each other and take a long lunch break. With two 106x53cm panels constantly in the bright sun you can do 50 miles a day. But that would require some construction on your trailer. One thing of solar charging that is not not unimportant! FUN!!! Your trike and trailer will become more a machine. People will love it for a conversation. Solar is COOL. But hey, you may find a sponsor along the way? See if you can visit a solar shop somewhere. The best panels are those with Sunpower cells. Give them a call. Super easy to install. Panel-wire-MPPT-wire-battery. That's all. I do see people these days carrying a powerstation. Not sure if that would be useful? Like when you can solar charge a Shimano battery directly, but you can with a powerstation? For me it is too much weight. I don't need anything else than USB ports. So that is my tip for today. Solar yeah. 100-150 Watt will already help. And maybe the underside is a moonpanel? I have't tried that yet.
@TravelsByTrike

@@TravelsByTrike And no one 100 Watt panel is not enough to always have a full battery. But it will give you more range. Above all you can travel as a solar powered trike to attract viewers! Things really get interesting at 300-400 Watt. In the Sun Trip a French guy did 300 km a day just on solar in Spain on a homebuilt (tandem size) trike. But you don't need that. 100-150 watt is fine for the 'cool' factor and the extra push riding through Death Valley.

As for the new Nomad trailer, the floor is kind of weak. I have a video of how I fixed that. Plus, get some Clear Flex Steel spray and hose down the sides and bottom, to water proof the whole thing. I also have the Luggage rack, which is a good idea, I moved my flag to the back, and added tail lights and side running lights. Take care and ride safe. P.S. @@TravelsByTrike I got the idea from this guy : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XEuWHA0LgHc.html But I cut the wood I used into two parts, so I could use the divider. I used Peg board in front and thin plywood in the back, its what I had on hand. I will make a quick video next week after the arctic blast moves out. The neat thing is, in the front part of the trailer, where is kind of drops down. When you install that wood "Floor" you now have a small trunk space for storing small things. "Its a very neat idea. Hope it helps.

Maybe a thin wooden floor (1/8-3/16-inch-thick actual aircraft plywood at large craft stores), a luggage rack that can hold a lawn chair and also serve as a table with a thin surface. When camping, both table and lawn chair always there, if not available at a busy camp site. Corrugated plastic, like a yard sign, available at large hardware stores just like larger "model airplane plywood" sheets. As a craftsman, I would make an original "swing over" luggage rack that when used as a table is not actually over the trailer. Attached to, but next to the trailer. Perfect for cooking, coffee/hot chocolate making, eating, typing, drone readying, etc.

@@garyseckel295 For the back part of the trailer floor, behind the divider, I used pegboard, reinforced with 1x2's. for the front part, in front of the divider, I had a pieces of 14 inch thick plywood I cut to fit. Painted both. Taped the edge's so the wood would not chaff the nylon and it is working just fine. I don't think thinner play wood would hold up to the type's of loads I carry.

@@garyseckel295 I found a piece of white board to use as a floor in the trailer. I've ordered the cargo rack Burley makes only because there isn't a way to strap anything to the top of the trailer.

Too bad you couldn't get your trailer setup with a solar panel to charge your batteries as you pedal along. Ed Miller did a couple of his Trike Canopys with solar panels for his customers that charged their equipment. I think Ed has given up on Tricking since loosing a very good friend to an idiot motorist. I miss Ed's RU-vid with his side kick Paul. Be safe out there and enjoy your rides and the beautiful lands.

The Nomad is not really big enough to support enough solar panels to do the job. Plus if your using 12 volt panels you'd need a times 4 step up charge controller to charge your 48 Volt batteries. I have the Nomad and I also have a two wheeled E recumbent. So its just not practical.

@@longrider42 You can use a 100 Watt 18 volt panel and cheap MPPT and it will charge a 10Ah battery just fine in a day. May not seem much. But it will get you up that hill the next morning. You can see it as an emergency charger just in case.

For my upcoming tour, electricity should be readily available. I think the solar platform, wires, controller and adapter add unnecessary complexity. I would need to learn a lot about how the wiring works. Solar is cool and fun but maybe not so practical?

@@TravelsByTrike It weighs less than a battery. Do me a favor. Visit someone or ship and have them show you how to connect an MPPT. So simple. I feel naked without solar. I love watching the amps go in while I eat my sandwich. The longer I stop, the faster I can go. Isn't it amazing? Power from the Sun. Starpower. Actually they are star panels!
