Welcome back everyone
Join me on my ride to the dealership to have my new 2022 BMW K1600GT SE serviced at 700 miles.
During the ride I give a few things that I like and dislike now I am getting used to the change from my BMW R1250 GS Adventure.
I also give a few pointers on the Connected App, which has been the pain of my life on the GS and it's implementation on the new 10.25 inch TFT
Thanks for watching
Nick
Below are various links to kit I use or items referenced in this video.
These are amazon.co.uk (United Kingdom) links and clicking through and purchasing does earn me a small commission and costs you nothing extra.
I'd be really grateful if you are buying any of these if you used the links and help support the channel.
Thank you
Nick

Great video Nick, honest reviews are the best, people who buy a bike and immediately say they love it or its the best ever etc. are not being honest. You have to live with it for a while and get to know its good and bad points, and only time and miles will tell.

A most interesting review. I frequently use the A34 to reach the south coast from south Warwickshire and was actively considering buying a K1600 to use for this journey in place of my do-it-all Honda NC750X. However, your comment regarding spending more time in traffic because the K1600 is too wide to filter was a deal-breaker for me as the A34 is notorious for huge traffic jams. A real shame too as I do like the K1600.

I was so excited, back in 18, when I got my first K1600 Grand America and was hoping this K will stay with me for many years from one to the other, but after reaching 12k on it, I had noting but nightmare and was sad for me. I was so disappointed. I was at the dealer more then riding . It turned me off totally and I sold her. BMW finished me. I loved the bike and the power, the shift assist, the sound, the ride. And, I love the new style GT in black. I own 2020 Goldwing DCT Tour and I can't see myself going back to BMW. Your video is fantastic and you are correct on everything. A bike I've always fancied. Thanks for the review and tips. So we have to do 600-700 running-in miles, no biggee. And if you don't, well go find the channel that blew up their new M1000RR without running it in first- guess what BMW told them to go and do when they went "warranty claim?" ;-) . And yes, I do know about Ari Henning's running-in experiment. Lordy knows the 1600 has the most ludicrous procedure for checking the engine oil level, but no excuse for the 1st service cost.

Nice video Nick of a road I know so well! Like you I prefer to ride with my toes on the foot pegs rather than “flat footed”. Just one other comment and one that I’m sure you appreciate but didn’t expand on, the running in process is so much more than about the engine/gear box, it does give the brakes, tyres etc that necessary bedding and scrubbing in time. I know the BMW model that I ride always gets criticised for a weak rear brake but with some miles on it now, it’s really good. Being old school, it’s the one I use first and foremost.
@nickhodgeUK

Hi Nick, I enjoy your vids and am looking forward to your touring vids. I have a 09 K1300 GT and my mate has 13 K1600 GT. The 1600 has a far nicer riding position than my 1300. Performance wise they are quite close however the 1600 is far smoother and much more comfortable. I'm am going to swapping out to a GSA 1250 simply because of the amount of gravel/dirt roads here in Aus. I'm looking at a retirement trip around Europe/UK in a few years so I love any of the touring content. Cheers.

@@nickhodgeUK The bars are adjustable on the 1300. I have them up and back . It's the foot pegs that I find are the problem. Certainly a more sporty position than the 1600. The older I get the less comfortable it becomes ! Perhaps a little ironically the GS\GSA are lighter and more comfortable than my 1300. And the big tank is very useful in a country like Aus.

Hi Nick, great first service report. It’s nice to have your sensible perspective on this bike. As you know, I’m split between 3 bikes. Your reviews of this bike has got me confused further as to what to lay my cash on in November. I mentioned I loved my K1200S, which was the grandad to the K1600 series. I can’t wait to test ride one in September, and there are so many useful things going on with the new RT and KGT. As you know, I’d talked myself back round to a GS Adventure. However, that’s due an update, panniers are extra and there are a lot of creature/convenience features missing off the GSA. Yet, I started to fantasise about doing some gravel/poorly surfaced tracks in Wales, Scotland and the Lake and Peak Districts. The only answer which I can’t do now I remarried is to have a collection of bikes. Maybe I just have to be an arse to the wife V2.0 so I can get a GSA and a K1600GT! Only thing is, why do I need to think about pillion comfort, unless I aim for wife V3.0? Have a safe trip down to France, and I’m going to be really interested in your pillion’s opinions on your choice of motorcycle. Please ask for a comparison of the GSA and GT from the pillion perspective. Also, get up to London and filter around Piccadilly and the West End! Thanks for another great video.

On my 21 GSA I've done more than 9,000 miles and my success rate with the connected app must be above 98%. I have got a Samsung Galaxy phone.... so not sure if they have got issues with iPhones or your bike had a dodgy software. I nearly had some issues when the helmet headset won't connect but that is rare. I hope that BMW will ditch their limited app and will bring on Apple CarPlay and Android Auto into the bikes but I guess is unlikely knowing how greedy they are.

Very enjoyable video, have just subscribed. I’m currently a GSA owner, bought new in 2018 with 36k trouble-free miles. My rear brake was poor also, with continual bleeding not really helping. Once the dealers had removed & cleaned it, it was transformed… Thinking of a K1600 in the future, possibly the bagger LE. Apart from the additional weight, my slight concerns would be the fuel consumption (I’m a bimbler, and get 60-65mpg from the GSA!), and increased Tyre wear. Mind you, that engine… Thanks for sharing your experiences, looking forward to future videos. Cheers, Paul

Always measure your smiles with the miles and the $$$ you spent. K 1600 is a Superb bike with two Design Faults. 1.) No Active Cruise (I personally don't care if it did have it) 2.) Phone holder that is a disaster to work with. Designers in Berlin excelled with the RT's phone holder with the wireless charging and the Active Cruise. And, failed miserably on the K 1600 which is the flagship cruiser of the brand. As someone who owned GS, GSA, K 1600 and the RT, if you never do off roading, the RT is the shining star of the Touring bikes. If you do on and off roading GS and GSA are unbeatable. In my opinion and for my riding style, K 1600 was way too heavy especially with the full tank of gas. Cheers!

Nick, I don't get that problem as you describe, with the bikes radio. I'm on the 2021 RT and it does hold onto radio stations well and self adjusts as you build up distance. Hi Alberto. In my opinion the radio is VERY poor. I’m not so concerned about the external volume as I think it’s a little rude to go through a village with your radio blasting and both me and pillion have headsets to listen. My issue is there are seldom any stations on DAB to listen to. The auto tuning is very poor and there is no manual way. Hi Nick, just wondered if you contemplated a GW bagger with a top box? I have a GW bagger with a colour coded Shad top box. My wife has lost a bit of interest hence doesn’t go on the back much. Maybe one trip a year if I’m lucky. I love the wing but was thinking of something a bit more sporty although the GW is surprisingly capable for it size. I test rode the KGT the weekend still not sure if a swap would be the right thing. I just love the sound of the engine. I’m not convinced in real world the KGT is much quicker than my GW DCT in sport mode. It could be the GT. I just thought I would ask. It could be after nearly 3 years I feel like a change but don’t want to regret it. Cheers Matt
@nickhodgeUK
@nickhodgeUK 4 месяца назад
Hi Matt. Never contemplated wing. I have a mate who had one for some time and it was pretty sporty. His only real issue was ground clearance (he had footboard adaptation as he has leg damage). The K16GT (my model) is sporty and handles very well for a big bike. I’ve done 13,000 miles in her now and I still love it. You could consider the K16GTL as a halfway house although for me it was too spongy. I have the BMW colour-coded topbox which is wicked at £1,200 but it has an interior light, but more important it connects (as the panniers) to the central locking. Again the GTL comes WITH the topbox. Can’t help with your comparison but I can recommend the K16. The only downside if the slow weight but you’ll be used to that with the wing. Good luck in deliberations 👍🏻

Hi Nick. Great initial review and congrats on your nice new bike. I'm glad that you happened to mention the less-than-perfect radio reception. I ride a MY2021 R1250RT and I have the very same problem with the new antenna design. Radio reception outside urban areas is now really poor, at least when compared to my previous two R1200RTs which came with the butt-ugly rod antennas. If you don't want to dedicate one of the four favorite buttons for muting, how about fast-muting your media by scrolling the wonder-wheel's volume control to zero. That's what I do on my RT (the volume control is otherwise useless b/c it is incompatible with my Cardo/Arai combo). Some reviewers and commenters have expressed concerns for having to fumble for the four favorite buttons or taking your eyes off the road while using the menu. Well, I happen to be a former Finnish Air Force pilot and before were were allowed to start flying any aircraft, we had to pass the so-called 'bag test'. This entailed donning a flight helmet bag and being able to correctly operate every single switch in the cockpit - radio frequency changes included - without seeing them. Not difficult, per se, but it took a lot of practice. It is not hard to operate the buttons or complete the most often needed menu functions (zooming in and out on map displays, searching for new radio stations, checking out the vehicle status, etc.) without looking at the buttons or the TFT. I strongly urge all RT and K owners to make a second nature out of that. Good luck with your new beautiful K1600GT and have a wonderful trip to France. I am already looking forward to your comparo btw the K1600GT and the R1250RT.

I never worry too much about criticism on riding. People who criticise are also doing the same things. I wouldn’t for example be rushing to press any button in heavy fast traffic. Also eventually muscle-memory sets in and you can do it without even looking. 👍🏻

Hi Nick, enjoyed your running in video, and I'm pleased you have more positives than negatives with your new bike, I currently own a 9 month old 1250 GSA, my third one, I have dropped my GSA's at least twice attempting to shuffle backwards up hill on loose terrain loosing my footing then going over, then cursing myself for not walking the bike rearwards, so a reverse gear sounds heaven. The only saving grace with the GSA, as you know it's relatively easy to pick back up as it doesn't go over all the way with that Boxer engine. If I was to change for another bike it would be the K 1600 that I would go for, my only reservation I have being a very fit 65 year old, could I manage it weight wise, or should I go lighter. I look forward to further details on that silky smooth K 1600. thank you.

Stephen - I traded in my 2012 K1600GT had turned 52000 and purchased the identical bike to Nick back in June - absolutely well worth the change. You just do not feel the weight on this bike. I also removed the saddle bags on my new bike ( 50Lbs) and put on a tail bag which is expandable, I keep tools whatever in there, glass cleaner, Motorcycle wash spray, spare gloves, thermos and when I take my top jacket off and prefer to wear my mesh jacket, it easily tucks into the tail bag once expanded - slick setup. I do not travel with the side cases I prefer to use a roll-bag. SO simple - two rox-straps to easily undo and off I go. Then I can easily remove any crud off brakes, detail the bike as I daily do even on trips and i'm golden - back in the saddle strap down the roll-bag and carry on. When I traded in my 2012 it had the top box color keyed and the saddle bags and all three were brand new - hilarious - but the bike is so easy to maneuver - go ahead trade up i don't think you will regret it.

Siôn. We got on great two up. Consider this though. The GW is renowned for passenger comfort but not to dynamic to ride. I don’t use it much as the phone goes in the cubby and charges/runs the TFT mapping but I have a second phone on tour for when we take pictures as often these are just quick stops. Also sometimes we just need to get urgent fuel so plumb that into Google maps and mount phone there 👍🏻

Hi Len. Go on eBay and type in BMW R1250RT phone mount and a metal looking stub from china will come up. Buy a pair as they’re so cheap. May be a wait but they simply bolt on the end of the forged handlebars. Enjoy the K16 👍🏻

If the grand America has forged handlebars like the GT then just go on eBay and look for K1600 or R125RT phone mount and lots of the stub suppliers will pop up 👍🏻

Question for you on your comment about "knowing you are htiting a bump" - I have a 2018 K1600B. I notice when I hit bumps (hard bumps/holes in the road) there is a "klunk" sound from the front end. I'm thinking its the telelever suspension. Do you have prior experience with this type of suspension (I do not, previoulsy had an S1000XR)? I've only got about 4K miles on my bike so I wouldnt think it would be defective...yet. I have not brought it in for service yet this season so I have not had BMW diagnose. Thanks for sharing your ride!

Possibly they’ll stick with the 6.5 but then you will also need to stick with the Nav and pay licences to Garmin (Nav 6) and TomTom (connected app). I think they’ll make more of the connected cradle on the GS for serious adventurers using maps.me or similar while switching to the ability at least to use the connected app in map view and to do that successfully IMO you’d need more screen space…. Hey Nick! How did you give back the R1250GSA to the dealership? What are the conditions of the return program, how much did they value it for and how much was it when it was new? I think i paid £18,000 for the GSA in September 2020 and got £13,750 for it 2 years and 13,000 miles later so I guess about £180pm but servicing and stuff on top. Great job.. RT owner here, but I'm tempted by the smooth 6 and those brilliant switchable air vents. Hands off, do you find it drifting at all? Not recommended, I know, but most K16 I've tried seem to pull ever so slightly.. maybe exacerbated on the top box models
@nickhodgeUK
@nickhodgeUK 2 года назад
Hi Stan. Interesting that’s the 2nd comment on this. It may do a little to the left but no more than the GSA I’d say. Certainly it’s not stark. I had pillion on and removed glove no issue and replaced it later which takes a little longer. For sure any imbalance in load will exacerbate and I know the GA is limited in speed for the reason of the overhang of the top box and stuff to I think 110mph but frankly at that constant speed you’d not be able to afford the fuel as like most machines ‘mapped’ to Euro 4/5 compliance they are at their best

@Nick Hodge while sat nav etc is a feature of modern day life, the riding of motorcycles is far safer if eyes are on the road and not distracted by phone or other devises. @@philclark1098 I don’t disagree that all is a distraction even a speedometer is. It’s not specific to motorcycles though. Nope you probably didn’t miss it. I wanted the slightly better handling of the GT. the GTL is a bit more spongy. Probably a smoother ride on the GTL but not, in my opinion as sporty. That said I have the top box (not the GTL wrap-around one) but the same one as the RT so it’s pretty close. Certainly a passenger would be a bit more comfortable on the GTL but the 1,500 mile I did with my wife in France received no complaints. “Pays you money and takes your choice” as they say 👍🏻
