Various random videos but lately around my return to motorcycling after a 36 year absence about a new BMW R1250GS (2018-2020) and also a BMW R1250 GS Adventure (2020-2022) and now my K1600GT SE (2022-Date). It'll be some trips and tours, accessory fitting and general biking tomfoolery
Make sense, and thank you for the explanation. However, in my case, I ride more than one bike, and in this case I need to pair my helmet to my phone...
Hello Nick! Loved the video! I tried to use that very auxiliary socket for an air mattress pump and had the same results. Do you by chance know which fuse is blown so I can replace that I would really appreciate it if you know the answer. Cheers!
Well. That’s where you’re lucky. It’s a ‘software’ fuse not a physical one so should reset with an ignition off/on cycle. If it doesn’t you have another issue and the dealer will need to look at it. Just plug a cheap DIN/USB charger and see if that lights up when engine running and phone charging for example 👍🏻
A most interesting review. I frequently use the A34 to reach the south coast from south Warwickshire and was actively considering buying a K1600 to use for this journey in place of my do-it-all Honda NC750X. However, your comment regarding spending more time in traffic because the K1600 is too wide to filter was a deal-breaker for me as the A34 is notorious for huge traffic jams. A real shame too as I do like the K1600.
@@nickhodgeUK That southbound stretch from Sutton Scotney to Winnal can be sole-destroying fi you're in a car...as can be the increasingly busy M3/M27 junction...and don't start me on the A31 through the New Forest..
Hi Nick, do you know how to see your route from an iPhone 15 to the navigator 6 while riding? I did it once and the route was showing on the navigator from my cell but I can’t get it to replicate, I have set up everything like you mention
I’m sorry but I don’t know what you mean. You mean show the connected app on the Nav6. That’s not possible. Routes plotted either on the connected app (Tom-Tom maps) or the Nav 6 (Garmin (HERE)) maps are similar but may have a few route differences too. If you can try and explain what you mean I’ll try and help
Not mirror the iPhone on the navigator 6 I am saying while setting a destination on the iPhone maps, the destination and guidance was showing on the navigator, I am not sure how I did it but it used to work
Yep. I didn’t 6,500 miles up to the top of Norway and back the long way. Had two Rhinowalk 8Ltr dry bags from Amazon . One on each rail. Worked really well. Just unclip and walk away. Here amzn.to/4dRTJ2T
@@nickhodgeUK Thanks Nick, just had a look on the link and that’s exactly what I’m looking for. It’s good to have first hand feedback on these things. You should do a video on this.. I looked everywhere and couldn’t find what I was looking for. Pete.
Hi Pete. I would think so but email Wunderlich to be safe as you don’t want to restrict handlebar movement. If you’re in the UK, Nippy Norman will do it for you 👍🏻
Ghettaux accessory. Panel lines don't properly follow the frame - looks like they were cut out by a third grader with scissors. Wunderlich should do better.
I like the fact it covers a big ugly hole that BMW should do better with 🤣. Like it even more as I could drill it to put an accessory DIN socket connected directly to the battery to override the feeble output to the others from the Canbus 👍🏻
Hi Nick, I just wondered if you have considered changing the wind screen? I get a bit of buffeting and wind on my shoulders. I’m 6’2 / 6’3. Would you go for the Wunderlich or Klock Werks? Also did you contemplate Michelin Road 6 tyres? How many miles do you do before changing the tyres? I have just bought a 2023 GT which was own by a BMW director with 5k miles I love it. Cheers Matt
A have a bigger screen but have never used it so tough to know. I find the factory one fine on long motorway days and when ‘pushing on’ on smaller roads like to lower it to half way as I find it distracting when looking for best route into corners. I’ve not used other tyres as the Roadtec 03s I have are fine for me and they’re a special ‘HWM’ variant for the weight of the K1600 with additional wall ply. I changed them for a 6,500mile ride at 4,500miles and they lasted another 1,500 mile trip so I’d say 8,000 miles. Still love the smoothness of the engine and reverse for sure 👍🏻
Thanks for the reply Nick, I’ll have a think about the screen upgrade, I will probably stick with the Road Tec which i have about 2k miles left. Ride safe. Cheers 👍🏻
Just had to give my thoughts… originally connected with your RU-vid after purchasing my 2019 GSA. It was a great bike but, I felt it might be time to get a more traditional tourer, as that’s where the vast majority of my riding was… on the road. Again, learning from your similarly timed purchase of the K1600, I bought mine in 2023. It’s been almost 2 years of riding this wonderful bike but, I’ve realized my heart remains with the GSA… it doesn’t even matter if I never take it off-road. For me it’s the “tourer” I love. I’ve ridden the new 1300 GS, but I don’t think the new Adventure is going to be my bike, even with the front and back radar. It’s the 1250 GSA I like the ride and handling of. The debate now is if I get a new 2024 Adventure while they’re still available or, try to find a comp for my former fully kitted out 2019 GSA TripleBlack… keeping the dream alive… Alaska to Patagonia… I may never make the full 30,000 km but, I’m not yet ready to give up the dream. I’ll check back on occasion to see where your future interests take you.
I’ll always have a love for my 1250GSA and I’m waiting to see the 1300GSA properly before I make my mind up. First impression was awful but it’s already grown on me particularly if you BMW accessorise it as it is obviously meant to be. I’m also awaiting the 1300RT. On my 10,000km trip last year in the K16 my mate had a 1250RT. It’s lighter, does better fuel consumption, used no oil, so apart from the smooth engine in the K16 it’s certainly a very capable bike. Lastly, do your dreams. Life is very short 👍🏻
Hi Nick just found this. How are you getting on with the connectivity on your K1600. I'm trying to connect my Packtalk Slim to my TFT whilst having my Garmin Zumo also connected but it doesn't want to pair? Any suggestions?
The 1600 (and 1250) are a treat in comparison. Connects fine more than 90% of the time and not known it drop on a call. The mapview on the TFT makes such a difference. Surprised they’ve not fitted it on the new 1300 GSs 👍🏻
Indeed, so long as the lithium battery is charged. I also have no need to carry a gauge as the airman compressor has an accurate integral gauge in tyre pressure range calibrated with a garage unit. Each to their own I guess??
Hi Nick not seen a video for a bit so i hope you are ok. Quick question about your K1600. I have just bought a very low mileage 2022 option 719 which i love to bits. However it tends to 'drink' oil to the tune of 300 mm per 500 miles. I did a test for BMW who said this was within tolerence. Have you had any such issues with your K1600. Best wishes Peter
Hi Peter. I’m all good thanks. Yep the tolerance for the consumption on the K16 is very high. It seems to be a bit better with continuous use. For example on my 10,000km (6,500 mile) trip to the top of Norway last year, I topped up with a litre total. My mates R1250RT used none. However after a shortish (1,000 mile) trip around France and a few short rides (maybe 5/750 miles in total), it needed 500ml too. It was also newer then. It also has a weird way of checking it too so beware that as last time in topping up I overfilled as it was not as low as I thought. It is in the manual how to do it. Good luck 👍🏻
Great video, cheers! Can you tell me a little more about the tools you’re using to fill the “void,” and how you’re securing them in there? What a brilliant idea! Have you by chance got links to them? Ta.
I have a small Wera Tools pouch with relevant torx bits and a handle. I use the 3M Dual Lock (don’t buy cheap knockoffs). Wipe inside of pannier with medical alcohol or similar to degreaser and apply two 1” sq patches. Then see the other half to the tool pouch and it’ll work fine. Try tools around bike yhat you think you’ll need to remove panels, wheels, etc. you can’t take everything (take duck tape and cable ties for the rest 🤣 ) 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK Also, any chance you remember where you got the black reflective stickers for the back of your paniers? Such a great idea! Incognito, except in dusk/dark conditions when everyone has their headlights on. Safety first after all.
@daveracer6885 I think he may have gone now. It was someone on eBay from the Isle of Man called GSStickerMan. He also had a web site I think. Try looking him up
3 years later and we still have the same problem. My Cardo Packtalk Edge, iPhone 15 and the TFT on my BMW F900XR connect but we lose voice commands on the Cardo and media payback. So for now I only connect the phone to the Cardo and all the Cardo features work fine. The only things I miss on the TFT is the speed limit right next to my current speed on the TFT and the voice recorder on the Cardo app
It’s the standard handlebar mount with an extension arm and vibration damper. I think the thing you need to know is there is also a stub extension from eBay that bolts in the end of the handlebar. These normally come in a pair and can be searched as BMW RT1200/1250 Handlebar mount or similar (same for the K16). I don’t use it much as the phone goes in the cubby and charges/runs the TFT mapping but I have a second phone on tour for when we take pictures as often these are just quick stops. Also sometimes we just need to get urgent fuel so plumb that into Google maps and mount phone there 👍🏻
Love it. However, I feel like it is an overly complicated to solution for having emergency air or air for any reason. I have a LiPo air compressor from Amazon. It is very small, very light. Probably halve the size of your pump. It can also serve as USB charger. It works beautifully, especially for motorcycle tires. Best of all worlds. Plus? Only cost me $60 or so for one of the better quality Amazon units. You can get em much cheaper.
But does it overload the incredibly low amperage DIN sockets and still inflate from flat in reasonable time? This was the dilemma faced and this a perfect solution for me. Also the gauge on the airman has proven pretty accurate which I like too. Each to their own though (or you’d all be married to my wife 🤣) 👍🏻
Hi Nick, I recently had the epiphany of using AI / ChatGPT to assist me in planning tour routes. It worked incredibly well, especially in locals I wasn’t well versed in the local terrain and options available i.e. avoiding Interstate Highways while crossing the U.S., establish daily ride times, finding suitable accommodation, highlighting local POIs i.e. world’s biggest ball of earwax… or was that ball of string, etc. Any way, it takes seconds to plot though, it provides an apology for not being in an exportable format but, advises they’re working on it. If you haven’t already tried it, give it a go.
I used copper grease as it’s more about stopping corrosion than lubricating. Realistically any will do as it won’t get hot either. Just be sure you just smear lightly on the spindle only 👍🏻
Well I no longer have the GS but it’s a brilliant bike. I preferred my GS Adventure but that was personal. I love the R18 but definitely a second bike for bimbling locally on sunny days 👍🏻
i know its a few years ago, the files are not there, is there any chance of sending me them or re uploading them. It looked fantastic ride, would love to do it.
Hi Nick, just wondered if you contemplated a GW bagger with a top box? I have a GW bagger with a colour coded Shad top box. My wife has lost a bit of interest hence doesn’t go on the back much. Maybe one trip a year if I’m lucky. I love the wing but was thinking of something a bit more sporty although the GW is surprisingly capable for it size. I test rode the KGT the weekend still not sure if a swap would be the right thing. I just love the sound of the engine. I’m not convinced in real world the KGT is much quicker than my GW DCT in sport mode. It could be the GT. I just thought I would ask. It could be after nearly 3 years I feel like a change but don’t want to regret it. Cheers Matt
Hi Matt. Never contemplated wing. I have a mate who had one for some time and it was pretty sporty. His only real issue was ground clearance (he had footboard adaptation as he has leg damage). The K16GT (my model) is sporty and handles very well for a big bike. I’ve done 13,000 miles in her now and I still love it. You could consider the K16GTL as a halfway house although for me it was too spongy. I have the BMW colour-coded topbox which is wicked at £1,200 but it has an interior light, but more important it connects (as the panniers) to the central locking. Again the GTL comes WITH the topbox. Can’t help with your comparison but I can recommend the K16. The only downside if the slow weight but you’ll be used to that with the wing. Good luck in deliberations 👍🏻
Hi from Minnesota… I traded in my 1250RT for a KGT and have never looked back! Hope your year with yours has been a good one! I’ll never go back to an RT!
Hi Craig. I have relatives from Minnesota. My aunt (now deceased) lived in White Bear Lake and I regularly visit cousins in Lino Lakes and Cottage Grove. I also ran the UK office of Northern Tool and Equipment so was often in Burnsville. Small world. I’ve done over 13,000 miles on her now and she’s still beautiful 👍🏻
Hi Colin. Yes. Close all apps on phone. Open Spotify (my app choice). Start a track turn volume up full, pause Spotify. Open connected app (start route if you are running one). Turn on helmet. Turn on bike (that boots TFT and SatNav) if fitted. 👍🏻
My bike came with one of these. I removed it, the bike already stands too tall and I was afraid it will tip over and with this extra piece it made it stand even taller. The side stand should be made a bit shorter so the bike can lean more to the side and be less at risk of tipping over.
That’s interesting. Do you have a GT or GTL?? I wonder if you suspension is lower than mine. I’d say it is just about perfect with the extender on and most of all gives a larger pressure point when pulled up on less than a solid surface 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK It is a GT I just bought. I rode an LT for a long time. Also a GSA and an older RT. All of these bikes lean more that this GT. And they are all lighter than the GT (Except the LT). The way this bike sits, I am worried it is going to tip to the other side since it sits so upright. Have you had any issues ?
Nice tutorial. But I use myself the Givi bags, a little one (XS319 - 3 liter ) and the XS308 (+20 litres). In the most extreme steering-wheel displacement, you'll find the bar against the biggest bag. But that will not often be the case. Givi will not mention that these bags will officially fit the K1600, but they certainly do.
Thanks Nick still sounds like areal pain in the arse. Just want to jump in the bike. Looking at a Chigee, shame BMW don’t use Apple car play on that beautiful 10.5 inch screen
Interestingly Steve I now disagree. CarPlay with gloves, etc is not ideal and once you do what I outlined it does work throughout a day. Maybe it’s become routine for me but over the trip I did (4 day, 1,000 mile) recently it behaved impeccably. Connecting to map view and media all good. Phone not dropping maps, etc. it’s a million miles better than back in 2018 for sure. Now don’t get me started on the radio though…! 🤣👍🏻
Quick BTW. If you wear an Apple Watch, lock it as if you’re going swimming as I found it was turning volume down. Opening the camera and all sorts with my cuff tightly retained in a jacket and glove
Hi Nick just got a 1250 RT 2022 and have a IPhone 12. Had a few wireless connection issues, have to remove case and make sure it’s it a certain position int the phone slot. When I play media can’t seem to hear anything although shows the song playing on TFT. It also chooses Apple Music rather than my Spotify account. Any advice?
The cubby in the RT is VERY small and fiddly. My mate has to remove the case from his phone too. I think you’ll have to do what we both do. I have the K1600 with the same TFT. Close all apps on you phone. Open Spotify and start a track playing manually. Turn volume up full on your phone while the track is playing and press pause before people start staring!!! Then open the connected app and let it connect and go to ‘map view’. Then carefully drop the phone into the cubby without turning it off or opening the connected app ‘curtain’ then you hopefully will be fine 👍🏻
Hi Nick, I'm Nicola from Bari (Italy), I bought a K1600 gt last week. Beautiful motorbike, I left a 2022 R1250 Rt for the K. I noticed a notable difference in the sound of the radio, from the Rt to 120 km/h it could be heard very well with the helmet closed and I could hear almost nothing on the K. It turns out that it's different the type of sound between the 2 models? Thank you.
Don’t confuse WiFi with internet. The WiFi is just a wireless network available so you can download stuff onto the app wirelessly. I prefer to do it by cable or take the card out as the WiFi transfer is slow. So no, you need no subscription. GPS is used so you have a position stamp on the footage. Also good if you use it in videos as there is software to show maps with the GPS data 👍🏻
