✩ FAQ
▹Why is there no fighting?
This is a performance of a taiji sword form in modern wushu. This is meant to be a form and not actual combat, although the movements all derive from real techniques. All Asian martial arts had a heavy emphasis on forms training, and it was the equivalent of shadowboxing or padwork in boxing. Traditionally, forms were really used to train and demonstrate techniques, and you would practice the form and actual fighting.
For wushu's adaption to sport, there is a forms division (taolu), and a fighting division (sanda). Today there's no need to fight, so many people learn the basic applications, but focus only on taolu. Wushu taolu take a style's martial techniques and builds them into aesthetically pleasing routines that epitomize the ideals of a style's philosophy. These forms showcase techniques at the highest level, but are stylized and composed for performance in a sport setting. They are meant to be entertaining and pleasing to watch, just like a high-level gymnastics or ice skating routines. Wushu taolu is judged on proper technique, power, agility, technical difficulty, and martial intent.
If you're interested in actual Chinese martial arts in combat, take a look at Sanda (Chinese kickboxing): • Video
▹Why is her sword floppy?
Since this is adapted for sport and health, you want to change the weapons to be safer for practice and competition as a sport. Not only that, Taiji is regularly practiced by over a billion people, the last thing you need is these practitioners showing up to parks and gyms with real swords or anything close to it. Note, although these are made to be purposely floppy at the ends, they are counterbalanced at the hilt to be as closer to the balance weight as traditional Chinese swords.
If you this seems to odd to you, think about some other sports that came from combat, such as fencing, archery, and javelin throwing . These sports use heavily modified weapons that are safer for sport practice as well. In fact, fencing swords doesn't even look like swords anymore, and are even more flexible than wushu swords.

I fence recreationally Fencing swords will break your rib if you do not wear protective gear They look very close to the swords they are modelled after ( Epee and rapier) and are also of basically the same stiffness Historically the rapier was made of spring steel They are simply blunt but unlike the aluminium sword shown here they retain weight and characteristics of the original I think this is a silly comparison as fencing is based on actual combat while wushu is clearly a performance art and it is enjoyable to watch But there is no need to deride fencing Also the sword is clearly adapted to be lighter rather than just safer which is what makes many of these moves possible/ easier.

@seraphinaaizen6278
@seraphinaaizen6278 3 года назад
@Hoy Sum Eh.... Taichi doesn't really have any basis in combat. And the footwork and movements a person uses for this kind of thing is something they'd honestly have to discard if they were going to fight in reality. Any moderately experienced competitive fencer would absolutely defeat someone who only practiced taichi. Just like anyone who's studied boxing for more than a few months is probably going to knock the living piss out of someone who's only practiced Wing Chun their entire lives. Traditional martial arts, generally speaking, are functionally useless when it comes to fighting. They're essentially a performance art, and I think it's better to look at them that way.

Wushu: taolu and sanda Karate: kata and kumite Silat: seni and tanding Most olympic martial arts have such system. The acrobatics branch is coreographed, but both branches trained the same basics. what do you mean olympic martial arts? None of these are at the olympics as far as I know. Karate will debut in 2020 so thats still out there. In fact if you look at olympic martial arts only TKD has anything thats kata like. I agree you shouldnt look down on anyone who can perform these coreagraphies. But its sad that competent martial arts get their meaning lost because of the emphasis on art rather than martial. But thats more of a problem with the masters.

This is poetry. It's the definition of discipline. The lady is completely aware of, centered in and confident of her body: its position, its power, its balance, its movements. Compared to her, the rest of us seem to be occupying our meat suits for the moment, by simple happenstance. It was a pleasure to watch her.

Omg this gave me goosebumps... So smooth and then suddenly, bam! sharp. Not a movement too much to waste energy, just enough. Grace and danger, beautiful and deadly. I'm in love.

Beautiful performance...the human body really can reach great lengths. It reminds me of Ponsaes, Taekwondo forms. I was always more excited to watch their performances than the fights themselves - and practice them. It's often underestimated because people often seeks action... But there's beauty in each movement.

The acrobatic elements are impressive, but this lady has such control over the sword. At all time she knows where the point is and where the cutting edge is. Such great connection with the weapon.

This is well done. Suijin has steady concentration, strength and balance. Regarding the negative comments it seems some folks don't understand that Tai Chi is moving meditation, not an aggressive form of self defense. People looking for fighting style martial arts should search on Kung Fu or Karate, etc.

Strange connection for me in this video, reminds me of Dune.This is exactly how I would imagine the Bene Gesserit would train their fighting skills and eventually perform it as a full fighting technique. The great muscle control and graceful movements really painted a picture for me as to how a Reverend Mother would skillfully move their position while also attacking. Wonderful performance btw.

I agree. Very graceful and beautiful form and I am sure A LOT of time and work went into mastering that routine. However as Quig said.......train with a real weapon because the weight is much different and it would take much more effort to do that anywhere near as fast or crisp with a real one. Again kudos for what WAS done and very well done it was.
