*Finally* Animals as Leaders is getting some love from reactors! They are insanely talented jazz/rock fusion artists that is truly mindblowing. It might be worth checking out their music videos or live videos if they have them. To watch their technique is a transcendent experience.

Animals is a relatively popular band in that djent/instrumental style. I do believe the bass sound is the second guitarists, as they are a trio with two guitar players. Awesome reaction!

Thank you so much for checking the video out! After reading up, they definitely stick to the trio format when playing in a live setting, but there are bass tracks present in the studio recordings. According to the bands Wikipedia page, Tosin Abasi played bass on the studio recordings from 2008 - 2012, and Javier Reyes has played the bass on the studio tracks from 2015 - present.

Amazing song, right? Hell, an amazing band! The guy who created the band is Tosin Abasi. Absolutely incredible. And has studied music for years. From the sounds of a it, a similar start to Dream Theater. Once he learned all the theory and stuff, he built his own sound. He plays an 8-string just like Javier (other guitarist and friend of Tosin). Both of them are on another level. Their back and forths in many songs, blow me away. They play the guitar like an acoustic sometimes and they'll also emulate bass if needed. Seeing them live when I barely knew who they were was amazing back in 2017. A friend told me he was going and I had no clue who they were. I said yes anyway and started listening to what was their latest album at the time, The Madness of Many. It sounded too complex for my liking but there were bits I liked, especially the Djent stuff. The show was eye opening. After that I met the band outside. Mostly spoke to Tosin who gave me advice on upgrading from a 6-string to an 8 or 7 first. Now being a huge fan I'd love to chat to him. He was so nice and humble. True inspiration in music.

Loved the reaction man, you’re gonna have a blast with AAL. I’ve been to a few of their concerts and some Tosin Abasi solo sessions, and all three are really pushing boundaries. Their heavier tracks I recommend are Kascade, CAFO, and backpfeifengesicht. Also, The Brain Dance is a beautiful track and blends a few genres outside of prog metal

You need to watch live versions of their songs. Most of the time, they'll have a repetitive section where the drummer Matt Garstka just goes off. "These drums sound so meaty" If I remember correctly, the drums on this album were programmed by the drummer. He did say he programmed the parts as he would play them but if you see him play these songs live, he adds so much to it.

Thank you so much for checking out the video! After reading up a little, in a live setting that is definitely the case (2 guitarists, one drummer), but according to the band's Wikipedia page Tosin Abasi played the bass on the studio albums from 2008 - 2012, and Javier Reyes played the bass on the studio albums from 2015 - present.

@@bloodblitzowns11 I just read a little further and there is a bass player credited on the track, but the album The Joy of Motion was recorded during a time when the band had no active bassist within the band assisting with studio compositions. The bassist credited on most of the tracks (all except 2, 6, & 9) is Misha Mansoor of Periphery; and the bassist credited on tracks 2, 6, & 9 is Adam "Nolly" Getgood of Periphery. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Joy_of_Motion#Personnel

Really enjoy the reactions man! And super stoked that you enjoyed Animals as Leaders. They have a lot of great stuff to offer. If you want to see a different side of them, from their first album I would recommend The Price of Everything And The Value Of Nothing, or Modern Meat. Modern Meat is a very different change of pace from Physical Education. I think it would give you a good reference to the scale of their range, musicianship, and their influences. Whatever you choose to check out by them, I hope you enjoy, and thanks for continuing to bring us reactions to the music we love, and introducing some of us to music we didn't know we loved. 👍

Awesome reaction it always makes me glad to see someone enjoy animals as leaders on the first listen. You should check out their song “the brain dance” it’s pretty different and you can really appreciate their range in musical genres and styles.
