The "maneater" in the song is the city according to John Oates. He was inspired by the image of woman he'd seen walk into a bar he was in. But it is ultimately about how the fast pace and hectic grind can chew you up and spit you out. Good catch by Brad.

There was a lot of things happening back in the 80s. A new and fresh Queen's phase, Phil Collins getting a new style, Robert Palmer making an incredible posh sound, Robert Plant going alone with amazing sweet sound, Peter Gabriel hitting some pop albums, The Police with a more popular style, the New Wave Breaking the house... And Hall & Oates making a new style, driving through a whole sea of a new magnificent musical decade. Hit after hit after hit, their sound reminds me neon lights. So Beautiful, so bright, versatile and charming. The guys are legends. Period.

This song was written to sound like it was about a woman but it was about NYC. John first wrote the music to sound more Reggae but Daryl thought of Motown for the beat. There is a mash up of this song and The Supremes' song: My World Is Empty Without You. You can definitely hear the comparison. You must do more of this duo because each song has a story behind it.

The thing about good 80's music is you remember the time, where you were, who you were with, your friends, your neighbourhood, which girlfriend you had at the time and what you did for fun. The memories are still very vivid all these decades later. The reason 80's music is so great for good (and bad) memories is because this was the era when the array of different types of music was so vast and the sounds were so diverse that you could never hope to keep up with it all. Because many songs were so unique it was VERY easy to peg a certain song that was popular at that exact time to what happened around you at the time and it would stick. Thus being able to recall a certain distant memorable event to a particular song of that day....and yes, I had a girlfriend at the time that was a man eater, she was beautiful and desired by almost every guy around her but she choose me (when it suited her). Her name was Ashwyn and I remember her fondly, she could never be tamed, she was a free spirit and you never knew where you really stood with her. Frustrated me at the time but all these years later I accepted who she was back then. When I hear this song my mind goes back to that period in time, her and the times we had.

Even rockers listened to these guys at the Christmas new years party's were fun friends family and community. That's all we had and the world was a different time and planet. We had to do most things for ourselves and a day was 7am to 8pm then the adult time 7 to 11pm. What a time it was

H&O capitalized on the Music video in the early 80s. When MTV started (when the M stood for Music) they had limited stock on various concert videos and promo videos artists used to make for the overseas market (since many groups couldn’t make it to Australia for touring, videos were made for down under) Music videos were frowned upon by many artists early on. In fact, MTV had to pay record labels to make videos in the beginning. Hall and Oates was one of the few artists that saw the video market was a way to get their music out there if it wasn’t immediately picked up by radio. It didn’t hurt that Daryl Hall could sing and was seen as a heart throb. It took a good three years for music videos to be seen as a must for when a group would put out a single. The the tables turned and MTV didn’t have to go begging for videos. Everyone was making them and everyone wanted their video on MTV.

John Oates - "Well, it was about New York City, after the fact. I got the idea for the song because there was a woman who was very - she was beautiful but had a very foul, you know, vocabulary. It was the juxtaposition of this great beauty with this foul mouth that really kind of sparked an idea to me that she would chew you up and spit you out. But neither Daryl nor I wanted to write a song that was anti-women or negative toward women. So, what we did was we transpose that initial idea and use New York City in the ’80s as a metaphor. New York City became the maneater, the city that would chew you up and spit you out. And that is really what the song is truly about."

I live for listening to you both describing what you're hearing. It's so fascinating because , as a musician/producer myself, you both describe things in such a non technical and innocent way that actually offers a certain childlike/fresh perspective that I may have never considered before. Like Brad saying "it's fast", and Lex saying "but it's also chill", which is brilliant because it is literally both of those things. My brain just thinks "ok, I'm hearing a swing beat over some bluesy/Moody chord structure". Lol Love it !!!!!
@gems3604
@gems3604 2 года назад
I love your comment. Thank you for explaining the technicality of the song. A swing beat over blues chords. I have always wondered how these musicians compose and arrange the music. It's blended so well, I don't know what I'm listening to other than in some generic way. For me the best part of these different reaction videos is learning from the people who make comments. It's amazing. Thank you so much for offering your insight. And yes, you're right there is something to be said for getting a totally fresh perspective on something you thought you knew.

Hall and Oats are a staple in the eighties. You got to check them out some more to get your kicks and your licks cause they be dropping them bars in between them sax solo. Next do I can't go for that 👍

This song popped in my head earlier today at work and I thought to myself “I wonder if Brad and Lex have reacted to that yet” Guess this answers that question. Lol

These two guys laid down some of the best tracks of the seventies and eighties. Try Sara Smiles next truly awesome song. Thanks Brad and Lex, Brother Gary

I was a Kid when I first heard this track. Mostly on my clock radio at night when I was using music to sleep ... except this song terrified the crap out of me. My child brain took the lyrics literally lol

Definitely need to check out Live From Daryl's House. Tons of famous artists performed there in like a small bar like setting. Modern artists like Cee Lo Green, to ZZ Top, to the O'Jays, and more. Maybe a different type of react stream you could put on the board.

It's what passed for pop dance music in the 80's. Great singers, great lyrics. That era will have no equal for that style of music. Still has power to hold your attention.

The importance of hall and Oates cannot be overstated. They were the most successful duo in history. Their brand of music was called Blue Eyed Philadelphia Soul. They had hits from the mid 1970s through the 80s and into the 90s.
