Others said it first, but you got it quickly. This was a huge hit when I was in high school. I was always baffled by people treating it as a love song. Totally a stalker song.

The song was penned as the government monitoring people 24/7. This used to be common knowledge but I think Sting is afraid his politics have finally become reality and it isn't so fun anymore.

This song has always creeped me out. I've only heardthe stalker story recently, but from the first time I heard it, it screamed "restraining order." Most people I know think it's a love song. That message, to me, is a pretty perverted idea of love. I never liked this song, never will.

@@Senjinone No, he's not. Youbknow what amazes me? This used to be common knowledge. I remember when the song came out. Once upon a time MTV did countdowns on "love ballads" and this song was not included because it was not about "love" at all. True story, look it up if you like.

It’s so cool that you immediately picked up on the stalker theme. At the time this was a hit and it was all over the radio, everyone was like, “what an amazing love song.“ Sting later pointed out in an interview that the song was in the voice of a possessive controller

Ya'll nailed this one! Most people heard this for the first time and thought it was a love song...they even played it at their weddings! But it's actually a creepy stalker song...his woman left him and he can't handle it, "Oh can't you see, you belong to me! Every breath you take, every move you make, every single day, every word you say...I'll be watching you!" Basically saying you'll never get rid of me.

Written by Sting. Produced by The Police + Hugh Padghem. 1983. Sting: lead vocal, bass, synthesizers. Andy Summers: guitar, piano. Stewart Copeland: drums. The Police: backing vocals. Godley + Creme: direction of the video. Andy graduated from CSU Northridge in 1972. Stewart is the only American. 🇺🇲 Sting + Andy are British. 🇬🇧 The Police were in The Bahamas. Sting + Stewart Copeland were constantly arguing + laying temper tantrums. The infighting was so bad that Andy Summers left the house to look for help. Luckily, the late George Martin, producer of The Beatles, was nearby. Andy talked to George. His advice was relayed to Andy. Then, Andy returned. Sting + Stew stopped their bickering for the meantime. Meanwhile, Spandau Ballet was working on their album True on another side of the island! 😃 SB was on the rise! 🤯 1 year later, Sting met Spandau Ballet at the Band Aid recording session, London, UK. 🇬🇧 Yet, The Police was slowly breaking up. 😖😖😖 Sting + Stew could not even agree on how to play Every Breath You Take. 😖 This was a song on the final full studio album. Information c/o Andy Summers: I was at his book signing! 😃 Do not think of EBYT as only a stalker song: think of it as a break up of The Police + wishing the band was like it was on their 1st album. Sample. Puff Daddy sampled this. He made his rap into a tribute of Biggie Smalls. Guest singer is Faith Evans, widow of Biggie. RIP Biggie, Sir George Martin. Suggested next Police video: Synchronicity 2. 🎸🥁👨‍🎤🎸🎹 🇬🇧🇺🇲

It’s a sweet sounding song that goes totally into creepy stalking when you pay attention to the lyrics. The Police were short-lived, but amazing. Almost all of their tracks were huge hits before they split up. Sting (the singer) went on to have a very successful solo career. You should definitely check out more from the Police. Don’t Stand So Close to Me is a one with a clear story. Every Little Thing She Does is Magic is a great one. And Roxanne is an absolute classic. I love hip hop, but the original here is way better than the P Diddy and Faith Evans remake in tribute to Biggie.

3 man band. Each of the three of these guys are among the top 10 on their instrument of all time. Each is a virtuoso. Andy Sommers toured as a solo one man act after they split where he would sample all the instruments and components to each song on the fly and build each song live. As you listen to some of their 2-4th albums, listen to the drummer Stu Copeland carefully. He's a human metronome and exceptionally creative with his riffs but always SUPER tight.

3:16 - COVER VERSION - P Diddy's hit “I'll Be Missing You” was written to honour friend and collaborator Notorious B.I.G after the rapper was fatally shot in March 1997. The song - a collaboration with Faith Evans debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on June 14, 1997, and stayed atop the chart for 11 weeks. The rapper shared in a tweet that he pays the mighty hefty sum of $5,000 a day to Sting for using a sample of The Police’s classic hit “Every Breath You Take.” For those doing the math that comes to an astounding total of $1.825 million per year. In an interview Sting was asked, “Is it true that Diddy had to pay you two grand a day because he didn’t have permission to sample ‘Every Breath You Take’?” Sting quickly replied with, “Yeah,” but also emphasized, “for the rest of his life.” The 12-time Grammy winner did go on to also confirm that Diddy did finally get clearance for the sample, though after the fact. BTW, the original is sung from the perspective of a creepy 'stalker' thinking about the object of his desire.

The Police, Synchronicity 1983, Every Breath You Take. The 1983 “Evil Empire" speech was a speech delivered by U.S. President Ronald Reagan to the National Association of Evangelicals on March 8, 1983 at the height of Cold War and Soviet-Afghan War. In that speech, Reagan referred to the Soviet Union as an "evil empire" and as "the focus of evil in the modern world". Reagan explicitly rejected the notion that the United States and the Soviet Union were equally responsible for the Cold War and the ongoing nuclear arms race between the two nations; rather, he asserted that the conflict was a battle between good and evil.

I worked in a music store when Puff Daddy's first big cd came out. His whole format was basically to steal hit rock songs from the 80's, tweak them a little, and then put it out as his own. It was really frustrating/disappointing to see so many kids come in and have absolutely zero clue that PDiddy just stole a bunch of songs and wasn't some genius. Also, most people don't realize that the lyrics aren't about a loving, helpful person watching out for someone else. It's basically a song about stalking someone.

The way I take it, which is not commonly accepted, is that she left him the wedding video, and he's watching it - every vow you break, every step you take every file you fake. She cheated and as he watches the video he is trying to figure out if she ever loved him, analyzing every little thing she did. He's stuck watching it over and over and can't move on Just my uneducated opinion

It’s hilarious how so many people think this is a love song - it’s really about a guy stalking an ex (she needs to call the police straight away!).

"Never heard of the Police"?! Wow. Biggest band in the world for several years running in the early 80's. I can only assume that Brad & Lex never owned a radio :)

Since Brad loves to dive into the lyrics, I recommend you react to their song "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da".🙂🤟

Can you believe that The Police and P. Diddy performed this song live together?
