Probably not the only one to say this, but Comfortably Numb from the same Pulse concert in '94 is considered one of the greatest live songs/ guitar solos of all time. I deeply regret not going to see it at Earls Court back then.
I agree! Comfortably Numb from this concert is a must see. It reaches right down, and takes your soul. The end guitar solo is something that takes me to another world I'm 64, and grew up on so many great bands.
The lead guitarist and singer you watched here is David Gilmour , he's touring right now with a new album. Luck and Strange. The song Sings is beautiful, its a very good album, Gilmour is 78
Link to David Gilmour with daughter Romany performing 'Betrween Two Points', recently released, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-A9qdvkx9E3o.html
This was in 1994. It was called the “Pulse” tour, and after this, they released their double CD of the tour. It was really cool. The case had a red LED in the end that would do a single blink. What was nuts is exactly after 1 year of putting in a battery, mine switches to a double blink, like a pulse. I still have it and have swapped out the battery properly 20 times since then. I also had this on LaserDisc, which was the best home video option before DVD’s. They were huge, but so so good. That show was incredible. Any Pink Floyd from the Darkside of the moon, wish you were here, the wall, or the division bell albums are amazing…every song.
I was 16 in 1969 when I bought my first Pink Floyd album (Ummagumma) and saw them live in 1971 and 4 more times after that. For me this is the BEST band of all times. Now I'm 71 years old and still listen to them everyday.
This song was written about the band's missing friend and former band-mate, Syd Barrett. Syd was the front man and principal songwriter for PF for their first three albums. But he suffered from mental illness (some say schizophrenia), which was made worse by his increasing use of LSD. He became erratic on stage, playing the wrong song, and sometimes just walking to the edge of the stage and standing there. The band were all close friends, so it was enormously painful to watch their friend's mind slowly disintegrate in front of them. As he deteriorated, the band quietly asked another good friend, David Gilmour, to sit in on their shows, and 'back Syd up' in case he 'went off'. Things continued to get worse, until one night, on the way to a gig, they just.......didn't swing by to pick Syd up. Gilmour became the band's de facto lead guitarist, and they went on to have global success. But Syd vanished from the face of the Earth, to the point where even his own mother didn't know if he was alive or dead. (He reappeared for one evening, years later, wandering in to a studio where the band was mixing a song down. He was in such a state that he wasn't immediately recognized by anyone. When bassist Roger Waters was told who he was, Roger wept at his friend's condition.) Having to watch their friend slowly "go away" before their eyes hammered the band emotionally, and themes of mental illness, loneliness, and emotional connections (or their lack) became thru-lines on many of their subsequent albums. And as you'll find, Pink Floyd doesn't write love songs; they write albums. By this point their album "The Dark Side Of The Moon" (with the famous prism cover you mentioned) had begun to achieve the massive worldwide success it would go on to earn, and WYWH was the band wishing Syd was still there to enjoy that success with them. This live version is from Floyd's legendary PULSE Concert. I had the pleasure of seeing this tour with 65,000 friends, and it was even better than it looks. The band are musical perfectionists, so the sound is impeccable, and the visuals are just stunning. It was one of the very first computerized light shows, and in 1994 nobody knew what a computer was, much less what they could do. For that reason, at the time, the concert was literally indescribable to anyone who wasn't there. I encourage you to dive deeper into this concert; every song is spectacular. "Sorrow", "High Hopes", "Money", "Run Like Hell" and so many more great performances. A personal favorite, "One Of These Days", gives a good idea what it was like to be in the audience at this show. But the one song you HAVE to react to is "Comfortably Numb"; it brought down the house. It's been called arguably one of the greatest concert performances ever recorded. PULSE was far and away the best concert I've ever been to, and I've seen my share. Hope you give it a listen.
Roger Waters wrote the lyric. Roger has maintained forever that the song is NOT about Syd, but rather a question of self reflection, "...would I rather have a walk on part in the war, or a lead role in a cage? Being one that wants to be engaged and pro-active, I would choose the walk on part in the war instead of being in the rear. I'm very 'hands on' in that regard." David, on the other hand said that he can't play the song without thinking of Syd. Rogers' tribute specifically to Syd Barrett was "Shine On You Crazy Diamond".
@@boosuedon …except it really does sound pretty much exactly like it was written about Syd. Roger is a divisive figure. Some people think the band stopped being Pink Floyd when he left; Roger certainly thinks so. Others think he’s an arrogant petulant child. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Syd Barrett is a victim of the side effects of drugs. It develops over years and changes the personality. Dr. Anna Lembke talks about it on RU-vid and writes about it in her book. Too much pleasurable stimuli overloads the shared pleasure/pain brain cortex and causes dopamine resistance. It is an evolutionarily developed, hormonal process. The entire Western world suffers from this and drifts into war because it becomes overly sensitive to minor annoyances. Lembke's book: "Dopamine Nation". Syd's fate is remarkable! If we do not abandon the hedonistic way of life, it will be eliminated by a world war.
Thank you for your reaction video. This could possibly be a pivotal moment in your life, or not. You will make that decision by diving into, or passing by more Pink Floyd. I'm 60 years old, and I have had the distinct privilege of getting hooked on Pink Floyd as an early teenager. You may not have heard anything from them, or you may have heard a little, but until today you have never "listened" to them. And now, you have. Pink Floyd is an experience, almost an out-of-body experience in a way. They're not just a band playing some songs, their music has lyrics with actual meaning, and like the true art that it is, each person consuming that art will interpret it in their own way and it will have an effect on them that is unique to them. It has brought me much pleasure, food for thought, and insight to interpret the experiences of my own life. I hope that this introduction experience has touched you both in a way that will cause you to have your own "Pink Floyd experience" in your lifetime. My own life is often defined in my head as 2 parts, BEFORE Pink Floyd, and everything AFTER Pink Floyd. Try listening uninterrupted to an entire album at a time, paying attention to every lyric while absorbing every tiny sound that they hide liberally throughout their music. You won't be sorry, I promise.
Welcome to the world of Pink Floyd. The Pulse concert is a fantastic way to get into their music. Many (and I agree) think that this concert's version of Comfortably Numb will blow you mind, but any track from it is simply fantastic.
Random Pink Floyd trivia: The name comes from two blues musicians, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. Syd Barrett originally named the band “The Tea Set” but another band with the same name was scheduled for the same gig one night so Syd renamed the band on the fly to “Pink Floyd” after those two names popped in his head.
Actually David Gilmour (the vocalist on this performance) just released an album with him and his daughter. This song was written in memory of Syd Barrett who was the founder of the group back in the sixties. Gilmour took over when Barrett could no longer perform because of mental health issues.
I was at this concert in 1994 at Earl's Court, consistently voted in the top 3 concert of all time, every song is amazing, this is the 1st song of the encore, followed by ' Comfortably Numb ' the solo from this is consistently voted as the best of all time, then the show finished with 'Run Like Hell ' the lightshow will blow you away, Pink Floyd invented the light show back in the 60s to enhance the experience, they also invented surround sound for the same reason, may I suggest 'Coming Back to Life ' ,' Take it Back ' ,'One of These Days 'from this concert and 'On the Turning Away ' from The Delicate Sound of Thunder concert, you won't be disappointed with any of these suggestions.
Did you exchange a walk-on part in the war For the lead role in a cage? One must listen to the entire album from start to finish. Don't have anything else do, and prepare for your mood to be changed.
The whole "Pulse" concert is incredible - "Keep Talking" is a personal favourite, but "Sorrow", or "Comfortably Numb" will put you on the never-ending Pink Floyd journey WARNING! - there is no going back....
This was recorded at Earls Court, London in 1994. David Gilmour and Nick Mason still tour as does Roger Waters (estranged from the band since the 1980s). Comfortably Numb and Run Like Hell are probably my other favourites from this concert but there is plenty to see and enjoy. Sadly Richard Wright (keyboards and vocals) passed away some time ago.
If you want to see the lighting do the song Comfortably Numb from this same concert to 1994 Pulse concert division Bell tour!!! If you've ever seen the movie close encounters of the third kind the second half of the song Comfortably Numb will remind you of the end of close encounters. They used a 98 million set with lighting and the sound system back in 1994 dollars. And they pumped 233,000 watts of power through their sound system and lighting system!! Please just react to that song even just watching it for yourselves!!!
Saw them many times in concert! this was actually the first acoustic song I ever learned on acoustic guitar (back in the day, lifting the needle on the vinyl and resetting over and over again) back when us old timers had Stereos and record albums ;-), along with many Led Zeppelin songs!! I promise, once you start down THIS rabbit hole, there IS no turning back ;-) enjoy the journey!!!!
Anything from this concert (Pulse) will blow you away! David Gilmour is THE Guitar God. I first saw PF in 1967 and have loved their music ever since. Enjoy the ride!!
Glad you enjoyed it. You really do not fully grasp the meaning of the icon of the prism and the white light being split into a rainbow that signifies Pink Floyd, until you have listened to the album which that icon came from - namely Dark Side of the Moon. Your musical journey/education is incomplete until you have listened to the whole album from start to finish. It is not a collection of songs, but a complete work, like a progressive rock symphony, with each track flowing smoothly into the next without breaks and it tells a story. Incredible soundscapes and profound lyrics. This song is from the next album called Wish You Were Here, but Dark Side of the Moon is the one to go to next. There is a reason it is still one of the highest selling albums of all time, it is pure musical and lyrical genius. And it "has some kind of universal appeal in that it confronts a number of major emotional and psychological concerns" in the words of the lyricist Roger Waters. Their light shows were always as incredible as their soundscapes as you see. This song was from 1974, but the concert was in 1994. And David Gilmour, the lead singer and guitarist here is still going strong at 78 years young. In fact his daughter Romany has inherited some of his musical genius, and she sings lead in two songs on his latest solo album as well as being on his current tour. Here is David speaking highly of her as he explains one of the songs: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hCQcKUtg9kc.html ( David Gilmour - Between Two Points (Explainer) ) Recently Romany was doing a few songs at a local pub on their open mic night, and along came Dad, and they did Wish You Were Here together: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--jYMraZjPHE.html ( VR 360 - Romany & David Gilmour - Wish You Were Here - Open Mic at the Neptune Inn) But the most interesting thing about Romany, is she not only inherited some of the musical magic of her Dad, but she looks a lot like a young David. Watch this short photo album of Romany growing up, set to one of David's tunes: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-T_gQ_D5yhAE.html ( David Gilmour and Romany Gilmour - Kokineli )
Great Pink Floyd song, real music 😊. Songs Comfortably Numb, High Hopes , Sorrow all the same pulse concert. Also check out Nita Strauss’s songs Dead Inside and The Wolf You Feed, Fleetwood Mac’s song Rhiannon the Midnight Special edition . 😊
Previous comment brought up Led Zeppelin. Absolutely agree! My vote would be "Since I've Been Loving You." Whether you go with the live performance or the studio version, you go wrong or be disappointed.
Saw them first in 77' , the Animals tour in Boston...On the Turning Away, Coming Back To Life, Comfortably Numb, ,,, Watch the Pulse Concert for the full effect of Floyd...sooo many more great tunes👍
The beginning of this songs music is part of the former song. Where as they drop the front channels ( thinking your stereo just lost the front channel) then reintroduce the front channel.Pulse 1994 concert their last after selling 14 days in a row sold out. 200,000 watts of power,128 wireless speakers, outdoor concert needed FAA clearance ( gold laser), 3 stages on the move needed 53 semi. Watch 2 songs. "Comfortably Numb' , "Run Like Hell" for light show.
You guys NEED headphones for Pink Floyd...trust me on that. David Gilmour is considered one of the all time greatest guitar players that has graced this planet. Only one rule when reacting to Pink Floyd...NEVER pause a David Gilmour solo. Same concert...Comfortably Numb, Sorrow, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Run Like Hell, Coming Back To Life...just do the entire concert. Pink Floyd will give you feelings you never knew you had.
Pink Floyd pioneered the light and lazer shows for rock concerts. This particular tour in 1994 used 3 seperate truck convoys to leap frog each other around Europe and America to set up the next venue in advance...... millions of dollars worth of lights etc at every concert, and a large round disc above the stage to show movies, flood the stage and audience with light, and to refract and bounce the light. The lazers and other lights were in all colours and sometimes changing colour constantly. In this tour, they used a giant mirror ball to great effect in Comfortably Numb, and big, wide lazers in Sorrow that mirrored the lead guitar. In another tour they had a plane fly from above the stage, across some of the audience and crash into the far wall , bursting into flames.......all above a section of the audience.......and all with brilliant music well performed.
They are not touring as a band. I think they are doing some solo. I went a couple of months ago back and saw Brit Floyd and it was amazing as well as the laser show. If they come to your town, you definitely need to go see it. You won’t be disappointed.
greatest live band ever suggestions from the live pulse concert pink floyd (sold out 15 nights 20000 per nigh are high hopes comfortably numb great gig in the sky and hold on to your hats the last song run like hell it will blow you away i was there the noise was deafening and yet so clear im 70 yo now but still remember that night as the best live gig ever and david gilmore the guitar god still playing to sold out shows at 78 years old check out his live at Pompeii at 70 yo he still hasn't lost any of his godliness
David Gilmour is performing this song, just as beautifully on his current tour. When you react to Pink Floyd, the Pulse concert should be your go-to, but you will incur the wrath of the PF nerds if you interrupt a David Gilmour solo! Comfortably Numb, Sorrow, High Hopes, Coming Back to Life, Keep Talking, A Great Day for Freedom are all worth checking out.
You started out on the right foot. This is the best live concert I've ever witnessed in 6 decades. Which contains the best guitar solo live. 1994 pulse tour. Everybody's going to be feeding you comments on everything. You wanted to know more about Pink Floyd? Well you're going to get some amazing stories in your comments. They were the upper echelon the top shelf of music. Most people here are going to tell you to watch comfortably numb from the same concert. Normally I would agree. Then why not save that for a Grand finale one night. Get to know some of their other works. Because they all are exceptional. Listen to other guitar solo was out there. Van Halen and Van zandt and Santana, ect. And then come back to David Gilmore. And see for yourself and enjoy every step of the way.... Blessed be.
This is their fabulous Pulse concert from 1994. You should check out more songs from this great gig. And the light show just keeps getting better and better-----Pink Floyd is famous for that.
Nearly spot on. David Gilmour the guitarist and singer is 78 now and is currently on tour with his own band. Promoting his latest solo album. An yes he can still play as brilliantly as he did in the 1994 show you just watched.
For this performance, the band used the same radio-static introduction before the first guitar comes in. The lyrics are profound, and the performance, production, etc. from Pulse is top quality. Ashley is picking up on an important aspect of the whole production, that is the light show, which is as carefully planned and choreographed as ever part of the performance. Any song from this concert is worth reacting to. I'll also throw in a plug for a lesser-known performance from their previous live album, The Delicate Sound of Thunder, the song "Yet Another Movie." Though it's not a reaction standard, it is dynamic, with the usual tension-building Pink Floyd is expert at!
I would highly recommend listening to the studio versions 1st. The live versions are really cool and different, but they ARE different and IMO the studio version is the definitive version.
If I can suggest Boston - "Foreplay/Long time" and Rush - "The Spirit of Radio" I work for my cousins construction crew, and he still plays these two songs on the job site to this day.. lol.. gotta say tho, between these songs and some Dunkn's coffee, keeps us going for the day.. thanks for the video guys..
You would have had a much better experience having headphones on while listening to Pink Floyd, Please check out the entire concert in segments, after getting some good headphones and crazy gluing that pause button you keep pushing way too often 😜
The guitarist David Gilmour is actually still touring, but the band itself has been split up for a while. He toured quite a while as pink floyd in the 90s without former original band member Roger Waters who sang and played bass guitar.
There are so many great songs. You need to start with their concept album, Dark Side of the Moon, released March of 1973, which is where the prism logo you mentioned originated. It was on the cover of that album. Dark Side was intended to be listened to from start to finish, nonstop as each song continues into the next. However, you can break them up as there are numerous videos of each song on that album all over RU-vid. Next you can move on to their 1975 release, Wish You Were Here, which was a huge tribute to an original bandmate, Sid Barrett, who had to leave the band due to mental health issues. There are many hits & fan favorites on that album. Their next masterpiece is The Wall released in 1979. This is another concept album mostly written by the band's bassist, Roger Waters. He incorporates many childhood memories as well at trials and tribulations of a rock star that compels him to build a wall of protection around him in order to cope with life. Very deep meanings, I know, but the music is phenomenal!
10 days ago I was at the Royal Albert Hall in London to see David Gilmour (the main vocalist and guitar player in this video) play at the age of 78. Good guess at 80! He can still play, yes his voice is not as strong as it was but the concert was amazing. His performance of this song was fantastic. Don’t know where you are, I guess the United States. He’s playing the Hollywood Bowl and Madison Square Gardens soon. Go see him if you can.
Another band or person to check out is Stevie Ray Vaughan. Check out Texas Flood live at The Elmo Combo, Toronto Ontario Canada 🇨🇦 in 1983. You will be blown away by Stevie's guitar 🎸 playing. One of the best guitar players that walked the face of the earth.
The original members had split throughout the years. Sid Barrett, the original mind behind the band left in the mid to late 60s. Roger Waters, the other original creator and David Gilmore, Sid Barretts replacement, split in the early 80s after the release of the Final Cut album. Gilmore and the other two members toured as Pink Floyd and the Waters made a solo career performing original work as well as older Pink Floyd songs since he wrote many if not most of their work. Waters toured a couple of years ago and I think Gilmore still plays.
There is a ground error. Make sure that devices are connented to the same analogue ground point. A ground loop pick up a magnetic signal, like in this case, it will act as a one turn transformer that generate 120 Hz from a 60 Hz magnetic noice. The ground shall go like branches on a tree, one root and branches from there that never grow together with another branch or back to the earth.
Are you going down the Led Zeppelin rabbit hole?. If you do I would start off with The Song Remains the Same/ The Rain Song, Stairway to Heaven and then the icing on the top Since I Been Loving You. Do the live version from 1973 at Madison Square Gardens. Truly amazing concert. They made a movie of that concert called The Song Remains the Same. Cheers
Pink Floyd as they were when all their great stuff came out no longer tour together. Roger Waters and David Gilmore, the two heavyweights of the band, aren't exactly besties. Having said that, give "Another Brick in the Wall" a go.Do part 1 and 2 consecutively without pause (if possible). STUDIO VERSION PLEASE. Not movie or live please. I can't recall how much my friends and I would sing that song in the schoolbus on the way to school! It was basically an anthem 😁 Listen to the song and you'll get it
Comfortably Numb is a must-watch with some good lyrics and lighting as well as High Hopes, both from the Pulse concert. Give yourselves some grace on which songs to do reactions to and which ones to slide by. Otherwise, you guys will be swamped. But I would do Comfortably Numb, High Hopes, and Shine On You Crazy Diamond. I personally like that you stop to unpack the lyrics, but there seems to be some unwritten rule to not stop a guitar solo in the middle. I say react to a song how you wish to, but I just note that because folks will come out of the woodwork just to let you know you have committed a party foul if you interrupt a Gilmour solo. Keep unpacking those lyrics. Good job guys! Earned a subscriber here.
What the song is about is about one of the founding members of the band called Syd Barrett... Instead started doing LSD back in the '60s man when it started becoming kind of popular but he did just like a friend of mine did he did too much and he started losing his effing mind and the way completely did become the same it's a very long story go look up the biographies on RU-vid upset Barrett it's very sad. Back in the day Pink Floyd was trying to get him to straighten the s*** up and said Barrett was running around telling everybody I seen God I know all these things now, my mind has been expanded and I see more than the rest of you and Pink Floyd wrote this song asking Sid man can you even tell a smile from a veil anymore can you tell a Greenfield from with cold steel rail anymore they were trying to reason with him you have to remember this song was made back in the 60s when no one knew the effects of doing too much acid LSD this song is about trying to reason with Syd Barrett.. and wishing he had was there with them back with his old self with his good creative mind that he once had they were wishing he was there
I'm a new follower, nice to young people checking out some classic tunes. Try CountIng Crows Mr Jones one of the best vibe songs and videos ever. If you want to hear some soulful guitar try Jeff Beck People Get Ready (Rod Stewart on vocals) official video
I'm not bitching but I gotta do the studio versions first. RW's not on these live versions & he's the original bassist & lyrical mastermind for this band without him it's just not PF. Plus when these albums came out all we had was the studio - radio version. So to experience it like we did do the studio versions first. Keep it real for us.
Please go find my other comment here that explains this song to you because there's another song that Pink Floyd made along the same lines and it's about one of the founding members of Pink Floyd named Syd Barrett.. And the song is called shine on You crazy diamond this song is about when they were trying to reason was said and get him to come back to reality and lay off LSD the song shine on You crazy diamond is when they finally gave up on him and realize he was completely insane now that he had done so much LSD that he completely lost his mind but they still loved him so they made a song . Like to honor him called 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond's Please read my comments to you on the songs you guys look at you're going to learn things
Comfortably numb, time, shine on you crazy diamond, money, us and them, another brick in the wall, all off the same concert you just watched it's the pulse concert 94! Make sure you get the one with good sound! Because there is one that's got terrible sound quality
