Therapist reacts to Wish You Were here by Pink Floyd to discuss how being in pain WITH someone changes the experience of the pain. The situation can be the same, but the pain feels different when you have someone to swim in the fishbowl of life with.

Syd and David used to sit in their room playing songs on the radio together hence the radio in the beginning the song, the mouthing of the guitars was what kids did on air guitars when they couldn’t really afford a guitar. The song is David reminiscing the early days before syd left and the good times they shared as kids hence David Gilmore wishing syd was here!

This band saved my life. 10 years ago i was going through a difficult divorce, and lost everything. I was engaging in copious substance abuse, because i didnt have the coping skills and the want to get better. All i wanted was to not hurt anymore, and the substances were the easy way. I considered ending it all many times, and the only thing that stayed my hand was the knowledge that my actions would leave my family with immense pain that they had no answer to, and no way of fixing it. They didn’t deserve it, and at the end of the day, I couldn’t follow through. And it was the best decision that I’ve ever made. Stay here. No matter what you’re going through, there is hope and there is someone out there who cares. I would much rather spend time and listen to your story and commiserate than attend your funeral. Stay here with us.

There's a syd barrett era pink floyd song called "jugband blues" ,which would be worth a listen the band members genuinely believe it is the sound of Syd Barrett's LSD triggered schizophrenia, Syd overdosed on LSD by overdose I mean not enough to kill him but the toxicity was enough where his brain couldn't recover. He also wrote great songs like see emily play.

While some think Syd over used LSD and he may have, it's more likely he had schizophrenia. The song is primarily about Syd. But I and others think that in part it's also about the writers (Roger) father as well.

4:16 - AFAIK Syd Barrett wasn't so much LSD addicted as he was hitting onset of schizophrenia and there seems to be a desire at that time for some people with schizophrenia to jump into it faster - like their brain's holding a configuration that it can't hold anymore and the LSD speeds up the transition? That seems to be the broader back story.
@troubleondemand7703
@troubleondemand7703 2 дня назад
That's my take as well. You can't really get addicted to LSD because (iirc) you have to double the amount you take for it to work on consecutive days. Like if you took 1 hit on Monday, you would have to 2 hits on Tuesday to get the same high you had on Monday. At a certain point in order to trip you would have to drink a glass full LSD. I do think that his frequent use may have brought on his schizophrenia earlier than it may have come about naturally, but I don't expect we will ever know for sure. It may have played out the same if he never used it at all for all we know.
@doomhunter697

It's more complex. Part was his drug use, part was his mental issues and the part few people acknowledge- Fame can sometimes be overwhelming in of itself. He might have been able to handle one or two of those, but the three together were too much.

As much as I love the Pulse performance, there is a sweetness and melancholy in the original album version that is unbeatable, in a way that is much more intimate. The way the song was produced feels like you're in a small room, with a small group of friends, and one starts plucking at the strings, singing his heart out in memory of a lost friend. It's a gem, truly hard to replicate in a large venue. Try the album version sometime, on your own. If you lost someone, it will hit it very very hard, specially if you know the meaning behind the lyrics.

I didn't get Pink Floyd in my teens. I was like "How long is this intro? When does the song start?". But a few days after my grandpa died, I had to prepare a presentation for school and I just listened to what randomly came next on youtube. Probably because I looked up a few Pink Floyd songs before (again didn't really care about them) this song began playing, but this time it hit so deep. Pink Floyd has been my favorite band ever since. No other artist touched me as much through lyrics and music as they did.

Incredible reaction, as always! The song (and another (pair of) song(s) on the album, Shine On You Crazy Diamond (1+2)) IS about their former frontman, Syd Barrett, but it was less addiction to LSD and more the fact that he had SEVERE mental illness that hit in his early-mid 20s, and just sort of came undone. The LSD certainly didn't help, but I think that the general consensus from health professionals who know the story is that he had some sort of schizoaffective disorder that was emerging even prior to the drug use. It's a really tragic story. I think it was Gilmore who told a really rough anecdote: they were in the studio a few years after he left, and an old, disheveled overweight guy came in and was just watching them. They started wondering what the hell this old, weird guy was doing hanging out in their space, and then after a while it clicked: it was Syd, who was their age. His illness had so ravaged him that he was literally unrecognizable. The whole thing deeply affected the band, and even to this day a good 50 years later they noticeably have trouble discussing it.

So glad you’re experiencing Floyd. You might get more out of the band if you start out by doing their studio versions first. Four guys in the studio versus an entire ensemble group. It’s amazing how 4 guys can fill the sound they do. Roger was a master lyricist, and Gilmore replaced Syd, the guy that too much cid ironically enough. Roger is an adamant anti-war guy, so when I hear this song I feel like I’m listening to a war vet talking to another war vet buddy.

Correction - Syd Barrett the former front man for Pink Floyd that this song is partially about, did not drop out - the band left him behind because his descent into madness, initiated by probably overdosing on LSD left him incapable of communicating, or playing/singing his parts on stage. To get a better sense of how the band viewed this loss (he was a childhood friend of both Roger and David, and I believe Nick too), listen to Shine On You Crazy Diamond. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of Syd's descent (to insanity - his dissociative state was mental and permanent) "Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun... Now there's a look in your eyes like black holes in the sky". David, Rick, Roger and Nick all describe their recollections in Edginton's documentaries. David Gilmour has a tour right now for his latest album, and the concert features Wish You Were Here. Here he is at 78 years young, last Friday evening in Rome: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OBYvL-3iuFo.html ( David Gilmour - Wish You Were Here [Live From Circo Massimo, Roma🇮🇹 (27/09/2024)] ) Not only has David created some really excellent music, but his musical genius and looks have been passed on to his daughter Romany: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hCQcKUtg9kc.html ( David Gilmour - Between Two Points (Explainer) ) A lovely photo album of Romany growing up set to one of David's tunes: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-T_gQ_D5yhAE.html ( David Gilmour and Romany Gilmour - Kokineli ) Can you imagine having David Gilmour as your dad and music teacher? And she so looks like a young David! And she is on tour with him now, performing some lead and backup singing, as well as her harp.

I am one of those fish that swim lonely in a fishbowl after the death of my wife. That's life, and what you can't change, you have to learn to accept. I wish you were here, I often say to my late wife, and I hear her voice like an echo. I am already 70 years old, and alone in a dark old flat, I realise that I have only had one friend all my life, and that was my wife. I don't listen to the song very often because it is painful. I used to play it a lot on guitar as a teenager, but that was in a different world full of possibilities, wonders and life paths.

That intro rif that hits you in the feels, it does that for me too. Not sure if the reason is the same, but for me, it's because it's played on a 12-string guitar. They are among the most beautiful sounding instruments in my experience! May I make a humble suggestion, if the channel format allows it, you need to listen to a full album by Pink Floyd, instead of just individual songs. Each album tells a story, from start to finish. The album this track is the title track of is one of my favourites, and also among the shorter Floyd albums (around 45 mins) (whereas 'The Wall' is about 1h40?)

Factually, this album and the Wall by Pink Floyd are two of the deepest and most meaningful albums anyone could listen to.

If you lied this than Shine on you crazy Diamond you will love, Not many people find it emotional but it moves me. The Lyrics are one thing, but if the song had lyrics (like Great gig) the music tells you everything that needs to be said

"Did you exchange a walk on part in the for a lead role in a cage." Is my fav part. Always took it to be asking the question....is playing the lead role(what many aspire to) in a small confined thing realy more significant than a small role in something much more important.

This was from the Pulse concert film from 1994, which in my personal opinion is the best concert film ever. The only issue is that they recorded the video to tape instead of film, which is why they can never fully remaster the video.

My other fish (yes we were both Pisces) walked away so now I'm just one fish now. Guess nothing wrong with that.

I recommend taking a listen to some of Jeff Buckleys music, such as Grace and lover you should’ve come over.
