The first Toyota to get a solid-state battery is believed to be the next-gen Prius hybrid, not an EV. And Nikkei Asia study says Toyota is a global solid-state battery patent leader.
Why Solid State Batteries matter?
Nikkei Asia reports that solid-state batteries do away with liquid electrolytes used in conventional lithium-ion batteries. TDK and other companies have already put miniature solid-state batteries on the market, but solid-state batteries for EVs are still in the prototype stage.
According to InsideEVs Toyota plans to install its first solid state battery in a hybrid due to be launched in the next few years. We haven’t had any confirmation of previous reports which stated that the next-gen Prius would be the first commercially available car with a solid-state battery, but it still seems like a solid bet.

Toyota announced these plans over a year ago. Even though they have not spoken about the relative cost of solid state batteries, volume production is also in question. So considering that they will be rare and expensive, and seeing how much Toyota has actively slowed the adoption of battery-only EVs for years now. It only follows that their plans remain unchanged in first coming out with the first solid state batteries in only hybrid models (maybe not even plug-in hybrids). Meanwhile, Nio plans to deliver 150 kWh solid-state battery packs in the fourth quarter of 2022. The batteries use a solid electrolyte, silicon-carbon composite anode material and ultra-high nickel cathode material, and have a single cell energy density of 360Wh/kg.🥳

Not as silly as it appears. Toyota will be severely supply constrained with SS 🔋. By putting them in Prius they will make 5-8X as many as BEVs. On average driver a Prius PlugIn is rated 132 mpgE, BEV average 133 Prius has been proven extremely reliable in NY taxi 300k mi service life.

I actually saw the car in the Olympics, in person. Apart from these, there were buses with solid state batteries as well (Palette).

Why deploy in a hybrid?? It would seem to me that the greater benefit of a solid state battery would be in an all electric car (ie, for range and lower charge times)

Batteries in an hybrid are smaller ... It is rational to start small on a new technology, the risk is lower ! Do you understand the cost of a "recall" ?

Toyota the best of hybrids..I already owned Priuses since 2006 ..every generation..now a a 2021 Prius prime I do Lyft since 2016 12hrs a day..the only hybrid can handle that abuse up 300k miles and still running strong . I can wait to see that battery on my next prius
