Westhead's run and gun system was an exhilirating alternative to more conventional styles, but its success required exceptional players with tireless work ethics. Southern Cal transfers Kimble and Gathers were acquired as a package deal by Westhead, teaming them with one of the nation's best shooters in Jeff Fryer. Loyola's most impressive quality though, was its resolve in the face of an unfathomable tragedy.
Bo Kimble had one of the most prolific offensive seasons in '89-90 by any division 1 small forward over the past 40 years. Many I'm sure would counter that Westhead's system contributed significantly to his success, but it's tough to argue with 35 pts per game on 52.9 % shooting overall including 46% from behind the arc and 87% at the line.
Perhaps one day student bballers will be dissuaded from declaring so early or maybe the CBA one day will deter declaring and college basketball will be its once glorious self scouting will also encourage tenure and prospects easier to evaluate I can only cross my fingers and dream!
Hank Gathers vs a young Shaq…what might have been in the NBA. Unfortunately Kimble didn’t last long in the NBA but Chris Jax aka Abdul-Rauf was pretty solid though.
