In this piano tutorial, I share a couple of 2-5-1 jazz chord progressions that I've learned throughout the years. Turns out that there are a bunch of different ways that we can enhance this popular progression by simply using various chord substitutions!

Hi, sorry am new to music and i hope am not late, thanks for the tutorial, my question is, when or where do we apply this progression, like when moving from what to what, i do understand it to be a passing chord but i do not know to where?

Hey emmanuel great video. I saw that combining a C major and E min gives you a C7 voicing. Is there any cheat sheet you have created for that would help people like me have a formula for building those chords. I have a hard time remembering those 13’s and 11 chords. Is there any formula that can help to build those chords in any key. Using the example you used in numeric form would be 1/3min. Thanks in anvance and looking forward

Hi! Can have an example of a song where we apply this concept, just to have more inside on how to use different variations of 2 5 1
@EmanuelBlancoPiano
@EmanuelBlancoPiano 4 года назад
An example would be a song like Waymaker in C major. Instead of playing, F-C-G-Am you can use 2-5-1 and all the variations as a way to get to the C chord. So the basic 2-5-1 would something like, F-(Dm-G-C)-G-Am. But in this case you have to keep in mind that you have to fit in the 2-5-1 in the same time frame so that you land on the 1 (C major) at the correct time.

God bless you Emanuel. Why do you like jazz so much?.
@EmanuelBlancoPiano
@EmanuelBlancoPiano 4 года назад
I don’t specifically like the genre of jazz on its own but rather the Gospel/Jazz chords that come from that genre of music. Basically, the chords with extensions like maj7,9 etc.
@DWatson_8
@DWatson_8 4 года назад
@@EmanuelBlancoPiano Okay I understand. I really play a lot of contemporary Christian music and I have been trying to incorporate extensions of chords that really allow my music to sound amazing. My music tends to sound very plain and static, instead of open and arpeggiated.
@EmanuelBlancoPiano
@EmanuelBlancoPiano 4 года назад
Yeah, it all depends where you’re playing because sometimes these ‘jazzy’ chords may be considered too much in certain scenarios. But, its always good to have that knowledge of being able to play certain types of chords, while having the discipline to bring it back down to simpler chords. The way i learned most of what i know was by listening to different gospel albums and just trying to transcribe what they play by ear.

@@EmanuelBlancoPiano That sounds like a lot of hard work you have put in. Question, what would be a beginner way of playing the melody in the right hand?. When I try to play the melody it's like I'm way off from what I'm hearing.
@EmanuelBlancoPiano
@EmanuelBlancoPiano 4 года назад
Just play 3 note chords where the melody is the last note of the chord. Try out simple songs like Twinkle Twinkle, but with chord and their inversions.

Can you explain how you come to the conclusion of adding the "filler" notes to make the chords full?
@elliotcowell3139
@elliotcowell3139 2 года назад
learn the major scale in all modes for starters (this really is a must) Then, obviously in a basic triad chord you have a first, a third and a fifth. To get jazzy, add the 7th degree, or the 9th, or the 11th, or all three! Try adding a sixth, try flattening the 7th... you get the idea. It's just experimentation, eventually you get a feel for it. The real secret is p r a c t i c e

Actually, combining C Major and E min gives you C Major 7 (C E G B). You get Major 7 chords by playing every *other* note in the Major scale, starting with the 1 (1 3 5 7). If you keep playing every other note past the Major 7, you start playing 9 > 11 > 13. Since the scale has 7 degrees, just subtract 7 from any number higher than 7 to know which note you're playing. 9 = 2 11 = 4 13 = 6 So, for example, if you're in the key of C and you wanted to play a C Major 13, you would do 13 minus 7, which is 6. So, you'd be playing C E G B D and *A*. An easy way to remember b5 and b13, is: -b5 is simply a whole step up from the Major 3 -b13 is simply a whole step down from the dominant 7 -b9 basically kisses the 1 -#9 is the same thing as a minor 3rd C 7 is the C Major triad with the *dominant* 7 aka flat 7, which would be C E G Bb. Does this help?
