[2.5] The Beginner's Guide to Genshin Impact Lore - Mondstadt

If you ever wanted to get into the lore of Genshin Impact but wasn't quite sure where to start, you're in the right place! This Beginner's Guide to Mondstadt is part of a series of videos where I will be covering the lore of Genshin Impact in a nutshell. Excellent for beginners and new players to get a very quick understanding of kinda complicated histories, and also useful for experienced lore enthusiasts who just want a quick refresher.
This guide is NOT a comprehensive one. It's meant to be used as a framework upon which you can deepen your understanding. Therefore, there are a lot of things left unmentioned.
I have also made a couple of assumptions which will be outlined below.

*ASSUMPTIONS*
1) Barbatos is the wisp of wind that answered the prayers of the Gunnhildr Clan - This is not actually explicitly stated anywhere but thus far the only wind spirit mentioned in game is Barbatos. If it's not him, then a wind wisp basically appeared and then disappeared with no explanation.
2) Barbatos went from the Gunnhildr Clan to Old Mondstadt - The order of events is also unclear. I made this assumption purely because it makes sense that answering the cries of the clan would be the best way for him to learn about what's happening in the city.
3) The Red Headed Knight was a predecessor of the Raginvindr clan - This is mostly because the knight in the cutscene looks exactly like Diluc's father, Crepes. Also not explicitly stated anywhere.
4) Venessa chose to be a gladiator before pissing off the Lawrence clan - This is ambiguous and the exact point of time this occurred is unclear. I made this assumption because it made sense to the video's narrative.

**NOTES** - Correction: Venessa didn't directly defeat Ursa. Venti drove him away with a wink(?). Perhaps it would have been better to write, "As a result of Venessa's bravery and with the help of Barbatos, Ursa was driven away, not seen again for another thousand years." - Clarification: The official title of the "Four Winds" wasn't actually established until the Era of Aristocracy, but as far as we know the roles of each of the winds basically remained the same prior to them obtaining an official title.

Venti said to Ursa: "Vade retro draco". Go away dragon, in English. Then, Ursa was defeated by Crepus Ragnvindr. Unfortunately, he succumbed to the delusion that he used, and the knights covered up his story with the one where the harbinger, Dottore, is the hero ☹️ Also, I know this is pretty late. I only got wind of it after watching 3 times 😅 I think Vennessa didn't die-or there's no mention of it, as far as I know. Also, there's a discrepancy between the manga and the book, The Legend of Vennessa. In the manga, Vennessa didn't agree immediately on Venti's plan. In the book, she did. But I guess that's not too important 😅 Thanks for creating beginner's lore on Mond! At least when I forgot something, I'll just have to watch your vid instead of re-reading everything 🙂

@@Blueflamey I think we heard that Dottore ended up defeating the drake. As for whether that's true or not tho...I don't think we have any means of confirming it. I haven't heard of Crepus being the one who defeated Ursa.

Theory: because venti was able to friend various "monsters" (andrius + dvalin) along with many other "heroes" (nameless bard, Vanessa, the clans, ect) that's why friendship (or lack there of) is a common theme between anemo vision users

Most likely not. Yes there are a few that revolvrs around friendship like kazuha and sucrose, but sayu isn't. Also eula has friendship with amber but she is crying, while fischl has lack of friends, but she is electro. At this point personality may not link to visions.

@@yannlee7821 I agree with you that anemo doesn't always have a connection with the theme of friendship, it mostly has to do with freedom, and seeking what that means for every different individual. But even if anemo was closely related to the theme of friendship, I don't think that would... prevent vision holders of other elements from having meaningful friendships XD

btw, Andrius is also a god lmao he's not just a random monster that Venti befriended. he was actually the main opponent of Decarabian during the Archon War. he froze the entire land of Mondstadt which led Decarabian to create a huge impenetrable wind barrier to protect his people. Andrius conceded to Venti because he doesn't love humans enough and therefore, he cannot be a good ruler for them.

There’s been multiple theories of what personality traits correspond to which vision, and so far they all contradict each other, as of now there’s not a single solid trait that links people of a specific element together as there always is one of several characters that contradict that pattern

i read quite a bit of the lore as research, so i was already aware of all this, but it is a great video and reference point. And so, I’d like to talk about Andrius a bit more. He is not a fan of humanity, but he doesn’t hate them. He sees them as disappointing, dishonest, what have you, but acknowledges that it is the fault of the masses, not the individual, hence why he adopted razor and other human infants in the past. he welcomes them into his band of outcasts, but is always aware that even humans raised by wolves are still humans. they are inherently different, and are not to be involved in wolf matters, but he still sees them as his own. upon decarabian’s defeat, and being presented with the opportunity to become the archon, he knew he did not love humanity the way an archon should, and declined the position. he also realized that his powers were not suited to harbor and nurture life, and allowed his physical body to reenter the earth and land but he still remains as a spirit to protect the wolves and raise any infants that end up on his doorstep. he still agreed to become one of the four winds, though. whether it is for his wolves alone, any humans that come his way, a general love for and protectiveness over mondstadt, or simply because barbatos asked, i dont know, but i think hes a very fascinating character that i would like to see more of. tl;dr he holds a distasteful but largely neutral opinion of humanity and what humans become as they grow older, but welcomes outcasts and babies since they are impressionable and can be better what humanity would make them. because of this, he chose to decline the role of archon.

One of the main reasons I love Razor os because of his relationship with Andrius and what he represents... I Think the same way you said! Really hope we get to see more of him when Varka gets released, as he'll definitely expand Razor's Lore and Mondstadt's lore in general

Lovely idea, really refreshing to get to know Mondstadt once again. Side suggestion: Maybe you can put the source of the info [book, quest, artifact set, item, etc.) somewhere on the screen (in a corner, for example). That way, when new info that may conflict current info comes out, we can have easy and quick reference

Citations are usually in the description box. For a straight lore video I tend not to cite very much because basically all my sources are echoed on the Wiki's page for Mondstadt and therefore really easy to find, but I did link the manga and a few other things that you can look at.

I just love the little wordplay they have with "Lionfang" and "Dandelion" knight as a german it really amuses me since they basically both mean "Löwenzahn" in German. Löwenzahn could mean lionfang if you talk about the animal or dandelion if you talk about the flower.

I do feel Mondstadt has an even bigger part to play in the story of Genshin Impact. Despite it being the very first nation we explore, it could very well be the last or second to the last nation we could return to since it is closest to Celestia.

If the rumors that we'll eventually get an expansion into Northern Mondstadt, including Dornman Port, in the future is true, we may get more information behind Istaroth's involvement with Barbatos and Mondstadt which means an even deeper look into Mondstadt's past and history.

Well, in Attack On Titan, there are monsters roaming outside the walls that are eventually revealed to be humans from another nation. And in Mondstadt, there are ALSO monsters roaming outside the walls that are eventually revealed to be humans from another nation. :o

I think Barbatos also slept cuz he too was infected by the Abyss just like Dvalin. But unlike Dvalin who injested alot Venti was able to remove all of it.

I really hope they add more stuff in theme with Istaroth and Monstadt's legends and myths in Monstadt but I doubt they will since the area is mostly complete. The unnamed island related to Istaroth, the NPC Vind at Strombearer's Point that performs a long lost tradition, Andrius's past and lore, the hilichurl tribes at Dadaupa Gorge, Venti's former self... It all gives a profound sense of mystery, like the allure of a lost legend waiting to be uncovered. "Stories brought on the wind will bloom into legends in due time." That describes whole atmosphere of this place pretty well. Discovering the stories of what are now legends

@@TheDhanaMC According to a very old leaked beta map, it at least has an unexplored area atm. If it remain sin the game the area is called the Black Castle. Whatever that is. Additionally, we know of the existence of the Dornman Port from Yanfei and Eula's voicelines (the latter saved the former from Abyss Order shenanigans with cargo), which according to an NPC Is very far from the Nameless Island that contains connections to Istaroth. I don't think we're done with Mondstadt

I adore this series already, especially because Genshin's lore always comes in waves, you start to "forget" what happened in the past and you don't get all the important, gap-filling information at the same time as you play the story quests. It's a fresh reminder of the amazing world building and lore of Genshin Impact. Thank you! :D

Oh my goodness, I just got a random thought. Remember how in the Raiden Shogun Story Quest Act 2, we actually got to see spirits of the dead appearing due to the damage done to the Sacred Sakura? What if Andrius is also the same? What if there's a major ley line root that is perpetually severed, allowing for Andrius to take a constant physical, but not so physical form? That way his memory and the memory of his existence would be preserved, would it not? I may very well be wrong, but here's food for thought, I guess! :o

I read the manga back when I just started the game, thinking I could understand the story a bit more. I just ended up more confused until I just forgot about it over the course of new game lore. This video gave us a proper narration of the story prior to and during the beginning of the game, so this is much appreciated!

Nobody told me this when I started playing but it has been helpful. DO NOT USE ALL YOUR FRAGILE RESIN ALL AT ONCE. Use it only for character ascension stuff like bosses. Saves you days of resin honestly. Use your daily resin for artifacts, weapon and talent level up mats. I'm AR 57 and I have 40+ fragile resin.

I was wondering… the “ascending of Vanessa” could be a saying like we already say something like this to legends our time when they die. Maybe the falcon is just a metaphor for her family which is living in and protecting mondstadt to this day. We met Andrius and Dvalin as one of the winds, but not the falcon (yet).The Titel dandelion knight is passed to mortals ever since and it’s not part of her anymore. Maybe Venti just honored her with a title to remember her and make sure the second freedom is safe, or at least longer than the first freedom. But if my theory is true… that means that we can doubt that human can ascend to celestia in the first place and Venti tricked the Mondstadtians or at least pushed them to the right direction. Ahh… Genshin lore is giving me headaches.

This is a series I never knew I wanted but now I do. To get all of the lore in an easily digestible form without any speculation added is nice. Makes it clear what is actually known by us the players vs what we infer and speculate happened based on these known events.

Venessa never defeated Ursa The Drake though? Barbatos showed himself and then warned/talked to the dragon and the dragon looked afraid (?) stepped back and fly away (and later be killed by someone, a harbinger). I guess Barbatos really have some talent talking with animals. That's what I remember from the manga.

Very refreshing idea... Revisiting this feels so nice and the pacing was very well done too... A very nice approach for new players as well as veterans lore lovers, but as you said it is easy to lose track of everything as more information keeps coming in... This series is awesome!!! It’s a great refresher as a lore enthusiast myself (I actually didn’t know Barbatos went to the clan first, I thought he went into the city first), and definitely great for new beginners. My personal favorite Mondstadt lore, even though it’s not mentioned in the video, is the aristocracy expedition in Dragonspine. Or basically anything related to that mountain, but I’m assuming that’s for later. There is just something about that expedition in particular (perhaps the Dharkov Pass vibes and/or the source material) that sends shivers down my spine. Needless to say, looking forward to more of this! Keep up the great work, Ashikai! :D

Greatly appreciate this series.......though it is a summarized version, people should know at least this to enjoy the story (rather than debating about why a certain character can't clear spiral abyss within 30 second)......I always loved genshin lore and I'm loving your efforts to make more people curious about this.

This is the kind of video i've been looking for, a general retelling of every nation's story we know so far. I love Genshin's world, but i have trouble reading bunch of text with unknown context, not to mention there's like billion of them This kind of video will made me appreciate the whole Genshin's Lore as a whole, and i hope i can uncover more, like the Weapons and Artifacts lore that's still unknown but gave me an idea how the story went

This was super helpful and filled in some gaps I wasn’t even aware of! Looking forward to the rest of the series. Btw, Mihoyo sponsored another Matpat video, and this time he tackled the actual lore. I do NOT recommend that you watch it (unless you want to feel that strange feeling of absolute hilarity and abject disappointment at the exact same time) but it definitely made me realize just how in-depth and amazing at theory-crafting you are. This community is lucky to have you!

Aw, thanks! I haven't watched it directly myself, but I did have several friends live-text as they were watching it. I kinda lost it when he failed to recognize that Scaramouche has the Gnosis and went AWOL and that means the Tsaritsa only has 3, not 4.

I'm not really the best person to put together Honkai videos tbh. As for the "story so far" goes... I think there are enough gameplay movies and such on YT that people can passively watch that I'm not sure it's needed. If more people express interest I'll consider it, but for now I'm going to stick with historical events.

@@Ashikai maybe not now..in the future when more lore and story has been developed. As for honkai, i've played the game for over 4 years, even i forget quite a lot of the story early on. So i foresee the same with Genshin. Having some kind of story explained in a storyline is quite interesting for me. Allows people to refreshed their memory a bit. Anyway, thanks for responding.

Can you make a video on the origins of Maguu Kenki or the Great Wolflord? (Or just the rift wolves in general) I'm not sure how much lore there is, but I'd be very interested in seeing a vid on that!

There's not much on those tbh. If they become relevant in a Beginner's Guide series, then I'll mention them, but I probably won't do a video on them specifically. Riftwolves will get mentioned in my theory about the Hexenzirkel later though.

Since venti disappeared 2 times , doesn't fit i think venti disappeared for a major reason for was somehow involved by God of momens or time travel (like you mentioned in raiden story quest 2 analysis video)

This is such a nice video!! And up to this day, Varka is still missing lol I think Andrius doesn't hate humans. He is just neutral, and dislikes disloyalty and lies, so he doesn't like adults, but takes very good care of children, since they are still pure. He also acknowledged Varka, so he now gets the title of Knight of Boreas too. I also wonder who the "Blue witch" really is. She was the owner of the Crescent Pike and was in love with Mondstadt's "Robin Hood", but the fact she was called a Witch is kinda sus to me haha

I always leave citations in the description box, but for a very targeted lore video like this one, all my sources are echoed on the Genshin Wiki's page for Mondstadt, so I didn't bother with individual sources. This isn't the only request for more detailed citations though, so I'll try to get more detailed ones up later this week.
