Great narration and a few good productivity details too. While watching, I rough calculated that the 5 machines could knock it out in 2-1/2 days, but must have overestimated the ground speed. That was with 100% productivity basically, but every now and then refueling, maintenance, etc. are required too, as well as lost time even turning around.
@bigtractorpower
@bigtractorpower 6 лет назад
I think it takes about 5 days. They start at 7 am on maintenance and start running around 8 am and run until 1 am. The main factor is the trucks being filled and how fast the two drivers process the grain.

@dB-hy6lh 4 года назад
@@@georgemegas3691 - Converting US acres to metric hectares: 2,800 acres is over 1,100 hectares; this farm's 13,00 acres total in corn would be 5,260 hectares. For any country, that's a sizeable logistics challenge just to get it all planted, harvested, and in the granaries.

In the late 60's - mid-70's in Iowa my Dad harvested 1000+ acres of corn and soybeans every year with a 4-row JD combine by himself and with me and one other hand running the 300 bushel gravity flow wagons back and forth to the bins. And actually, prior to that, he even did an even more amazing feat: he harvested that much and more with a JD 55 combine, and then later with a JD 95, and then a JD 105, but just one combine at a time, and using old straight trucks with grain boxes on them. So I don't get too impressed with videos like this, but they are fun to watch.

I live in Illinois, but in the suburbs of Chicago. Like a lot of people in America nowadays, I've never had any real contact with the process by which I get my food everyday. Every time I've driven through central Illinois has been a somewhat depressing experience, particularly in the winter when it's just a flat wasteland of snow and dirt all the way to the horizon, but now I see why the landscape is so devoid of all the population density I'm used to. We need that land for massive farms like these and, honestly, this was just an astonishing video to watch. The sheer scale of these farms is really amazing. I'm a computer engineer and it makes me so happy to see the level of efficiency and automation these farms are working at today, all the technology and planning that goes into this. This is what America is all about and it's why only 1% of the population today are farmers opposed to 200 years ago when 95% of the population were farmers. Awesome!

Thank you for watching and for your comments. If you travel through IL in mid April and mid October all of those fields will be alive with tractors and combines. There is about a 10 day window to plant and to harvest for the best returns. The rest of the year is pretty quite in the fields.

@@bigtractorpower I completely agree, thank you. I farm in western Canada and am considering buying a coulter drill to seed wheat...JD, Morris, Bourgault et al. Thank you again for your great work!

The main 60 ft air drills used here for wheat and some times for soybeans are John Deere 1890 and Case IH 500. These disk drills do a nice job noticing wheat over corn stalks. One farm I film at used 3 60ft Horsch Panther drills with shanks. They use those to seed wheat in tilled ground and no-till soybeans into wheat stubble.
@sean3223a
@sean3223a 5 лет назад
@@bigtractorpower thank you very kindly. Yes, I seen that great video(s) you have with the Horsch's but for my large acres of arid western canadian dryland that shank appears to be far too aggressive at speed to be suitable for anything other than my section of irrigated land. A neighbor of mine uses an 1890 but mildly complains that he is not sold on the economics due to higher year over year maintenance. I thank you again for your responses and your great video's, and again I'd like to briefly allude to your peers who tend to have great video footage which they tend to ruin with horrid music. At least put a good farming video to a good led zepplin song haha, jk, happy new year from Canada :)

I am guessing they have interseeded a cover crop in this field. Either that or they have a serious weed issue in this field. I would also love to see their grain handling facility to be able to process this amount of grain each day especially at 22% moisture. They have to have one hell of a dryer to handle around 600 acres of corn each day. If it was just 500 acres each day and the yield was 150 bpa that would be 75,000 bushels. One word sums that up DAMN!
@bigtractorpower
@bigtractorpower 6 лет назад
The farm has a 3 million plus bushel grain bin system. I will do a video on it some time. Those are weeds you see. Once the corn dries down it opens up sun light and allows weed growth to start. Hot summer weather and rain allows weeds to grow well here in Kentucky. You see it in all the area corn fields. It's not a big deal as the stalks and weeds are disked under to make way for the wheat crop.
@terrellfarms1
@terrellfarms1 6 лет назад
In one spot if the field it looked like tillage radish so that is why i asked. We see a lot of Tropic Croton and grasses start coming through once the fields begin drying down in South Georgia. The only grain elevator around our area that has that kind of capacity is the ethanol plant about 30 minutes from us. Corn and beans are minor crops for our area though. Cotton and peanuts are the kings here.
@chrisbuckler5246

i would also like to see they grain handling system and my other question is how many trucks are they using to keep all those grain carts empty
@bigtractorpower
@bigtractorpower 6 лет назад
+Terry Presnal In August 90 degree heat mixed with rain and the shrinking corn leaves as they dry up depletes the shade canopy and allows weeds to take off. It's not a big issue the crop is made and the field is plowed up to sow wheat.
@bigtractorpower
@bigtractorpower 6 лет назад
+Terry Presnal cover crops are gaining popularity here but most are planting cereal rye after harvest and mostly after beans. 95% of the corn acres are seeded in wheat.

@bigtractorpower 2 года назад
Those are weeds. The corn harvest where this was filmed in Kentucky starts around August 20. The corn starts drying down in late July. As the corn drops it’s leaves in the late summer it allows sun shine to work with late summer rains to germinate the weeds in the hot 90 degree days. The weeds do not hurt anything because the corn is done growing. As soon as the harvest is complete they disk the stalks and weeds under to plant winter wheat. Here is the same farm disking the corn stalks ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ONAD3OO-7rg.html

@bigtractorpower
@bigtractorpower 6 лет назад
+Kanlife the field is disked up and seeded to winter wheat. The weeds are gone as soon as harvest is over. Mainly the 90 degree heat of August, rain and the opening of the shade canopy as the cinema leaves pull back cause the weeds. It's common in every field of corn here. All the corn ground goes to wheat so the weeds don't last long.

Mention was made tho of drying capacity, which at 22% moisture is a tough one to keep up. Still tho....must have a darned good dryer(s). And again, I appreciate the great narrative. The more little details you add, the better it gets. The hookup to the head is fast,... a shot at the mating ends would be nice.

@bigtractorpower
@bigtractorpower 6 лет назад
+Fishingfool2017 the farm runs 5 24 row Kinzes to plant with. I think the 12 rows keep everything moving well.
@wildturkey5838
@wildturkey5838 6 лет назад
Another problem is that bigger headers mean slower ground speed; the combines can only clean so much grain at a time. Matching the header size to the planter size makes life much easier, even in the days of GPS. Also there's times you can go places with a 12-row header on the machine when you'd have to dismount and trailer a 16. And there's the extra 25% cost of buying the bigger header. Altogether the 12 rows are a better choice for a lot of people.

just sitting here thinking that but there's also the fact of more tractors if you lose one to downtime you still have others running

I'm a CASE IH guy and I find it funny how you failed to compare the case 9 series with the John Deere 9 series? Didn't want to make your green equipment sound inferior did you? Just saying you should compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges.

+Josh Koch watch our Big Tractor Power video featuring two Case IH 9240 Axial-Flow combines with 16 row corn heads. The 9240 is the biggest corn eating machine on the market. I mentioned the 8240 in this video to point out it holds more than class 9 John Deere.

Millions in equipment used a few weeks out of the year aside from the 4wd tractors, how do farms depreciate assets like this or are these rented for harvest time?
@bigtractorpower
@bigtractorpower 6 лет назад
+OttoVonNitro the machines are not rented and on the farm year round. I am not an accountant so I do not know how it all works out.

+ScottyRockTrains that's a good question. The class five combines of today were the biggest size combine on the market 20 years ago. The class size is a more recent term I think.

I'm very surprised that Kentucky has so much corn. I always assumed corn states were Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Iowa, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Minnesota.. but that's about it. Like the traditional corn belt ya feel?
@bigtractorpower
@bigtractorpower 5 лет назад
There are other big corn areas like Kentucky, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Missouri, Texas, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina North Carolina and South Carolina. In Florida and Georgia they can double crop corn on corn in the same year.

+maddy s this group clip was filmed in September 2016. There are six combines there. You might notice the 4th in walk around has a 12 row folding head. It was an S790 being tested out. That's why there are six. You might notice the parked 9420Rs have the 2016 steel fuel fenders and the 2017 footage shows the new poly fuel fenders.

Is there a point with herbicide where you could just spray a diluted mixture to the point any decrease in yield is offset by savings on expensive chemicals? BTP answered below about these being late growth weeds, but most fields you can see from one end of the field to the other without a single weed. Anyone know of any field trials?

Interesting, it takes them double the time to do it then the theoretical combine-capacity? How much of that is weather delay? I just wonder if the inefficiency or lack of supply chain gear is compensated by something else. Is it redundancy in case of combine failure, short weather window capacity, or what?
