High level of management going on in this operation for sure!!! Huge investment in technology and machinery to make it all happen but that's a real commitment to saving and building up the ground! I think I follow most of the process except what they might be spraying behind the strip-till toolbar ? Afraid harvest is a long way off for most of the Midwest with so much delayed planting!!! Thanks for the video!!!!

My boy loved the video! Are cover crops a more common thing out East? I’ve rarely if ever seen them here in Nebraska like that. Forgive my ignorance since I’m not a farmer.
@bigtractorpower
@bigtractorpower 5 лет назад
Great to hear. I have liked tractors since I could walk and talk. Cover crops are gaining popularity in many regions. In order to have a cover crop succeed it has to be seeded with enough time to grow before frost sets in. Nebraska may be too far north and have an early freeze to prevent cover crops. Here in Kentucky corn is harvested in August and early September and there won’t be any frost until the very end of October or early November. Some farm’s in places like Ontario Canada spread cover crop over standing corn now so when they harvest the corn in October and November the cover crop is already growing.

Yes. The Blu Jet just works the ground where the corn seed will be planted. It is a method between no-till and full tillage. The seed gets a fully worked seed bed without plowing up the entire field.

@bigtractorpower

I’m assuming this is a corn and soybean operation seeing that most dairy farms would allow the rye to grow until the spring and mow it down to chop for silage
@bigtractorpower
@bigtractorpower 5 лет назад
There is very limited dairy in the area. Only a few Amish dairy farms. This farm raises corn, wheat, canola and soybeans. The rotation is Corn to wheat or canola seeded in October and harvested in June with soybeans double cropped over all wheat and canola acres to be harvested in October. Corn is planted over the soybean acres in March. ,

Cereal rye won't frost kill in that part of the US unless it is planted very late in the fall, oats would be a better choice for a winter-kill option. Typically an herbicide "burndown" is used in conventional operations to kill cereal rye. Sometimes chemical and tillage is used, sometimes just tillage. I have some friends who run organic operations who use a roller-crimper to terminate rye when it is at pollination, then no-till soybeans into the residue.
