1/2 of 5/3 is 5/6, 2 3/4 + 5/6 will be just under 3 3/4. 1/6 below to be exact. Of the answers which one is close to 3 3/4? A, the other 3 answers are just too far away to be correct.

By inspection. 2 3/4 + 5/6 will be a little less than 3 3/4. Answers B and C are too small, answer D is too big. Answer A must be correct. And to verify, 43/12 is greater than 3 and less than 4, choose it.

Seems unnecessarily complicated. Why not use parentheses to remove any doubt about order of operations?
@gavindeane3670
@gavindeane3670 3 месяца назад
A couple of things about that... Firstly, if you did that then this wouldn't be much use as a tool to teach order of operations. Secondly, the only bit of the order of operations that you need for this is knowing that multiplication has higher priority than addition. As that rule is so completely ubiquitous and fundamental to the way mathematics is written, it's entirely reasonable for teachers to teach it. It would be one hell of an omission if they didn't.
@thomasharding1838
@thomasharding1838 3 месяца назад
The use of parentheses make the problem much clearer and easier to solve quickly. You do not have to scan over a long equation to see where the "x" and "÷" are to determine where to start. And it is easy to see a ÷ as a + sometimes. So USE THE PARENTHESES!
@gavindeane3670
@gavindeane3670 3 месяца назад
@@thomasharding1838 If that was how we did it then mathematical notation would be more cluttered and less readable. Confusing ÷ with + is a non-issue because nobody should be using ÷ anyway. The inline division operator is /. And anyway, division is normally written as a horizontal line with numerator above and denominator below.
@thomasharding1838
@thomasharding1838 3 месяца назад
@@gavindeane3670 Yes, division is normally written as the diagonal line but in many printed texts and RU-vid Videos, the ÷ symbol is used. Parentheses makes things clearer by directly tying function together when an order of operations is required.
@gavindeane3670
@gavindeane3670 3 месяца назад
@@thomasharding1838The only rule that's relevant here is that multiplication has higher precedence than addition. That rule is ubiquitous and so fundamental to the way mathematics is written that nobody should have difficulty with it once they've been taught it. Yes, in general it is fine to use parentheses to add clarity, but the entire point of this video is to TEACH the precedence rule, so adding parentheses would completely defeat the object. There's a much bigger problem to complain about in the way this question is written. In mathematical notation we simply don't use the 2¾ mixed number format. The correct way to start the expression he's written here is either 3 2 + ----- 4 or just 11 ------ 4

Nothing wrong with improper fractions. Expressing an answer like this as an improper fraction is normal. Particularly if, as is often the case, you're working out the value because you need to do something with it (more calculations, substitute it back into an equation or formula, or whatever).

Technically none of them are correct because the question is invalid. We don't use mixed numbers like 2¾ in a mathematical expression like that. They’re OK for expressing a single value in isolation but they’re not correct notation within a mathematical expression. If we assume you wrote the beginning of the question correctly as 2 + ¾ +… or 11/4 +… then the answer is 43/12. Interesting that you present the correct answer as an improper fraction but you didn’t use an improper fraction in the question.
@rickkenson7471

Who told you "we don't use mixed numbers"?
@gavindeane3670
@gavindeane3670 3 месяца назад
@@rickkenson7471 It's a bit of a weird way of writing a number. We all learn it in primary school when we first learn about division, and we express the result of a division as a number plus a remainder, but beyond that elementary level the mixed number format isn't really a thing. It doesn't work in a mathematical expression because the mixed number 2¾ is writing two things adjacent to each other, the 2 and the ¾, which are being added, but in mathematical notation writing two things next to each other indicates multiplication. Correct fractional representations of that value in mathematical notation would be 3 2 + --- 4 or 11 ------ 4
