Joe is back! It had been almost 3 months since he'd flown and the rust showed -- he's a good sport though. Watch along as I remind him of 2 essential things about all flying, especially flying IFR.

Your call out on trim was spot on. I can still hear my old CFI's voice saying "trim to hands-off!" every time I fly. Now that I fly an airplane without an auto-pilot, that habit has become a life saver. Another workload saver is to take one's hands off the yoke/stick when tuning, twisting, briefing approaches, and any other time one is not intending to make inputs (except in turbulence). When trimmed out, the plane will fly straight and level and one cannot put in an "accidental" input when leaning over to operate the avionics. So much easier.

Thanks for the interesting video on holding course with trim and right rudder. Just a critique of your microphone use. You are overmodulating due to volume and proximity of the mic to your mouth. Experiment with placing the mic just about 1/4" further away than you had it. If that solves the issue, stop there, or add a little more distance if it is still a problem.

I am indeed forgetting to use more rudder to counteract yaw disturbances in flight. That's useful regardless if we're IFR or VFR. Thanks!!

When I learned this, I found that it not only helped when under the hood but also made vfr flying easier and more accurate. Awesome lesson!!!
@TheFinerPoints
@TheFinerPoints 3 года назад
Yes! Indeed - it’s ALL the same. You can see, for example, when he pitches up and airspeed decreases the plane starts to pull left from the increased left turning tendency - it’s all the same. Only VFR we have the “Lindbergh” reference 😊

The Finer Points yup, I noticed that... all good stuff, I must say it took me years to figure out 1/2 the stuff in your videos... all good stuff!!!!

Yellow post it note sticky's. Work great for covering instruments. My CFII loved to bust out the yellow sticky notes. Oh no, you're on short final and your vacuum pump just failed.

Flying skills diminish rapidly from lack of use. The proof I have for that statement is my first VFR "real landing" in 6 weeks. UGLY!!! Nice Video. I always learn something. Thanks

Try doing your first landing after 2mths in an aircraft you haven't flown before. Not a pretty sight. My cfi flew a PA28 before lockdown and during it He sold it and got a C172R.

@@flyingturtle4313 Nice. I was embarrassed enough trying to figure out the aircraft I've known for 7 years. It's good to get flying again.

Yep, sad to say flying is a perishable skill, wished it wasn't but after a couple month hiatus my 1st few landings weer ugly! Not TERRIBLE, just couldn't believe how "OFF" I was, seemed like I was just behind the plane. My POV, is if you're rusty VFR only flying until your back in the groove!!

I've been ready to take my IFR checkride for a month or 2. I caught Covid19 and was very sick for about a month. I hope I get it done soon. Watching the rest of your video, I also noticed a couple of things. When I'm scanning, if I'm honest, I hardly ever pay much attention to the attitude indicator. Maybe I'm an old soul.

Great video! I am currently working on my IR, and I have a bad habit of doing this on the G1000! My instructor keeps saying keep up the instrument scan a lot faster to stay ahead of the plane.

People find it weird that i fly with my kneeboard even on short flights where I never leave the pattern. One, I come from helicopters where everything has to be strapped down and accessible ahead of time. But in airplanes, even recreational fun flying, I continue to strap it to my leg 100% of the time. Because you simply never know when you're going to need some of the information available to you quickly. Things can change, unexpected things can happen...

Watched this video yesterday and learned something new about the turn indicator. That's awesome! As I was drifting off to sleep last night a random thought about the magnetic compass popped in. Why didn't you reference the magnetic compass? Would that be counter-productive to this exercise? I know I struggle with ensuring that it's part of my scan and have to be thoughtful about including it in the scan. Truly just a curiosity question as a result of a random thought.

Same issues here, I look up from briefing my approach plate and somehow I'm at a different airport two states away.

The problem here is and it happens to me , when the instructor asks to find something while maintaining altitude and heading, we as student, will need to multitask. But in real life, if we are flying to a location, all this is done before we get to the airplane. That way we avoid overloading our self. Like the student was doing, he was looking for the VOR frequency. The instructor is overloading him with new tasks.

Today I flew an ILS approach. I activated vectors to final. I set up the approach including identifying localizer. On my Garmin 630 it switched to LNAV after passing FAF. ATC vectored me across the course inside IAF and then Back to course to get established. Why does the ILS switch to LNAV?

Great tips Jason! You ready to come out to San Antonio, TX and work with me on some instrument flying?
@azcharlie2009
@azcharlie2009 2 года назад
I would challenge anyone who thinks they could look up an unfamiliar radio frequency and stay on heading without some help. Like an autopilot. Using trim is a big part of it, but it's the multi tasking during IFR that gets pilots in trouble. The airplane will not stay level. Sooner or later, it will start to bank if you're not paying attention. Maybe Cessnas are better at that than Piper low wings.

Mark Juza That’s a great one! I play guitar so that really hit home for me. My guitar chops do get rusty if I do not play much and when my chops are sharp I play effortlessly. I am going to apply this thought to my flying.
