Spent two days in the historic town Mahabalipuram immersing in its culture, history, architecture and food. It was a feast for the mind, senses and tummy. Though centuries old temples embellished with the art and culture of bygone eras are abundant in Tamilnadu, Mahabalipuram is so special. Mamallapuram has undergone a drastic change in the last two decades. So many high-end beach resorts dotting the stretch from Kovalam till Mahabalipuram and some of the international hotel chains asserting their presence in this tiny coastal town, convey the prominence this once sleepy coastal town has gained.
There is tremendous development in food scene as well in Mahabalipuram, which is mainly dominated by the multitude of shack kind of local seafood eateries in the Mahabalipuram town and then the restaurants attached to the resorts or high-end hotels. Although motel-style eateries have sprung up along the East Coast Road, they can be hit or miss.
During our culinary tour in Mahabs, we discovered five noteworthy places:
1. Joe's Cafe - One of the few in Mahabalipuram offering continental breakfast, Joe's caters mainly to international visitors desiring their toast and coffee. Despite its size, with only 4-5 tables, the cafe serves excellent coffee and breakfast.

2. My Goodness Cafe - Located in the Fisherman Colony, amidst numerous seafood shacks every 100 meters serving the typical fried fish, squid, prawns, and crabs in red masala, My Goodness Cafe stands out. It's different, with impeccable service and delicious offerings like a whole deep-fried red snapper, Prawn pepper masala, and fried Calamari rings.

3. Latitude 49 - This is a gem of a place for exceptional food, especially Southeast Asian. From Prawn Mi Goreng to Vegetable Bibimbap, Asian Styled Steamed Fish and Kung Pao Chicken, you get the real Asian flavours.

4. Mamalla Bhavan - Vegetarians have very less options in Mahabs, but Mamalla Bhavan fills that void with excellent South Indian breakfast, lunch and dinner options. A 65+ years old eatery, perfect in every sense for a decent South Indian vegetarian fare.

5. Hotel Guru - This simple unassuming eatery is the best non vegetarian restaurants in Mahabalipuram without an iota of doubt. It's rare to find such consistently outstanding Chettinad specialties, even in Chennai.
