I was an F-16 mechanic at Luke AFB in the early 80's. There is nothing like watching them and the F-15's on the base doing unrestricted FCF (functional check flight) straight up vertical climbs, especially at dusk when all you could see were the diamonds out the back of the engines. Gave me a chub back then and still does 36 years later.

charlie dee; Always wondered if it's kind of a drag you guys do all the critical work and it's Lt. Fab Flyboy climbing-in, up and away and then returning it for you to fix and clean...
@charliedee9276
@charliedee9276 4 года назад
@@docwill184 We actually got along very well. Sometimes the butter bars (2nd Lt, one gold bar) would give you shit but they quickly realized the Crew Chief or any other qualified tech could "red X" the plane which grounded it for whatever reason they saw fit. Once the pilots got to 1st Lt and Captain they knew their lives were in our hands based on our proficiency as technicians, and they gave us much respect for that. Look at the canopy, there are 2 names. The pilot on one side and the crew chief on the other. When in the air the plane belongs to the pilot, if the tires are touching tarmac it belongs to the crew chief. I did get a ride in a B model, the biggest thrill in my life by a long shot.

Doc Will Pilots dont just show up and go up. They have a shit ton of work to do outside of flying. So much so that US military has issues with pilot retention. Yeah you heard that right, some of the fighter pilots dont wanna be pilots! Mountains of paperwork, unnecessary courses and classes, so much extra bs.

There was a F-18 Blue Angel at the airport getting ready to take-off. We were listening to the radio traffic. Tower gave him "position and hold"(this was years ago) and "contact departure". He hadn't even released the brakes, yet! He called departure and got clearance for unrestricted climb to flight level 180. He accelerated down the runway lifted about 10 feet into the air and retracted the landing gear. That f-18 went hauling the length of the runway just a few feet off the ground. Afterburners blasting. When he got to the end of the runway, the pilot pulled the nose to vertical and up that plane went. Out of sight, vertically. Nice video. Very steady camera work.

while off the coast off Viet Nam in 71 for holidays we'd get a "Holiday flyover" I was starboard lookout, 2 F4 Phantoms came straight at our bow from dead ahead then went ballistic and apparently shot for a star because I watched them for a good 5 minutes those 4 afterburners turning to 2 then 1 with the distance... then I realized they had pealed off shortly after cutting back the throttles and left me starring at a star...

The F14 pilot was getting very inpatient and said "im burning lots of fuel here, clear me for take of" tower replied "negative, hold short". The little bug killer landed and taxied off the runway. The tower then cleared the F14 for take off. He took the runway, went to full power and began his tale off roll. He lit the afterburners and lifted the nose, burning the runway all the way down. It was not a straight up vertical climb. It was about a 55 to 60 degree pitch up. The camera angle makes it look steeper than it actually is. Super Hornet bleeds too much energy in the vertical and can result in "leaf falling" after a stall, which is why pure vertical is rarely used with Super Hornet.

I waa in the Navy in the early and mid 70s , before FA-18s . I was on a Destroyer. We plane guarded for the aircraft carrier . Several of them over 5 years . The F-14 , Tomcat, in the 70s was the #1 Fighter Plane , Hands Down in the world . Spent 5 years at sea watching them suckers take off and land and do touch-and-gos on different aircraft carriers . Only a sailor on a plane guard destroyer or a sailor on an Aircraft Carrier or a pilot that flew them can tell you how amazingly awesome they look doing this . It's just amazing , literally amazing , the power those suckers had and the brave pilots that flew them . I have seen the F-18s in the Blue Angels at a couple of Air shows . F-14s , as far as I'm concerned though still own Top Gun status in my books , but then again , I'm an old salty dog . 64 years old July 17th 1955 and destroyers rule . America rules , and God Bless Our Military and God Bless Our Country and God Bless American Veterans and Civilians . America First , all others , take a hike .

The legacy F-18's were upgraded to the super hornet without any competition... sort of. Those special interests groups that wanted to see their competitor, the F-14 program, die did their best to continually delay its proposed 'Super Tomcat 21' upgrade. They had very powerful friends that, at the time, included vice president Dick Cheney. As a result, when F-18 super hornets were approved for production, they claimed the F-14 was no longer needed and too expensive unfairly pointing to the Rhinos greater range, size, advanced avionics, more stealthy radar cross section. Without any competitors on the drawing board, and since delays continued with the F-14, they were abruptly decommissioned and cancelled without one shot fired. The corruption here was self evident. While the F-18 F/A super hornet does everything okay, it doesn't excel, or do anything, great. The proposed Super Tomcat 21 would have had mach 3 speed, thrust vectoring engines, greater range, more powerful engines, and upgraded avionics. It would've been the fastest, most deadly fighter in our military offering true air superiority, had our greedy and corrupt politicians not delayed it/set it up for failure.

Guess you weren't paying attention during Desert Storm or Afghanistan. Once the radars have been taken out by the "stealthy" assets the F18's are free to roam.. In any campaign there will be F35's and F22's in the air as well for air superiority while the Hornets take out ground targets with precision strikes as they have been doing all along.

Imagine if they had been in burner. The smoke goes away and so does the airplane. With no weapons on the wings they can accelerate going straight up. In burner they have in excess of 60 thousand feet a minute climb rate. When the pilot is using all the available power (which is rare around civilians) these airplanes are amazing. While not as big as the Tomcat or as fast, they have just as good a thrust to weight ratio. Basically rocket ratio. Can you say, going up!

You are a little on on the "unrestricted climb"! The "climb" was IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE PLANE LEFT THE GROUND. I retired from the Navy 40 years ago and say MANY of those type take-off by F4's. Magnificent sight and I really loved to watch them! When an F-4 hit stage 4 in after burner mode the boom was very loud and windows in near by houses were know to be broken!

@Mark Ward from a logistical standpoint I greatly have to disagree. The f-35 has stealth and advanced data link over the super, but f18s have triple the sortie rate, greater payloads, and are much easier/cheaper to fix while still boasting some of the best avionics around.
