hey, glad people are getting mileage out of the fan translation. took a long time to put together, ever since we first found the game in 2013 or so - i have to agree with many of the points you made about it being a lot more boring and linearly paced than the first game. it took a unique formula and ironed it out to a more conventional type of game, which really hurt its potential in my eyes. cheers.
never understood the importance of time in a lot of eastern and some parts of western religion. isn't time kind of irrelevant or unusable when it comes to spirits, gods, and other worlds? like does heaven look different or change at 3AM compared to 3PM?
@@kobold7466if such a concept of time exists in the realm of the living, such concepts probably also carry over to the afterlife. It may very well be a mirror of the living. So a night and day cycle isn't out of the question. Celestial beings in heaven also eat and sleep, apparently.
FINALLY someone is covering Tong Nou! I fell in love with this wacky game and it's eclectic style six years ago, looking to other games by the developer. Easily one of my favorite early 3D games and you do a great job showing off how wild these games are.
SO glad i found my way to this channel, your content is just what the doctor ordered, and i see the channel blowing up in no time. Great presentation and commentary all around. Also, i really appreciate you adding actual subtitles. As someone with an audio processing disorder, its REALLY nice to actually be able to fully immerse myself in the video and understand whats being said. Thanks for the hard work, cant wait for more!!
Honestly the dated as hell CG is what got me. It's nothing truly fascinating, that's just how CG looked like in 1995, but it's always fun seeing what bizarre imagery people made, or, at least, tried to make, at the time.
Great vid! I love learning about strange obscure games like these ones. I hope you'll continue to cover Japanese games so that I can continue to unleash japanese lore on you hehe :) *cracks knuckles* The five magatama Rin needs to collect might allude to the Shinto concept of Ichirei Shinkon, according to which, the mind consists of a spirit (naohi) that's connected to four souls, all of which represent aspects of one's personality. They're the aramitama (rough/crude spirit, the most raw, untamed, animalistic aspects), nigimitama (harmonious spirit, the diplomatic side), kushimitama (wonderous spirit, the aspect that percieves and understands) and sakimitama (joyous spirit, the aspect that loves and cares). The fact that they represent the five elements is probably derived from Taoism and the concept of wuxing, the five phases. And they're magatama because magatama are believed to represent souls. As for the second game's minimap, the Sun, Moon and Star palaces represent the three lights (三光). They were meant to symbolize Amaterasu Omikami, Tsukuyomi no Mikoto and Susano-o no Mikoto respectively. The Magatama planet is in the middle because it's believed that these three forces influence one's fate. Also the Milky Way's archaic name in Japanese translates to "Heavenly River" and it was believed to be the border between Heaven and Earth. Rivers in general represent transitional areas (liminal spaces if you will).
awesome video! i'd love to see a video of his other two pc games (roly polys & roly polys world tour) which were previously lost media and were very recently found and preserved
Have you ever heard of the game Total Distortion? That is a weird and old game that seems right up your alley. It also has probably the best game over song of any game I've seen.
Dude I’ve just found your channel and I’ve been binging all your videos, these are really great and you’re covering lots of stuff I’ve never seen before. Keep it up!
If you like the experience of playing a really weird game that begins to reveal its internal logic to you over time, I'd recommend Ice Pick Lodge's The Void if you haven't tried it already.
@@dungeonchillprepare for a lot of confusion though. It's a great and bewildering game and nailbiting hard on the first playthrough, but its art direction and uncannyness is pretty worth it.
Each video I go back on, I have the pleasure of watching you grow. I subbed at maybe 3 or 4k, and i hope you keep growing, your videos are so freaking good!!
always wanted to play these games and now i can with virtual machines. i still remember the day i first found out about Dream Emulator and finding out he did other games on PC that were more crazy awesome looking. also on a side note i hope his other PS1 game Tokyo Wakusei Planetokio will get a fan translation some day.
Have you heard about "Iblard Laputa no kaeru machi", "Cookie's Bustle", "Kowloon's Gate", "Garage Bad Dream Adventure" and "Nemuru Mayu"? I think they would be a good fit for your channel
@@dr.ramilo84 You're not wrong either, since Miyazaki took inspiration from Inoue's art to create the movie. They even did three more short stories in collaboration with Inoue which are: - Mimi wo sumaseba (1995) - Hoshi wo katta hi (2006) - Iblard Jikan (2007)
One of my friends just streamed LSD on stream. Ok, that sounds weird but still. I didn't know Sato did other games prior to the mindtrip/grandpa of walking sim games came out.
I Just watched all your videos while working on mine in one day aha Really good channel overall ! Big Grimbeard vibes and I fucking dig it ! (I know you get that a lot, but hey, it's really a compliment imo aha) The mood is perfect, the narration top notch and the jokes are perfectly timed ! Congrats, You won my sub !
I don't know how I ended up finding this channel, but I'm glad I found it. Subbed immediately. Don't know if you're into racing games, but you should defo check out Racing Lagoon as it finally got translated about a year ago. Think Final Fantasy, but the encounters are Need For Speed races.
I'd love for you to talk about DeSPIRIA someday, it is such an interesting psycho-horror game with turn-based rpg elements I heard that it was published by Atlus, but not directly made by them
I recently had my first psychedelic experiences and have to say, LSD was very comforting and wholesome. However, i no longer have ANY interest in mushrooms lol
Man your channel is amazing, I'm so glad youtube recommended your videos to me!! That was a great video and thank you for putting subs, it's really helpful!
I became a patreon member but could only afford the lower tier...so I am putting my name here instead. Have been meaning to play these games for a while. I have listened to Sato's music a lot and own one of his books, Alphabetical Orgasm.
Heya! Discovered your channel recently and I gotta say I'm loving your videos! Have you played the PS1 style survival horror game "Alisa"? It should be right up your alley 😁 it's on steam and will get a multi-console release soon... And yeah, I voice act in the game so kind of a shameless plug but also a genuine recommendation 🙏
I watched all of your vidéos in one night. Very good content. A game i would liké you ton cover is Maken X on thé Dreamcast. There IS a PS2 enhanced port called Maken Shao : démon Sword. It IS a hack n slash made by some of the shin Megami tensei team but flew under the radar.
I highly wanna recommend a few games to you! Lisa and its entire series, especially Lisa: The Painful is my top suggestion! Earthbound like game with very trippy elements, secrets and a dark but oddly human storyline These next two series are really dark and mature so proceed with caution Fear&hunger and fear&hunger termina, very dark dungeon crawlers with incredibly deep mechanics and many branching paths and ALOT of secrets Wadanohara and the deep blue sea, a cute RPG game with a dark secret and a very lore rich world HYLICS, I really can't even describe this one lol. Just experience it! Corpse party, a long and beloved series of horror games with dark themes and gruesome death scenes Digimon Survive, even if you're not into Digimon it's a pretty good game with lots of lore to explore Haunted PS1, and other PS1 style modern indie games A few more rapid fire: Necerhood Crypt Worlds OFF! Thomas Was Alone
Would you be willing to do a video on Hellnight / Dark Messiah? It was a PS1 survival horror game made by ATLUS (best known for the Persona games) and is probably one of the coolest concepts for a horror game I've ever heard. I'd love to hear your take on it.
Hey bro you seen fear and hunger? Might be a stretch for your channel due to its more recent release but is very atmospheric, graphic, moody, and mysterious rpg.
I really liked Tong-Nou, shame that Chu-Teng isn't as good. Would you consider making a video on Roly-Polys and its sequel, or other lesser-known Sato games?
Hello Mr. Chill, I only have one critique of your wonderful channel; is it possible to turn the bass/volume down in your intro music? It's a bit much imo. Love your work though, been watching a lot of your vids recently.
Kinda interesting how in Tong-Nou, a game all about Buddhist/Chinese alchemy themes, the only way to get a true game over is to become immortal...saying that though giving this game a western release is an utterly baffling decision
This is a comment so you get engagement. I wish you success. please do not change your vibe with increase income. This level of production value is nice.
49 days is the time a “soul” spends in the intermediate period between life and death, according to Buddhism (though Buddhists to not purport the existence of a soul as such)
