In this 2-Gun match, I am competing as a WWI US infantryman, with an M1917 Eddystone rifle and an M1911 pistol (both are genuine WWI-era originals). I am also using a reproduction US 1917 uniform from Mike's Militaria. It's a fantastic quality reproduction, made from the same patterns and materials as the originals, and custom tailored to fit.
Ultimately I placed 50 out of 60 shooters - not bad for shooting against almost exclusively semiauto rifles! The more I shoot the M1917 rifle, the more I like it - although heavy, it is excellent in every other way. The 1911 is an iconic pistol, but does leave something to be desired. The hammer bite left my hand bloody, but it did get the job done.

Northern Italian civilian/infantryman and wears at least two layers of wool over then linnen undergarments, I can confirm that even tho' you're cooking inside and sweating as a pig-you're okey when you get dry. I'm still amazed by the fact that even after a whole day of gambeson and brigandine over the wool and linnen doesnt make you arms, torso and thighs stinky and sweaty. Good thing with 100% wool material is that it's really good insulator (you're warm when it's cold outside and you wont be so cooked during extreme sun) and wicks away the sweet instantly keeping you pretty heated up but dry while linnen undergarments allows your skin to breathe and stay clean

@medvidekmisa
@medvidekmisa 7 лет назад
well in a real war you barely see the enemy so you probably wont even know what and how they are firing at you and will be the last thing you will think about...with bolt action you will also try to aim better just for psychologie reasons instead of spraying bullets randomly with semi auto
@TheGreatBeard
@TheGreatBeard 7 лет назад
spraying bullets randomly also has a psychological effect against the opposing army. With a lot of bullets flying around, they're not as confident in attacking.
@mathm7401

At the ranges the people in this match are shooting at I imagine any accuracy advantages bolts actions carry would be negligible. I'd bet that this is a case of slow being fast, where some people with semi autos are rushing their shots, relying on the ability for quick follow up shots and that is actually costing them more time whereas someone with a bolt action is going to make sure their sights are on target and they get a good trigger break.

Interesting to see him cycle the action with his right hand. I recall the lefty sniper from Saving Private Ryan reaching over with his left to work the bolt, but I don't know if that actor really is a southpaw or if, perhaps, the director wanted a more obvious movement.

+Real Horrorshow. yeah, that's funny, I was thinking about the sniper dude in S.P.R too. I remember the first time I watched that and thinking that his bolt working was a bit clunky beause he was a lefty. He looks awkward reloading in the film and I always thought it was a bad idea to have made that actor (can't remember his name) the sniper in the film beause surely any good sniper, lefty or not would be able to cycle the bolt on his rifle smoothly. In every other way he plays the part amazingly though.

Most early helmets up into the Cold War had two point attachment, which tends to fall like that. I reenact a variety of wwii and Cold War kits, and it’s a pretty universal problem other than the German stahlhelm. Soviet helmets were sized to fit over a cap or ushanka, which solves the issue, and later versions of the m1 and its clones had 3 point attachment. Another problem with all helmets I’ve worn though, is if you wear a pack, going prone and aiming with a rifle, the rim of the helmet tends to butt up against the pack, which pushes the rim over your eyes

I don't have access to any ranges that have action matches, nor a shooting buddy with whom to do run jump stretch crawl fart matches, but on the small private 200M range where I'm able to shoot, I devise little two-or-three-gun period courses and shoot them for time against myself. So far, I've done various iterations of same-caliber 1892 & Blackhawks (I have sets in four calibers), M1 Carbine & 1911, Garand & 1911, iron-sight bolt actions and an M625-8JM with .45 ball in full moons, an M4 and an XD45, the same with an M5, an AR22 and a High Standard M100, and a "resistance fighter" version with a '60s scoped .22 semi-auto rifle and the High Standard M100. Although I dearly love the versions with the .30 Carbine and the Garand, the real hoot comes with the leverguns and revolvers, in .32-20, .357, .44 Magnum and .45 Colt. Having just obtained a Mosin M91/30, I doubt I could find an 1895. I guess I should look for an S&W Model 3.

Very nice Ian. Just a question, if you could carry any hand gun into World War One which one would it be? I'd ask rifle but you seemed on the edge of proposing marriage to that M1917 so I assume that's what it would be lol.

Ian mentioned some WWI era slang coming from the French. Here's another curiosity from back then. The Russians sent men to fight at Verdun and so the Russian army marched in the victory parade down the Champs-Élysées in Paris after the war. It's from those soldiers that the French got the word for a new type of cafe. Bistro. From the Russian word bystro which means something like, "Hey! Hurry up with my order!"
@Murray.Sutherland
@Murray.Sutherland 8 лет назад
That might have been from after the napolonic wars when Paris was occupied. look up beef tartare

You may be right; I have not personally checked the etymology. But my source was Martin Sixsmith, one time BBC correspondent in Moscow, who did his postgraduate studies in St Petersburg and is a fluent Russian speaker. Quoted (roughly) from his book, "Russia, a 1,000 year chronicle of the Wild East", which I am part way through (well worth a read by the way). He was explicit that it came from WWI.

I think he may have been referencing the way the US services have incorporated borrowed French terms like enfilade/defilade/echelon/barrage et al. Then again, I thought that came from the Revolutionary era...

+PleaseDontWatchThese I'm not sure it is a disability. When a right handed person cycles a bolt gun they have to take there trigger hand of the small of the butt. A lefties trigger hand doesn't move. It might be an advantage. It doesn't seam to slow Ian down.

Wait how he said "a lot of the slang that came from ww1, was just a corruption of french" Is that how we got the term "pardon my french". From soldiers using such slang to or near french troops, thus following up with pardon my french.

From concept to execution, I am always impressed by your videos. I'm also impressed that someone made a moving steel target that's even more evil than the Texas Star! You certainly have some speedy bolt manipulation, but have you tried working the bolt with your shooting hand? Maybe pivot the rifle to the left 90 degrees before/as you do it? You might even be able to do left-handed reloads faster/easier that way. Just a thought, feel free to disregard at will. =)

Very nice job Ian. Love the M1917. I was lucky enough to buy one from a friend a few yrs ago. VG condition, not far from pristine, Remington, low 3 digit serial number. Looks like it never went overseas. Often the first few hundred of something on contract are tested for spec and end up bring kept stateside for guardcm duty, training etc. Love the sights, since i pretty much learned on peeps anyway. The trigger is good, and i like a smooth 2 stage anyway. It is a bit heavy, but of course that helps with stability (to a point) and with recoil. I'll take an updated 1911 thanks, or at least one with a decent beavertail. Good job with that one. Great finish on the spinner, esp since u cleared it with 1 mag after losing most of the momentum. Great video as always. Thank you
