2 in 1 Umbrellas 

Both bounce and shoot through umbrellas spread light, but in truth a shoot through is not as directional as a bounce. This is opposite of what you said in the video. With a shoot through you get spill in all directions, to include backward. But with a bounce you can actually use the edge of the umbrella to dictate where the light will not go (or not as much). What the biggest difference between them is though, is the quality of light. Bounce umbrellas tend to be a harsher light, causing more dramatic shadows. A shoot through tends to give a more soft light (closer to that of a soft box, but not as soft). You also tend to use the two differently. With the bounce, you aim it where you want the light to go. With the shoot through, it is best to NOT aim it where you want the light to go, but aim it past (or in front of) where you want it lit. That way you are using the edge of the umbrella's light and not the hot spot in the center. If a photographer wants a shoot through, I suggest buying one. Then for the bounce, you can use a convertible (as the video shows), but I don't recommend buying just a convertible if you want BOTH. The reason I suggest having both if you want both, is that first of all, time is money. It takes time to remove the backing of the convertible. And it takes MORE time putting it back on than it took taking it off. The second reason is that umbrellas tend to be so affordable that it really doesn't make sense NOT to have one of each type (per light that you have). You can then swap back and forth with ease and speed. And they take up virtually no space (if you have space in your gear bag for one, you will probably have space for two), so get both. I am NOT saying not to buy this product. I am suggesting that you buy it as a "spare" shoot through if you ruin your standard shoot through, or as a white bounce umbrella; but you don't use it truly for double duty.

I use about 3 speed lights with my 60" umbrellas all the time *shrugs* I could use 2 if I wanted but have more peace of mind with 3.
