I'm 70 and been a browns fan since 1957. back then we were a great football team. jim brown made that team go. yeah they had weapons on offense. an offense led by the goat. I was sad when he left the nfl. my idol then and still today. actually got in fist fights cause I was a white guy and racism was real then. met him once in vegas and was awe struck. got his autograph and still have it. will cherish it forever. go browns

Still waiting to see his equal, and no longer think I ever will. And you're right; racism was real in those days. And the pendulum swings...

Tom Hall Yes. The guy I know who played with JB, and saw Unitas play first hand many times, said that we need to remember that Unitas was getting hit all the time, before rules to protect QB. He said that Unitas would get smashed, and the next play throw a 70 yard bomb for a TD. Also much harder for receivers to get open in those days. He said his quick release was crazy! I believe what this man says. He was receiver on 1964 Browns NFL championship team. BTW-He also believes that the best overall teams were the Packers under Lombardi. He said those teams were almost perfect, and he believed that if you took steroids out of the equation, could beat any team today. He said a Lombardi training camp was unbelievably brutal.

It pisses me off hearing Jim Brown announced as number 2 to Jerry Rice. It's impressive how long and consistent Jerry's career was, but a lot of receivers could have put up those 49er seasons... Whoever they chose to play WR1 was going to average 1200-1500 yards per season with the Walsh system, Montana/Young and those pre-salary cap era all-star rosters. Rice was an excellent player who deserves to be high on this list, but I think people are blinded by his number totals. It's uncontroversial to go with the stats, but when you look at their context, no way was he as dominant a player as Jim Brown or Lawrence Taylor.

He is the reason why RBs are so great today. He inspired people like Walter Payton, Eric Dickerson, Marcus Allen, etc. Then they inspired people like Barry Sanders, Curtis Martin, Marshall Faulk, etc. The they inspired people like Adrian Peterson, Jaamal Charles, etc. Its just how dominante he was. Without him, the game would be different. Big power backs were never thought to be fast, and fast runners were never thought to be strong. It was one or the other. Bronko and Jim revolutionized the game of american football. I salute you Jim Brown, and wish you the best.

Love your dedication to stats, but only one "small" detail needs tweaking... In the first four years of his career, the NFL season was only 12 games, then it changed to 14 games. Other than that, you're SPOT ON dude. Took Payton more years, with more games per year to eclipse his totals. Sanders averaged 99.8 yds/gm in career, Walter averaged 88.03 yds/gm in career...Jim "GOAT" Brown averaged 129.76 yds/gm in career. 'Nuff said!

He should be #1 because of the gap between his level of performance and whoever comes next. There is nothing that can be said which would take the amazement away you see in his films. The one thing which is always there is the combination of power(especially leg and back) and a sense of balance that can't be taught. He's got 5 or 6 guys around him after breaking a tackle, and he's doing a little dance to create a diversion which he turns into the path of least resistance. A WR can find a way to get open and make difficult catches, but Jim Brown was making music on the spot. After retirement, he stood tall for civil rights, proved himself as an actor, worked extensively with troubled youth, and did one other thing I give him even more respect for. When UFC had their first big televised championship, Brown was a commentator for the first 2 or 3 events. He called the Gracie/Shamrock contest on the first one, and these were fights for the purist with clean holds and respect between the competitors. It wasn't long before the blood and violence factor picked up. That's not what Jim Brown signed up for, and he left in disgust. The 2000 plus people who posted before me already knew of his talent. I wanted the other things to be known for those who didn't. Genuine class that you show from the start and never deviate from is as rare as his skill on the field. God bless you, Mr. Brown.

LMFAO. I'm reading these comments and even though I never saw Jim Brown play, I can without hesitation say that he's the greatest offensive football player of all time. He's still the standard call running backs are judged by. For the guys who say Walter Payton was better (he was a more complete back no question), it took Payton 10+ years in a 16 game schedule to surpass what Brown did in a 9 year, 14 game schedule. It wasn't like Brown was 225 and everyone else was at 175.(lbs of course). I get the fact the there weren't the athletes of today's game but the NFL was exceedingly more violent in Brown's heyday. His contributions to the Civil rights movement and even today with his anti gang violence organization further solidified his place as the GOAT.

In nine seasons: 9× Pro Bowl (1957-1965) 8× First-team All-Pro (1957-1961, 1963-1965) 3× AP NFL Most Valuable Player (1957, 1958, 1965) NFL Rookie of the Year (1957) 8× NFL rushing yards leader (1957-1961, 1963-1965) 5× NFL rushing touchdowns leader (1957-1959, 1963, 1965) NFL 1960's All-Decade Team NFL 75th Anniversary All-Time Team... Anyone who is a real fan of the NFL will know over the last 50 years plus there has been Jim Brown, and then everybody else...Having watched the NFL since the early 60's, many many great players come to mind, Walter, Barry, Jerry, Reggie, Taylor, etc. All great players for sure, but Jim Brown for me is the greatest player in the NFL...

JIM BROWN PLAYED IN A CLOSED LEAGUE TO NEARLY ONLY WHITE, MOST PART TIME FARMERS, HOBBY, TRYING TO MAKE A COUPLE EXTRA BUCKS, SOMEONE THAT KNEW SOMEONE OR THE OWNER TO GET A POSITION, AT A TIME WHERE GETTING HURT WAS MUCH HIGHER WITH 0 GUARANTEE OF NOT ONLY A TEAM MIGHT GO BANKRUPT OR PAY THE MENS SALARY A WEEK OR TWO LATE OR BE INJURED THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, WITH NO DRAFT SYSTEM LIKE TODAY, WITH MOST WHITES HAVING A MUCH HIGHER CHANCE OF GETTING A GOOD JOB WITH THEIR DAD'S AT A STEEL MILL OR G.M SO THE TALENT OF EVEN THE CLOSED LEAGUE OF WHITES STILL WATERED DOWN EVEN FURTHER BECAUSE TO RISKY PLAYING IN THE NFL, THAT AT A TIME WHERE COLOR OF SKIN WAS OVER LOOKED FOR TALENT, WHERE BLACK MEN COULDN'T VOTE IN ALL STATES, USE THE SAME RESTROOMS,. THE LEAGUE FAVORED A BLACK MALE JIM BROWN IN A MOSTLY WHITE LEAGUE OF MUCHER SMALLER MEN, FAR FROM THE BEST POOL OF TALENT EVEN FROM THE WHITES, NOT NEARLY AS PROFESSIONAL AS TODAY, PLAYING ON LITERALLY THE BEST TEAM BY FAR AT THE TIME WITH NEARLY ALL RUNNING BACKS THAT PLAYED ON THE BROWNS RIGHT BEFORE DURING AND AFTER JIM BROWN MOSTLY ALL AVERAGED 5 YARDS A CARRY AND SOME EVEN AVERAGING 6 WHERE JIM BROWN AVERAGED ALMOST 5 AND A HALF! WOW. HE WAS SO AMAZING PLAYING THE EQUIVALENCY OF NEARLY A HIGH SCHOOL TEAM OF PLAYERS. WOW. HE PLAYED SO GREAT IN LITERALLY A NEARLY CLOSED LEAGUE OF WHITES, WATERED WAYYYYYY DOWN!! WOW. THE WHITES COULD SAY SCREW THIS I'LL GET A JOB DOING SOMETHING ELSE... JIMMY BROWN COULDN'T CAUSE HE WAS BLACK SO HE HAD EVERYTHING TO GAIN!!!

It's important to remember that football in the 1960s was all about the run. Normalizing the stats to a modern era proves just how valuable he was.

Imagine what he’d do today given everything NFL players are given, equipment, training, medication, nutrition, etc. you’d have to rewrite the record book just as they had to do back in the 1960s with him. In a sense he was the Wilt Chamberlain of the NFL

Great commentary and background from Burt Reynolds! I'm in Canada and was born in 1961 which meant I never had the privilege of seeing Jim play. Over the years I am completely amazed at the footage from his career. I respect Jim for walking away from football at age 29. So often in pro sports these decisions can be made by owners GM's,coaches and team doctors. Jim went out on his own terms where those who work in regular jobs don't have that opportunity. Thanks for sharing.

The Most Inspirational Video of the Top 100. If the NFL re releases this for the 100 year anniversary they shouldn't change this video one bit. I'm not a fan of actors or most entertainers but the way Burt talks about Jim and the music at the end. It's when you know Jim's career is the definition of mythical status. That's an inspiration for any of us in life.

I'm 63 and I never saw Jim play. But my old man rip was a Baltmore Colts fanatic in the 50s-70s. The first time he saw him play in Baltimore he had to see this guy up close. He was making fools out of Gino Marchetti and Art Donovan. So he goes to the visiting team locker room door and waits for the team to head for the bus. He's like the only person there and when Jim walks out he says great game Jim. He walks over and says thanks you must be from Cleveland. My dad says no I'm a Colts fan but I have never seen a back run like you even Lenny Moore doesn't. Jim smiles and says I was a better lacrosse player lol.
