END EDIT
In this video, Part 2 in a series, I’m showing the parts needed to upgrade your Mercruiser Thunderbolt ignition system to a Delco EST ignition system. See Part 1 for why you will eventually have to do this. You can buy the parts separately or as part of a kit. I bought two new parts but already had the harnesses in stock from my former mechanic work.
I had concerns that the distributor was actually a true marine distributor but after an internet search I did finally determine that it was a marine distributor. That’s very important because you need a marine ignition module with marine timing curves or you run the risk of destroying your engine. Here is a link that convinced me this was a marine distributor:

Before watching this video you may want to watch a video I did on marine ignition systems about 5 months ago where I discuss how the timing tool works with a Delco EST ignition system using a Volvo Penta Timing shunt tool as it’s called. Here is a link to that video:

You're missing the Most important thing that makes a Marine Distributor a Coast Guard approved Marine Distributor: the little spark suppression screens on the baseplate that keep the boat from going boom if there's a gas leak.

They’re not missing. They are there. It’s a marine distributor. What makes you think it’s not.

@@moccasinmarine I didn't say that it wasn't / that the screens were missing, I was pointing out that you neglected to mention the single most important thing that differentiates a marine distributor from an automotive one; same goes for the alternator, fuel pump and carburetor - there's lots of people who aren't aware that there's actually valid differences in some "marine" parts.

Man I just put my motor back in from being rebuilt. And I was on the water running and it just shut down. I check to see if I was getting any spark. And nothing. I check the coil pack and it tested good. I was getting power from the distributor. I think my module is bad.
@moccasinmarine
@moccasinmarine 2 года назад
The pickup inside the distributor is a fragile part. It’s a coil of wire that when heated expands and sometimes the coil shorts internally and you lose the signal. The module has better quality control when it’s made so I would lean towards the pickup coil.

Hi I asked this a few months back and you were gonna get beck to me but you must have got busy and forgot. I cannot get into base timing mode with my 96 4.3LX Mercruiser with the thunderbolt ignition. I ground the purple/white wire directly to the battery before I start the engine but it makes no difference in timing with or without. Also it still advances when I rev the engine. Boat is new to me and engine is new, previous owner froze the block. I have this one running pretty good by ear but I cannot do final adjustments. I also notice my tach doesn't work.(bad module maybe?) Replacing parts is expensive and you seem to be one of the most knowledgeable youtubers on the subject. Do you have any advice?

From your other comment it would appear that you have decided to upgrade to the Delco EST ignition so your issues with the Thunderbolt ignition will go away.

Does this work on reverse rotation mercruiser 7.4 engines ?
@moccasinmarine
@moccasinmarine 9 месяцев назад
Yes, all that matters is the gear on the distributor shaft and the order in which you place the spark plug wires on the distributor cap. You might have to send me your old distributor to see if I can swap the gear onto a new distributor shaft. There might be new distributor’s out there with the right gear but I doubt if they would be DELCO EST compatible.

I'm an automotive tech and trying to dumb the system down due to no spark on me 97 welcraft 4.3. Assuming good distributor and coil and wiring to each other, I can ground dist and coil together, send voltage to coil leave tach unplugged and spin the dist to create spark, right? I'm must be missing something because I'm loosing spark. If you agree then one of my known good parts must actually be bad
@moccasinmarine
@moccasinmarine Год назад
You’ve left out too much information. What ignition system are you trying to test? If you ground the coil it will never fire and will overheat.

The Marina installed the new ignition control module, now all the audible alarms are going off after the boat starts running for 5 seconds. Any thoughts?

Hello, I have question: In the first minute of this video you say it can't be a car - it just has to be a marine. You say modules have different functions, can you write something more? I am asking because I can buy a car module much cheaper than a module for a boat - by practically half the price.
@moccasinmarine
@moccasinmarine Год назад
Marine modules have gradually advancing timing curves. I say curves because the module has a unique curve for each size engine. If you watch this whole series I discuss this in much greater detail. Car and truck modules don’t have timing curves. They have a fixed advance that kicks in around 1500-2000 rpm. The ones I’m familiar with have about 13 degrees of fixed added timing. While you could in a pinch use the car module in a boat and adjust the base timing so that the total is correct at speed I would not chance it. The proper module is Delco D1965A and is not that expensive if you shop around. DO NOT USE THE CHEAP $20 EBAY MODULES.

The link to the distributor says the part is obsolete, I have the same distributor from a truck. Can I just purchase a marine module for the automotive distributor?
@moccasinmarine
@moccasinmarine 2 года назад
As a marine mechanic I would be opening myself up to too much liability to use a truck distributor but what you do with your boat is up to you.

hello, I have this set up would having the constant power set to just the purple wire cause a stall, or do any ideas on why when I connect the tach it's having stall issues.
@moccasinmarine
@moccasinmarine 2 года назад
If it only stalls when you connect a tachometer the tachometer is bad. If stalls randomly otherwise you may have to replace one of the three ignition system items, ignition coil, ignition module, or the pickup coil inside the distributor. These are the only electronic components that would be likely to fail. I just recently had to replace a brand new distributor because the pickup coil failed randomly. Random failures are very hard to figure out. I replaced the module first, then the ignition coil, and finally the distributor until I solved the problem.

Is there any posibility alternator fead power to ignition coil directly? How worked those old ac magnetos how not to get shocked via boddy ground and how prevent baterry from discharge? Any one has ideas how that might work? I was also wondering I do have E core type ignition coil wuld the 4 pin gm ignition module still work if AC is used ?

I’m not understanding what you are asking. I don’t have experience with racing magnetos so I can’t answer questions related to that.

Does this setup have a built in timing advance? I just installed the setup out of a 1994 Chevy pickup truck but I don't know if there is any way to make the advance work without an ECM.

Please view part 6 for the answer to your question but I suggest you watch all videos in this series for a full understanding. Truck and car modules are not compatible with marine applications. The timing curve is wrong.

Hello, I have an Mercruiser 7.4 with Thunderbolt IV ignition module. The module is dead and I've had a Hard time finding replacement. A friend suggested that I convert the whole ignition system to a Sierra conversion kit 185480. I just ordered One, but I noticed that it doesnt have any ignition module. Do you know if it is integrated or should I buy it seperately?
@moccasinmarine
@moccasinmarine 3 года назад
I would return the 18-5480 kit. It is a Pertronix based kit and the timing advance is mechanical weights inside the distributor. The Pertronix igniter (module) is inside the distributor cap and fires the coil but it does not have timing advance capability. The GM Delco EST kit below does the advance electronically so there are no moving parts to maintain or wear out. I recommend a GM Delco EST system. Go to this link ( marineenginedepot.com ) and get part number 481111. Watch all videos in this playlist ( ru-vid.com/group/PL6wJJenh5G94kH1RfBCMYAdMAlD4ZJyhn ) for instructions on how to install part 481111 and then use the 5.0 timing curve and you are all set. I’ve covered this before in the last 4 comments of this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-x_UXSsOnepk.html

good morning, Great companies! My problem is that after installing this new module and accelerating, the ignition starts to lag rather than accelerate. What could be the problem?
@moccasinmarine
@moccasinmarine Год назад
Sometimes the inductive pickup coil in the distributor is wound wrong. It’s in the middle of the distributor and can only be removed by taking the gear off and pulling out the shaft. You can try reversing the white and green wires where they connect on the module first, but I would replace it as it’s a manufacturing defect.
@po-odrze_pl7122
@po-odrze_pl7122 Год назад
@@moccasinmarine Thank you very much - your advice helped me. Swapping the cables (green, white) did not help - the engine started to go crazy. I replaced the pickup coil and it works! Eventually, it started to overtake, not backfire. Now another problem has arisen; D. At 600 rpm = 8, at 1000 rpm = 9, at 1500 rpm = 16.5, at 2000 rpm = 16.5 angles. In my opinion, at 2000 rmp - the angle should already be 25.5. Could this mean that the module is still damaged?
@moccasinmarine
@moccasinmarine Год назад
@@po-odrze_pl7122 you never said what size engine you are working on? Also anytime you change the module or pickup wiring you have to re adjust the ignition timing since the pickup is technically what you are timing when you rotate the distributor. It’s also important that you put the gear back on in the same orientation. In other words don’t install the gear 180 degrees out from how you found it.
@moccasinmarine
@moccasinmarine Год назад
Based on the curve data you’ve sent me that module does not appear to be a marine part. I’d need the manufacturer and part number to check.

@@moccasinmarine I have a 1996 engine. Mercruiser 5.7 V8 - originally it was with Thunderbolt 5, angle of advance 8. I borrowed a Thudderbolt IV module from another boat and the boat works very well, but I have to give TB IV back. So I bought on amazon "A-Team Performance - EST Marine Electronic Ignition Distributor V8 5.0 5.7 7.4 18-5484-1 18-5514 3857449 - Compatible with Mercruiser EFI Chevy Chevrolet Volvo Penta OMC" with cables, coil, candles.

@moccasinmarine I am not getting 12 volts to the positive side of my coil. If I run a jumper wire from positive side of battery to positive side of the coil the boat fires right up and stays running after I pull the jumper wire off. Does this sound like my ignition module has shit out? Thanks for your help people that know this system are very few and far between.
