In this video I discuss more info on Delco EST Marine Ignition Modules and specifically how to use them on just about any engine.
Correction: At the 11:10 mark I mention that Mercruiser V8 engines use 10 degrees as the base timing setting. Actually most of the V8 engines I’ve worked on use 8 degrees as the base timing setting. Adding 8 degrees to the 22 degrees from the chart gives 30 degrees total timing which matches the total timing of the 5.7 Delco EST curve. That means you would just use 12 degrees as your initial timing setting straight from the chart.
For a detailed understanding of how the timing tool works I’ll refer you to another video I did a couple years ago.

Is there a difference between 19418839 and 19179578. When I google Both seem to have the same D1965A number

I believe from your videos that I need to set my pre-Vortex (circa 1990 and Thunderbolt IV) Merc 4.3 V6 at 2 Deg After TDC (ie slightly retarded) using the timing harness. Trying to think this through - If I had the normal running harness plugged into the EST Distributor and used a timing light gun that also shows the advance angle (and rpm), should I be able to check that the new Delco EST module was providing the correct required Total Spark Advance, as required by the 4.3 V6 engine (which I believe from the original mecrusier Engine Distributor Advance Curve specs you show) to be 22 Deg BTC at 2500rpm)? If so, and if I were able to run the engine at 2500rpm, and set the timing light angle to 25 Deg advanced (ie the EST Delco's max Ign advance), should I see the Pully Timing Mark at 0 deg (TDC) or would I have to set the timing gun to 22 deg BTC (ie the original engine required Total Spark Advance) to see TDC on the pulley with the strobe light? Confused, as I put the boat on the water briefly after doing the Delco EST Ignition system upgrade and aborted it very quickly, as the engine appeared to be missing (sounded like blow back through the carb) when put under any load (didnt do this running on land with muffs), so going back to the drawing board! Any input/advice much appreciated.

I cover your engine in this video at the 12:16 mark. The result is you set your timing at 2 ATDC so you did arrive at the correct setting. From the symptoms you describe you bought a defective module when you bought the SIERRA kit instead of a genuine GM based kit. If you have a digital timing light you would set it for 22 degrees and at 2500 rpm the moving timing mark should line up at zero.

You need to confirm that the timing is advancing to the right value at full throttle and that it will be reliable on the water and not stall out on you. You must not have read that I only recommend genuine GM modules. I had numerous problems with aftermarket modules, even expensive ones.
