I'm beside myself! Is training a Bernese Mt Dog pup always this easy? The little guy learns to walk on a leash, climb up and down stairs and overcomes his fear of the vacuum in just a weekend.

I am not an expert, but at 63, I have had dogs all my life, from large working dogs over 100lbs to fluffbeasts around 10lbs. I like that you are using your instincts and paying attention to his feedback, which IMO is why you are making such good progress. He wants to please and clearly already bonded with you. All that desensitizing with the vacuum is very smart. Whatever is part of his daily routine becomes 'must be Tuesday' for him. There are fewer hard and fast 'rules' than just communicating what you want from him. For what is worth, I think you are doing great.

Hi Ryan! I think you are doing a fabulous job with your boy! One thing I noticed you didn't address him by his name too much on the video. I suggest when you are walking him on the leash, or if whenever he is a little distance away and you call him by saying his name and he comes reward him at first with treats and praise eventually working to just praise when he comes to you calling his name. Teach him to sit, before you put his leash on and to sit when you take it off- it makes life easier for both of you when you arent trying to handle a moving target. You are already doing such a great Job, its apparent how much Kyper loves and trusts you! Thank you for sharing your adventures we look forward to seeing you each week! ❤

If you haven't already, try putting one of your dirty t-shirts or sweatshirts so they have a ton of your scent on it and leave it in there. Should work to calm him and helps bond him to you. Not that he already isn't but, it helps.

Morning Rayn there is no right or wrong way to teach your puppy most important thing is lots of love and kindness and he is getting plenty of that and always tell he no when he does something you don't want he to do and always praise he when he dose something you want him to do ❤
@leannkennedy6568
@leannkennedy6568 Месяц назад
Praise, praise, praise and using a specific command will have him so loyal and obedient that he'll rarely leave your side. Also, whenever he does something that you'll train him in the future, such as sit, say the word sit. He'll associate the word and his action in no time. My dog is trained with both hand signal and words. For instance, I'll snap my fingers and say the word sit at the same time. You do what you do. This is what worked for me. One more idea. The use of praise as a reward means he'll always come to you and respond when you dont have treats. You always carry affection and attention with you. I had a border collie puppy during christmas. She accidentally bumped into some crotal bells I had hanging on the door knob. Every time she nudged the bells i said the words do you want to go "outdoors, outside, or potty" and let her out with a lot of praise and repetitive words. She nudged those bells all the time in the first few days. After two days, she was potty trained.

Hi Ryan, you’re certainly doin good with the training so far, so well done for that. I appreciate he’s still very young but try using his name instead of the sucky sound as the sooner he learns that the better. Also maybe decide which side you want him sitting / lying and walking beside you when you take him into town and start training him to go to that side - just have the food / treats in the opposite hand and call him by his name. Place your hand with the food in the centre of your body (just under your knees when your feet are together) so he sees and smells it. When he’s about a foot away move that hand with the food around your body at his head height, so he can still see and smell the food, then transfer the food quickly over to your other hand and when he follows the food to the side you want him at you either say his name and sit or just say sit. Turn your hand so the palm is facing back (thumb nearest your body) and feed him the food like that. Make sure to say his name and sit or just sit BEFORE giving him the food, but make one immediately after the other. By turning your hand to face down and backwards you are introducing him to hand commands - so backwards and down means ‘stop’ when he’s walking beside you. If he’s sitting or lying a few paces away from you and you want him to get up you would have your hand facing towards him and upwards and moving your hand at the wrist you’d make an upwards gesture. By bending your arm at the elbow with your hand and fingers rigid you can motion him to come to you. I’ve always taught my dogs hand commands as it’s not always possible to shout say or commands especially in public. You essentially want the dog to be TOTALLY focussed on you 100% of the time. These are all taught separately just as you are doing with some gentle encouragement using the long leash so he doesn’t get distracted and run off on you mid sentence and of course use the small treats / food to compliment his normal food intake or he’ll be a tank in no time. Take the long leash off once he follows you and obeys commands every time. If he continues to whimper when the door of his cage is closed try lying beside it so he can smell you close by or as others say stick an old T shirt that you have worn a couple of days in his cage ( I say cage not crate) and he’ll get your scent. If that helps stop the noise slowly over time move away until he completely stops. In a few weeks try doing that when the door is left unlocked then after that leave it open when he’s staying in it of his own volition. Again it’s not imperative but the cage should be somewhere he feels safe and comfortable and I guess he should want to go there every time you open the door to the cabin - maybe get his ‘bigger’ house built before too long ! Lots more where that came from but to be honest he appears to be a very intelligent dog. All the best to you both from a very hot and sunny Northern Ireland. And I forgot to mention as others have that once trained he is weened off the food / treats or he won’t be able to climb those steps.

You're doing an awesome job training him. Just know that you don't always need to use food. Dogs love the sound of their human's voice, and when you're telling him he's done a good job he appreciates that more than food. The only other thing is to be consistent, and especially at this age, repetition is key.

Awesome work Ryan! For one of your upcoming projects, you might want to consider adding a riser to each of your cabin treads…. On the steps. When our pups get excited and run to the stairs, their legs can slide through that open space. Having a riser will ensure no unnecessary twisted legs or broken bones. Best of luck with your new partner!

Adding this comment for my 81 year old husband, he is not very tech savvy. Before you cut a hole in the side of the cabin, how are you going to keep the cold out? I suggest under the porch or the cabin. Dig down a little, put a full log floor and walls. Put the opening in the lower outside corner, fill it with hay, not straw. Our weather comes from the S.W . Let the dog grow up before you put him outside. There a bunch of animals around up there that will frighten him before he grows up. At Night he will learn to chase deer. Suggest you tie him at night. By the way you have a cute pup.

I crate trained my dog for night time sleeping the lazy way - I let her cuddle with me on the couch and let her get nice and warm and sleepy. Around 9pm I carried her to her crate put her in, closed the door and cover the crate with a blanket. It was so much easier than putting her in the crate when she was wide awake and listen to the crying. I was willing to carry her to bed forever as she’d go right to sleep in the crate. But after doing this for 6 months or so, when I move to get up to carry her to bed, she wakes up, runs to her crate and I follow along to close the door and toss a blanket over it. If it’s going to be cold, I will cover her with a blanket or two before I head to bed - she will lift her head up when I open the crate door but will snuggle down when she sees the blanket so I can cover all of her. In the morning I will open the crate door and give her a pet or two and let her come out at her own speed - sometime she’ll sleep form another 20 minutes- I like that she doesn’t bolt out of the door as soon as it is open I have found crib blanket for babies at the dollar store to be a great size for a dog crate and they are inexpensive too

I have a 8 month old chow puppy he's never cried like that and he's never been in puppy jail. he sleeps on the floor beside my bed and all i gave him since he was 7 weeks old is his own fluffy blanket to sleep on. he fussed a few times i just let him know i was there by petting him over the side of the bed a couple of times. Now when he wants out to potty in the morning he jumps up with his paws on the side of the bed and nudges me. I get up and out he goes. He's super smart. He's a puppy tho and yesterday he got the plug someone left on the wrong side of the tub and chewed few holes in it. lol... He gave it to me when i asked for it back. I went got him a fresh soup bone from the frig as a trade. Made him Happy, he got something better to chew on. best way to train a puppy is just enjoy and love'm if you wanted a robot you would have just bought a wind up toy. He will learn more by fallowing you around. He's already telling you you're his best friend.

One thing at a time! They will get things faster! We use “here”, to get him to come to me, down to lay down, off to get off of things, quiet to stop barking or whining, along with the normal one. We are doing service dog training. So it’s tiring! To get him to go in his crate try using an old t-shirt of yours that you have warn all day. It makes them more comfortable.

The only two things I would cutdown on is letting him up on you and carrying him. Unless you start cutting back now, it's going confuse him. If you think about it, adult dogs don't pick up puppies or carry them after the first couple weeks. And he's going to get too big. And fall, winter, and spring, he's going to be too wet. The one thing I would add is I would come up with a carpet or something for him to sit on when you drive the quad around. Make it so it can be in from of you and make it secure, so it doesn't shift. Later, you can use pieces of it for a rear perch and a wagon perch. He'll learn that is where he needs to be when riding. And, as a puppy, not having secure footing is a big fear. Carpet will give grip, a texture, and a smell, that says "I sit here and we go places". Routine. Besides being mean, aggressive, or negligent, there is no wrong way to raise a puppy. Socialization would be a good thing, but, unless Tito gets a dog, I can see that being difficult.

Ryan what type of tick and insert pellets do you put around? Are they safe for pets? How often? How much do you spread and what type of spray does Sarah put on her dog? Once a day or how often if they are there for a week? Also what type of bug smoker?
