Until circa 1950, a ship's castle was in the middle. That was not incidental, as the steam engines common at the time were massive, and needed to be located in the middle of the ship, for better balance. Then, as the ships grew larger the castle was moved aft, for better cargo capacity and to minimize the length of the propeller shaft. Finally, the castle has been moved forward and the engines to the back. New electronic surveillance and monitoring systems removed the need for the crew to be near the engine, forward visibility is better, and safety is better too, because if something catastrophic happens in the engine room the crew has better chances to escape. As a bonus, a raised bow can take on huge incoming waves, making the ship more capable of withstanding major storms. I think this is the future of ship architecture.

Rather unusual to see a brand new container ship7:10with the old fashioned superstructure 3/4 aft configuration. But at 74000 tons, she's fairly small by modern day standards 😛
