With only 5 days of boating experience we attempt to motor our catamaran 1,000 miles down the ICW from Virginia to Florida. We only have a 15hp tiller motor, battery-powered lights, gutted interior, and no heat. It's the middle of winter but we are going anyhow!

@Us3rX100 I'm starting to think that its a scam to be honest, their clothing and gear are worth more than the boat they are on. Smells of attention seeking.

When all three lights I see ahead I turn to starboard show my red. Green to green, red to red perfect safety go ahead. If upon my port is seen a steamers starboard light of green, there's naught for me to do but see that green to port keeps clear of me. But if to starboard red appear it is my duty to keep clear, to act as judgement says is proper ,port or starboard, back or stop her. Both in safety and in doubt always keep a good lookout. In danger with no room to turn ease her, stop her, go astern. I learned this little poem 45 years ago, these are the basic rules of the road for navigating. Commit them to memory and they will stand you in good stead as you begin your maritime career.

gary dumoulin that’s just how it goes. Well said. I work offshore in the gulf of Maine to east of cape cod and almost 90% of the time a problem that always happens is sailing vessels that have very little navigation lights at night hard to see until your right on top of them . Without radar and AIS I surly would run them over.

The same the world over - well, the tiny little English-speaking bit anyway. My dad and uncle were both at sea in the 1930s and till the day they died could recite those same aides memoire. We would walk around Cardiff docks when they were in their 70s and they'd bounce the rhymes off each other, still word perfect and still making perfect sense. The complexity of knowledge a seaman has always had to attain, even way back in Columbus and Mary Rose days, was phenomenal. The academics who became ships officers were, and still are, very highly skilled people with immense knowledge, and nowadays also a great knowledge of marine IT and marine electronics, as well as international maritime law, meteorology and many other fields.

So, I follow maybe 2-3 other couples that have taken their fixer-up sailboats from fiberglass to finished and now they are out there traveling the world...and I stumble across the both of you attempting the same plan. The only difference is...you guys don't even wait til the paint is dry before you hit the road so to speak. Now I'm hooked I have to watch each week to see if you make it safely (that is my hope by the way). Keep going!!! You will make it!! Fun fact - I noticed at the end of this episode when you showed the map, you traveled right through the town where I was born - Portsmouth, Va. (Father was stationed in Norfolk Naval base at that time.

@JayMaKinGwaVez 4 года назад
You guys are great, the sea foam is excellent but like others have said you've got to get those spark plugs and fuel filter changed especially if you went through the trouble of getting an oil filter wrench. For everything you replace on the boat get 2 or 3 more and keep on hand. Remember you've only got one motor and it's your lifeline.

You crazy kids..we can't but love you, and root for you to make it safely. Use red lights at night, it doesn't take your vision away in case you need to see out-use that if you ever have to move in dark. Also look for some '50 LED solar lights' that come w/a small solar panel, and won't eat batteries, little panel can be mounted anywhere, and has a switch under it, that let's you chose "auto-on at dark" or manual control. Have seen them as low as 10-12 bucks.
