When OSU came into the "Big 7" in 1957 it messed up the conference schedule, so this was part of the conference's plan on how to reconcile scheduling. OU also played at Iowa State in 86 and 87, and OSU came to Norman both years.
I wanted to hate Oklahoma SO much, but I just couldn't help but have respect for that wishbone and swagger. Good luck to the Land Thieves except when we roll into Norman this fall.
I was rooming with two guys at the time, one was a huge Nebraska fan and had been running his mouth all year about how OU wasn't that good, didn't deserve to be #1, blah blah blah and when Collins tore off that long TD run my jackass roommate got up and left the house as I laughed him out the door. Great times
Greatest rivalry in College Football.......the 70's were Dominated by the Sooners......the 80's an even split.....and the Huskers Dominated in the 90's. Will miss this rivalry between the 2 big Reds.
Arrow J Smith. 73 ? NOTRE DAME won it. they beat The Gumps 24 --23. 78 ? Should not have been given the NC. USC rolled the Gumps behind Charles White. only 79 U Teabagger.
ArrowJ Smith In 1973, the Tide lost the bowl game to Notre Dame. Before that, the UPI (the coach’s poll) awarded their national title before the bowl game. Alabama’s loss that year persuaded the UPI to begin awarding the National Titles after the bowl game. In the AP Poll, which was taken after the bowl games, Alabama was #4. Also, if you look back, 4 or 5 of Alabama’s National Titles were fake because they were awarded before the bowl games, and Alabama would lose the bowl games. You can’t lose the bowl game and call yourself National Champs. For instance, Alabama also claims a National Title in 1964, but they lost the bowl game. The fake 1964 National Title that the Tide claims was one of the reasons the AP switched to awarding the National Titles after bowl season beginning in 1968. So 2 Alabama fake National Titles was the reason the major polls switched the timing of their voting.
@@arrowjsmith153 I don't know about that. The Alabama-Auburn rivalry isn't that competitive is it? I mean, OU and Nebraska's rivalry has been dead for a long time anyway, but when it was rolling it seems better than Alabama-Auburn because Alabama usually wins big and most of the time, but I haven't paid that close attention.
I miss the wishbone and option offenses. Everybody runs the spread today: empty backfield, QB in the shotgun...yawn. I also miss this rivalry. Nebraska should be in the Big 12
I could watch the old wishbone footage all day.....great memories...ths game especially, after the freaking media pissed on OU and got us knocked down to # 2 because we "didnt deserve" to be #1 and then we go to Lincoln and beat down Nebraska.
They asked Barry Switzer one time why they kept beating Nebraska. His answer? "I have better players." They were pretty evenly matched, so sometimes it is just that simple.
@Mr420woo If your memory only goes back to the 90's then you don't know what you missed out on. I was at the Game of the Century on Thanksgiving Day 1971 (NU 35 OU 31)....I was there in 75 when OU whupped #2 NU 35-10 and I was there 2 years later in 77 when OU whupped NU 38-7. The 1971 game and the 1987 game are my two favorites.
yeah. Switzer had issues, but his teams were damned good. Tip of the cap! It rang in your ears for days after NU would play them. His O and D lines were so strong.
Finally got past ou in late 80s only to run into an emerging Colorado team in 89, an 90! Then the conference was theirs in the 90s! 0-3 vs FSU in the 90s though if you count the 89-90 fiesta bowl played Jan 1st 1990! Go Noles baby!
He was. Nebraska won 103 games in the 1980s. LaVell Edwards of BYU was second, with 102 wins. Paterno and Schembechler each won 89, and Bobby Bowden won 87. None of the other guys you think of as top coaches in the '80s--Switzer, Pat Dye, Danny Ford, Jimmy Johnson or Vince Dooley--coached the entire decade.
@@CoreyT127 True, playing in the big 8 will get you that stat but when it came time to win a NC, or put themselves in a position to play for it, Osborne validated how sorry the conference was with a frequent FU.
boneman222 really doesnt matter players all the same age bracket...so some dont go to class or took money for their poor family...better football players are just that
When OSU came into the conference, it caused a misalignment in scheduling. This was to make up for that (albeit several years later). OU had to play back-to-back years at Nebraska and at OSU. OU also played at Iowa State in 86 and 87, and OSU came to Norman both years.
Osborne still has nitemares about the 96 TX vs Neb game when Macovic tried to give him the game. Watch the 4th down call late in the game. No reason to go for it on the their own 29 yd line cept to try and give Neb the game and get better bowl money from Neb going there.
