Working with Instrument Racks in Ableton Live for live performance.
This series is designed to give you some ideas and pointers to incorporate Live into your own live setup.
Your guide through this journey is Tom Lonsborough - he's a member of the live act 2 Billion Beats and also an Ableton Certified Trainer working out of the Manchester MIDI school, a very knowledgeable guy when it comes to working with Ableton Live.
In this part we start by looking at Tom's setup, how he hooks it all up and uses the inputs on his MOTU interface to process inputs in real time in conjunction with Live's features.

Such effort and production value in these videos for such a small audience. Quality stuff here. Thanks for making these videos

Seeing the possibilities of "instrument racks", I am closely reminded of Reason's Combinator, which gives you the exact same options - only within the rack you have already…

Tom Lonsborough, yes, that's right… I have a feeling that, unless someone comes up with an idea that's so unique and lets the product jump way ahead of the others, some time in the near future almost all DAWs will have the same features, only with minor differences in workflow.

Wow! That is exactly what ive been looking for, how to switch instruments on the same track for playing live sets. Perfect. You have bought back my inspiration.

Is there a benefit to having all your midis and vsts in one instrument rack? does it use less CPU power?
@Tomlinsky
@Tomlinsky Месяц назад
Many benefits, the main one I use is one button layering. CPU can be saved by mapping and disabling any instrument(s) not currently in use.

Moved to Live from logic and it always seemed the 'live' tutorials out there to be limited to various types of clip Djing. This is really useful for a pianist attempting instrument changes and track arming etc for each song / scene whilst going through paper notes and a fading memory! Thanks... this series is going to be very useful.

that's right but I need to launch the whole scene to run it, I mean: if I want another clip from the other scene running it cannot be done... do you know any solution?

Thanks for giving Live some love. It's an amazing DAW and once you start messing with sampling with Sampler and Simpler it gets really fun. I love Push 2 as well.

Hello there, I have a question. Is the Behringer U-Phoria UMC404HD Audio Interface good for live performance with Ableton Live, with a decent Computer speed?

i have it setup this way with my midi keyboard controls the playbutton and tempo, but the EXT button prefens me from changing the selectoer when ableton is not playing. i have to hit EXT button and not higlighted, and now i can switch scene whit patch changing... is this normal or am i overlook someting ?

how do you use effect for instruments that are in the same instrument rack ? . when i add an effect for instance a channel tool to make this instrument mono, than ALL instrument in that same rack gets the same effect plugin ?? than this is unusable. than better use the track send and return but that also effects all instrument in the same rack ... so is there a way to use only 1 effect for 1 instrument in the same rack ?

Would love to know how he deals with the generally sloppy midi timing when using external gear plus latency when tracking back into Live via the external audio device? Live is ace when working in the box but ive always found it to be frustrating when trying to use and record external gear. Im of course talking about midi jitter which is why im using an mpc to record midi ( jitter =0%) the limitations of usb will always be a factor!

I mirrored 4 tracks to 1 Instrument Rack with FX. Before CPU @ 23% After CPU @24% however the benefit of chaining is worth the small CPU increase. Once Ableton & NI runs native on M1 it really won't matter. I dig this!!!

Great video! Extremely insightful. Question, at 8:30 he’s using an external instrument device to send midi to what seems to me is a hardware synth. What type of connection do i need to make that happen? (Midi cable/plain usb cable/etc) & could i do that with any hardware synth?

I'm baffled that you didn't demonstrate, that you can (clip) automate enabling and disabling devices, as well. That way, you can turn off CPU intensive soft synths and such, when they're not needed. ESSENTIAL in big setups, especially when running from a dated MBP.

I really wish instrument racks in Ableton could utilize more than one core at a time. It’s such an amazing feature, but very poorly optimized. In order to use all the cores of my computer I have to put all my patches on individual tracks then route midi from specific chains on a separate track dedicated for midi routing.
@SoloElROY
@SoloElROY 2 года назад
How do you send midi to other tracks? I found that only some VSTs allow this with the external instrument device (I'm in Windows) and for the rest I use a little max for live to send the MIDI. I'm curious to know other ways!

Anyone watching... biggggg footnote * Stacking your Instruments/VST's/AU's etc... in one Ableton track on a instrument rack will limit the DAW to using only 1x CPU core for processing. Best to use the rack as a MIDI traffic coordinator and route it to each instrument on it's own track
@dominicklicciardi
@dominicklicciardi 2 года назад
To sidestep doing that, you can route the power button on each instrument to the chain selector macro, such that the instrument will only turn on when selected.
@cmarotta82
@cmarotta82 2 года назад
@@dominicklicciardi tried that. Not very helpful for VST’s that need to load to RAM. Like Keyscape or Omnisphere

It's interesting to see how to use Ableton live...but I was getting uncomfortable, like you....looking at all that data!!! In a "live situation" wouldn't something like a Yamaha Motif, Prophet 8 and Roland JD-Xi...or similar keyboards, handle multitudes of sound that you can control, simply right in front of you?
@amphitheatre
@amphitheatre 7 лет назад
well sure, but do you have 6 hands? for us humans we have to use racks :p
@tedpitzen1080
@tedpitzen1080 7 лет назад
a couple midi cables and you can play all from one synth using 2 hands...with multiple keyboard splits/layers/arpeggios/sequences....or play them individually as well....6 hands would be nice though :)

1st week of learning Ableton is all about chains and groups, if this is news then WTF have you been doing in all those versions of Ableton? Day one, RTFM - if I see one more person surprised at mapping the chain selector then I may need to resort to violence, but it will not be mindless.
@watercolourmark
@watercolourmark 7 лет назад
Just a generalist metaphoric rant, I bugs me when people are surprised regarding standard features of software or hardware - when it would take 30 minutes to skim all the info on the complete thing.
@watercolourmark
@watercolourmark 7 лет назад
Tom Lonsborough I admire your attempt at defending such a lame level of user engagement from a key professional, but shambolic ain't cool anymore. I'll repeat, day one RTFM - he has been talking of using Live for 12 months+, I imagine much longer off and on, and I also imagine he knows a few power users personally. And chains aren't a hidden feature, it is one of the key points for using the software, to miss this is to miss the whole f*cking point of the software beyond the grid and elastic audio. And I understand many users are new and need a grounding, and the internet is full of content doing so, and that content is far less clunky than this, informative and goes into detail. I came here as a a person visiting a professional music channel to get cool power tricks and not an introduction to Ableton. Some good videos out there covering this stuff, sadly this isn't one of them. If you think it is then get out your filter bubble as it is holding you down. Sorry guys, but raise the f*cking bar already, this is lame. EDIT: sorry Tom didn't realise that was you, wouldn't have been so straight if I'd known, but glad I didn't know as I think you both need informing straight on this.
@watercolourmark
@watercolourmark 7 лет назад
John Smith Yes, but Nick is keeping my 13 minutes 27 seconds - I will never get that time back, but I guess he needs it more than me. If the video was entitled 'an Introduction to Instrument Racks' then I wouldn't have watched it, but it is called 'the power of instrument racks', which in the context then that title may be considered click-bait. He also mentioned this in his live stream, how these cool live features blow his tiny mind - I am watching because of that patter.You are all in a mode of defending this lame content for me pointing out it's short falling, rather than attack me maybe explain what is so inspiring regrading this. Is it the clucky production? The weak presentation? The fumbling? The skipped features? Get a grip, it is utterly sh*te click bait, no more and no less - and you only diminish yourself in defending this tripe.
@watercolourmark
@watercolourmark 7 лет назад
John Smith I'll keep you more than informed, I have a right to call crap out and Nick has a right to take that on the chin. It was never about you, just trying to raise the bar.
