The Band of the RAF College and the Central Band of the RAF providing musical support for Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace on 19 May 2024.
It was a sunny and very hot day with very little wind but abundant crowds.
This visit to London was a bit of a "marathon" because I also saw, and took some video footage of, the Grenadier Guards "Black Sunday" (their annual remembrance day), which didn't start until much later in the afternoon. To keep things simple, if I decide that any of my footage of the Black Sunday event is worthy of upload, that will be in a separate video in due course.
00:00 The Band of the RAF College (Cranwell), having left Wellington Barracks and passed the Victoria Memorial, marching along The Mall on their way to St James Palace.
01:17 The Band of the RAF College, having left Friary Court at St James Palace and come out of Marlborough Road, marching along The Mall towards Buckingham Palace, leading a detachment of the Old Guard, playing "Old Panama" (Kenneth Alford) and then "Sarafand" (George Henry Willcocks).
05:14 The Central Band of the RAF, having left Wellington Barracks, marching up Spur Road and approaching Buckingham Palace, leading the New Guard, playing "Voice of the Guns" (Kenneth Alford), and then "Glorious Victory" (W.M.Kendall). The loud voice from the beginning is a nearby tour guide explaining to his tour group how the ceremony works.
07:15 The Central Band of the RAF marching along The Mall and turning into Marlborough Road as they lead a detachment of the New Guard towards St James Palace, playing the tail-end of "Arromanches" (Kelly), then "Old Comrades" ("Alte Kameraden") (Carl Teike), and then starting "Aces High", also known as the Luftwaffe March (Ron Goodwin).
11:16 The Central Band of the RAF marching back along Spur Road to Wellington Barracks.

Hi Mike, apologies for not speaking to you, I must admit I thought you looked familiar when we I saw you down Birdcage Walk I think it was, but I had only met you the once in Windsor so wasn't certain it was you. I'll be sure to say hi next time. You were right though, it was busy, best to stay away from those tour guides as well 😂 Aces High is one of my favourite marches to listen to and to play, especially when I dabbled on the sop. Thanks for the video. 👍

Hi Mr Baton, thanks, and no need for apologies! I don't think I actually saw you, but that was probably because I had a bad leg that day in London (probably from the train journey!) so getting through the crowds quickly but safely was taking even more concentration than usual. Hopefully it's getting better now. Yes, the tour guides can be a source of noise, and seem to turn up once I've picked what I thought was a relatively quiet spot. I have to remember though, that they with their tour-parties have every bit as much right to be there as I have. I've always liked Aces High. I gather you're from a brass band background, and particularly as you mention having played the soprano cornet. I was in brass bands for decades, with my main and favourite instrument being euphonium. The euph part in the brass band version of Aces High was very different in places to what I hear in the military band version.

Hi Charlotte, yes, it was a long and fun-packed day with superb weather, although in my case more "jippee" than "yippee" ("jip" being an old slang expression for pain) because 4 hours is a lot of time to spend between events, walking around crowded parks with a bad leg without many places to sit (I couldn't afford to spend too much time sitting in pubs...). Still, I'm glad I went.

@@MikeM14-40honey, I fully understand about the, “jippee” part. I admire anyone who is able to get around in any capacity to video and film
