Best way I learned to check for adequate purge was with a lighter, if you have one. If there’s still oxygen in the pipe the flame will stay lit, if the purge is full it will blow argon on to the flame and extinguish the flame

Any breeze will extinguish a flame. He has his purge vents correct in they are on top. Your best bet, start your argon, slow, or you’ll just create a vortex of oxygen and get sugaring, go make your next fit up. What I was taught, and I’m only sharing because you have numbers in your handle and they keep calling one another “brother”,

20 years ago, i remember welding lots of sanitary tri-clamp fittings on a manual turntable with a purge hole in the bottom, and tape with a pinhole over the top. probably something like 2mm wall pipe. i would fuse weld the seam all the way around with a purge flow of 15 cfh and about 80 amps. done at the right speed and the inside was almost flush and required little grinding to be almost invisible.
@conaldeugenepeterson2147
@conaldeugenepeterson2147 4 года назад
I’m doing something similar with .5” od 316L tubes with a .06” wall, but using filler wire. Getting the turn table rpms correct while backing off the amps about 2/3’s of the way around was the hardest thing about it. I haven’t been able to find many videos using a turntable & tig in conjunction.

Just a tip of advice. If you are welding something big that requires you to purge for 10 mins + do not grind out the bridge tacks when you get to them. Instead stop before them and start a little after the tack and when you have welded everything you can without grinding then you can take all the bridge tacks away at once. The reason behind this is when you grind you push air into the pipe. This doesn't matter all that much on a smaller pipe as you can see in the video but on bigger stuff it can mess up your purge completely. I know this from first hand experience. I had an oxygen meter when doing this particular weld and when I grinded out the tack I had to wait 15 minutes again to start welding
@kf8575
@kf8575 3 года назад
Procedure we use where i work, is a 3/32 to 5/32 gap (obviously bigger gap for the likes of 8" and above, smaller gap for 1/2" pipe) use 1/16 filler, 85- 90 amps and move fast, moving side to side to break down the featherd edge and dipping fast on one side, pulling the metal across to the other. Works well for me. Nice smooth well profiled root, lovely and clean. Silver with a very slight gold band either side. Then again, yanks do love their heavy filler rods and low amps. The carbon procedures we work to all use 115-135 amp root with 3/32 rod, a 1/8 to 5/32 gap and a tiny root face, literally the burr from prepping it wiped off with a file.

I use the key hole method as well. Usually when my gap is too tight on the wire. So I have to feed from outside, the key hole is how I know I'm getting root penetration and it's fusing both sides of the bevel landing.

Recently was taught a rather extreme but effect way to weld your root without a gap Basically sch10 SS factory end butt to butt weld or prepped with barely a 1/16" land, argon at 90+ cfh (this is in a big Fab Shop) 3/4" purge hole, and the you Vibrate more than walk your cup along the seam, your puddle is like 3/8" wide, there's undercut at the front of your puddle that you want to look for, but be careful because too much undercut is the telltale sign that you're about to blow through, you want a more circular puddle rather than a teardrop shape, it's crazy but when down right you can fuse some of those really offset inner diameters

If this method was used for backfeeding the bottom of monel or hastealloy and sometimes inconel there would be cold wire throughout that root. Should not have to jam wire into the puddle and wait for it to consume. With the right torch angle and heat the filler wire should just “fall off” into the puddle

Try less wire on the root and weave left to right,a bit more amps( on a 4mm pipe ca 100-120 amp) and move a bit faster,it will give you that more golden root finish less ice or cauliflower "oxidised" inside finish,we use ca 8 liter argon per minute,backing gas ca 1 liter,, Greetings from Germany.

Ummm... that’s standard. But no worries, that’s what an apprenticeship is for. No one expects you to be born with this knowledge. And you really must hate your fitter if you are only allowing 1/8” gap on sch 40 stainless. That $hit moves A LOT, gets metal bound A LOT!
@sillynacannada6718

Hence his bridge tacks, but some jobs you can’t do them, it’s considered an arc mark and the pipe compromised.

@brianbonetta
@brianbonetta 5 лет назад
Have you seen those old doors that use skeleton keys? =● when your heat gets out of control, or when your travel speed gets slow, a wide hole opens up, digging a wider opening to both sides of the bevel, hence the word keyhole. Your puddle then becomes hard to control. Jody from Welding Tips and tricks has a video's explaining this with great footage.
