Is #bollywood and its messaging on both extremes problematic? Do the themes of toxic masculinity & performative feminism send a wrong message to the public? I hope you like the video where we explore the themes of #animalmoviereview , its impact and whether actors like #ranbirkapoor and #salmankhan have a moral duty as actors. I hope you like 2 Sides Of Bollywood & Its Problems

I just wanna say ‘abusing is abusing’ and ‘cheating is cheating’ idc about gender or sexuality. Showing these toxic themes is fine, not making the characters learn the consequences of their actions in the movie is also fine (because sadly sometimes bad characters or even in reality bad people end up living good lives) *BUT* glorifying these themes is wrong

Do you think everyone in the world get punished for all these things? Because no. Men like that roam free if their daddy's are not rich af. My uncle was abusive and cheated on his wife 2 times and he hasn't been punished till now for what he has done. My aunt won't ever leave him because she can't because of her children. He never agrees that he is bad or did anything wrong. It's a movie nobody is gonna learn anything even if they learn they are already evil. So stfu. Ranvihay was wrong and got away with it. Nothing new in the world. Nobody is gonna learn anything or is getting valid because of it. There are evil people in the world. Ranvijay was never a hero he was a anti hero. Vanga never glorified it. Ranvijay got the consequences. His father still dies after doing everything. His wife also leaves him unlike Pretty in Kabir Singh. We clearly see Geetanjli has had enough but if they still get together people do get together after abusive relationships also. My aunt still love her husband after going through much. So it's normal but not good. If you are learning anything from movies you are already dumb af.

By the end of Baazigar, the protagonist ended up being more problematic than the antagonist. The antagonist just took over someone's empire (which is not justified), but the protagonist also murdered three innocent people (Shilpa Shetty and two of her friends).
@swan_909
@swan_909 10 месяцев назад
That is one messed up opinion. You think the antagonist who brought a whole family on streets, tried to sexually assault a woman and basically caused death of two innocent members of that family, callously covered his own daughter's death and then tried to murder the lead and his mom is less problematic. Wow just wow. That antihero not protagonist died due the route he choose to punish antagonist. The lead wouldn't have done anything if villain didn't destroy his family in first place so by that reason alone the villian will always be the worst one out of two.
@swan_909

@rajattyagi8963 do you lack reading skills? The claim by op was that chopra was less problematic than Ajay. It wasn't about who is more virtuous. Okay. I watched 'URI' director's interview where he told that applications for NDA increased many times after a few months of the Uri fever. Movies do influence impressionable and young people. It is undeniable. Animal kinda validates a lot of 'conventional' regression which majority women are already dealing with and that's why people are very emotional about it. Boys who already have a degrading mentality towards women(even worse than the Animal's character) have found a reference to feel validated about their shitty thinking. N I witnessed the Kabir Singh fever among teenage boys when even girls started to find their personal Kabirs as he was 'romantic'🙂. A lot of OTT content like Four More Shots is wierd but audience reacted very differently to it. Even women didn't like that content. It was seen as cringefest. Mass reaction in theatres is kinda discomforting. Gangs of Wasseypur was wild in some scenes but weren't those characters shown as hardcore criminals and gangsters. I have never scene any cute insta edit of Sardar Khan and his wife, he's mostly mocked as meme material so .....

After I watched Arjun Reddy and felt a bit ruffled, I sat down with my thoughts and tried to understand the context. I went to see Animal with a much clearer perspective. The film Arjun Reddy was called Arjun Reddy because it was all about that person, his life, his choices and who he is. It was not named some pyar ki kahani or anything. If you watch that movie with this perspective in mind that 'I am watching Arjun Reddy, it's that guy's story' then it won't ruffle you at all. So when I went to see Animal, I kept the movie title in mind. It's raw, animalistic, violent, much like what an animal is. I think Vanga attaches a lot of meaning to his movie titles. If you keep that in mind then it is far easy to understand and not be offended. Also, in both movies, the protagonist is a genius. They are great at everything they do, be it study, sports, their work. These are unattainable standards for most. These aspects are glorified as well. So isn't it really us who is at fault if we choose and aspire to the violence and misogyny depicted and completely ignore the genius? Because you gotta work hard (and maybe still fall short) to be good at something, but the other stuff comes easy. Violence, hairstyle, badmouthing, disrespect etc. The audience is actually smart enough to pick.

If one can truly be influenced by watching a movie, it reflects their level of intellect and suggests a certain susceptibility or weakness of mind. Even SRK in Don and Don 2 had a happy ending where he says his dialogue, "Don ko pakar na mushkil nahi namumkin hai". Does that mean the movie is glorifying and promoting theft?? Art in its purest form will always be about the expressionist (expressing what the artist wants to say) rather than the communicator (focusing on the concerns of the viewer).

The problem is that movies/series like Animal and Four more shots allow the abuser/wrong doer to justify his/her actions (in their own minds at least). A cheating girl will give the example of Tammnah Bhatia and will say, "Even I don't regret anything just like her." An abusive boyfriend will give example of Radhey or Ranvijay and will say, "Even I can do in the name of love and family." In a country like India where Cinema has such a huge impact on society, one MUST think of the social responsibility while making a film for the society (to view).

Since then a lot of work has gone in to educate the Indian audience why slapping your wife/partner or cheating on them or stalking a girl is utterly wrong. People have a slightly better understanding around these things now. Movies like Animal and Kabir Singh that doesn’t show consequences to such atrocities/abuse against women are pushing us back. Dear Anmol, while your analysis is on point as far as the content of the movies go, it gets lopsided the moment you consider the impact of these movies. While movies like ‘Four more shots’ and ‘Thank you for coming’ sank without a trace, we all know where Animal is headed. Basically it’s being lapped up by most of the men and I presume a lot of women as well. On that metric alone, we can glean what might be a more pressing issue for our country. As far as comparing with movies like ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ is concerned, the difference is of the tone of the movie. In Animal, Rannvijay is the epitome of cool and in multiple scenes he’s hailed as one. Be it the ‘Salute the Champion’ or the way the Pind supports him even in the cheating sequence. You may argue that Rannvijay is shown as a deranged character, but that is not so as far as the mythos of the movie is concerned. Lastly, movies have a huge impact on how society functions. Beyond the hairstyle and the dressing up. When SRK essayed the role of every mother in laws ‘wet dream’ in DDLJ, there was an influx of young boys being saccharine sweet to the girls family. When Radhe embraced his own disaster in ‘Tere Naam’ so did scores of young men. Now in Rannvijay they have an Uber cool, successful, rich and apparently well educated man, spewing ‘Tateisms’ and it will show on the society. Peace out.

Really? Out of the ghory crimes of Ranjvijay, all 4 more shots shows only cheating and i don't think any if them asks the man to lick their boots after that. So, Ranvijay is an equal criminal to Damini Rizvi Roy? Then very clearly you have double standards about the moral boundaries for men and women. You just don't realize it. The subtle character portrayal, especially the implicit nature of characters as either 'good' or 'bad,' plays a pivotal role in audience engagement. Take Bobby's character, for instance; when identified as the antagonist, the audience intuitively understands not to take his actions seriously, allowing for a nuanced viewing experience. Similarly, in Gangs of Wasseypur, characters are painted as 'bad'-as goons and scum-eliciting a collective perception from the audience. The viewers enjoy these characters and doesn't translate into a desire to emulate their actions. It's a testament to the intricate nature of human psychology. In contrast, consider Ranbir's character, initially presented as a hero in a conspicuously 'massy' manner. Despite later revealing shades of moral flaws, the audience's initial affinity lingers. The deliberate showing of this character arc creates a dichotomy among viewers. Even as gray shades emerge, the audience finds themselves still rooting for Ranbir by the movie's conclusion. This intentional division of the audience into two camps underscores the director's provocative strategy, sparking conversations and debates that transcend the film itself.

Leave a movie as a movie. Its a form of entertainment. Thinking of changing society norms through movie is a dumb option. If someone needs to change the thinking of society is only through education and home environment. Adults should be smart enough on what to take away from the the movie . I loved Animal. Do agree 2 nd half was a bit of a drag. Loved the Bgm and songs.

I have almost no problems with fucked up characters in movies, but there is no denying that the Indian audience is easily influenced by them especially the younger generation. I am the same generation so I see that happen all the time. Atleast there be some consequence, if not that just don't write problematic themes in a way that it seems like glorification. My theatre had people screaming and hooting during the cheating scenes and booing when Geetanjali is confronting Ran Vijay. It's just sad honestly. I get it though, the cast and crew have no control over how people consume their movie. but it's a good sign that there is a conversation around this.

Superb points raised 👌🏻… also if the society has been showing sweet, responsible love stories with loyalty and fidelity, janam janam ka saath etc, since so many years , why do we still have so much infidelity & short-lived romances around? When they show good human beings, who are honest & hardworking, why do we still have scammers & dishonest people around? A human being is nurtured at home, taught right or wrong at home or is shaped by circumstances, and some are just inherently good or bad people. Even 2 siblings don’t grow up to be the same sometimes. So stop taking films as education.. there are schools, religion & upbringing for that. Also movies reflect a section of the society that already exists, whether it is irrational feminism or misogyny.. they are not creating these characters out of thin air.. yes they are glorifying them which is questionable… but it’s up to us to just take it as good or bad storytelling & move on. We can’t just keep seeing good people around because there aren’t in real life.

I feel like Animal is a classic case of Selective Outrage. Heer in Rockstar also cheated on her husband, but that's romanticised. Four more shots is the worst content ever produced in the name of feminism. Have you seen Jailer? You don't classify that as violent and gruesome? Also, if Animal is such a bad movie, why is making so much money? Why not go and watch Sam Bahadur instead? Like Vicky Kaushal said "Maza to sabko negative me hi aata hai." The Indian audiance never puts their money where there mouth is. And always points fingers at Bollywood.

The first half of animal is copied from godfather, and the second half is horrible. People aren't watching it because it is well written, people are watching it because of the shock value, misogyny and gore it shows. Men choosing to call animal's protagonist an "alpha male" over sam bahudur tells us very clearly what an "alpha male" means to them. They can lie about alpha males being there to protect others and what not, but their choice proves that to them "alpha male" means an angsty "cool" man who can degrade women i.e. show her her place (in their minds} and beat up villains (muslim villains especially) while some song plays in the background.

I think it's about the tone of the movie. It's not necessary that the toxicity or such characters should always end up losing in life but it is how the character is portrayed whether in a heroic manner or just as a protagonist. It's not necessary that the antagonist has to be villain always. But from whose perspective a cinema is shown, audience has a softcorner for them. A film like that should be open to the audiences to analyze the lead character in their own rationale. One should not force toxicity with the help of mass bgm to the audience. For eg in recent malayalam movie Mukundan Unni associates, noone watching that feels like the protagonist is the "HERO". Instead we are left with a sigh of how such people exist in our society and such people will definitely face their karma eventually. That's the tone set by the movie. So yes cinema has a huge influence in this country and filmmakers cannot run away from their responsibility by calling it their creative freedom. A good filmmaker can make good movies without crossing that thin life of difference.

Let's focus on the specifics of 'Animal' rather than deflecting with unrelated examples or assuming what happened in a theater means unanimous approval. Dismissing valid critiques by pointing to past movies or labeling reviewers as 'holier than thou' doesn't contribute to a meaningful conversation. While I agree that both sides are problematic my concern and something I’ve been noticing is with the rise of Andrew Tate and other alpha males and then also these alpha male, masculine movies is that they encourage young boys, young men to act like this, and I’ve been noticing this both in western culture and in Indian culture and it’s really scary for women. Already the domestic abuse cases and violence against women are already extremely high in India and unfortunately there are so many devastating stories you hear about such as shown with in The Delhi crime TV show with Shefali Shah that makes you scared to hear more extreme cases come up already every day there’s violence against women in some sort of situation. All you have to do is go in any sort of Indian news whether it’s against an older woman or a younger woman you can even be found on Reddit or other social media platform. I agree that these feminist movies are just as problematic. I never have to worry about a woman sexually assaulting or abusing a man in such a way that it destroys his entire life cheating is absolutely horrible. Should never be known to anyone, but with these type of alpha males, and, Andrew Tates, they feel as if they can control another person. On top of that not once have I ever heard a woman cheering or hooting at those feminist scenes where the woman cheats on her husband and says you know what whatever I can do whatever I want yet whenever these toxic scenes show up there’s always men hooting and cheering. If producers and directors, want to make toxic male characters as a lead characters, then at least give them a ending that it leads to consequences that reminds the audience because unfortunately, despite actors saying, don’t listen to them there are so many men who use these type of movies to dictate what they do in life And those lead to extreme consequences that can ruin lives.

" On top of that not once have I ever heard a woman cheering or hooting at those feminist scenes where the woman cheats on her husband and says you know what whatever I can do whatever I want yet" they do actually. SO THE IMPACT ON SOCIETY BY TOXIC IDEOLIGY is only determined by what you saw in real life. PLENTY OF WOMEN ARE FALLING INTO THIS WH0RING AROUND AND CHEATING BECAUSE LAWS FAVOUR WOMEN AND ARE COMPLETELY AGAINST MEN. Entire western countries and cultures are plagued by femini$m and women wh0ring around and regretting it WHY DO YOU THINK THERE IS NO IMPACT OF GLORIFICATION OF WOMEN WH0RING AROUND IS ON INDIAN WOMEN ? ohh because you did not see so it do not happen as often? HOW FOOKING HARD YOU SEE TOXIC BS IS GLORIFIED INSTED OF THESE EXCUSEES AND JUSTIFICATIONS and what about tate that you find so problamatic and impactful ? "I never have to worry about a woman sexually assaulting or abusing a man in such a way that it destroys his entire life cheating is absolutely horrible." then you are uneducated. paternity fraud is rampant in west 12-33% of fatheres do not know they are raising someone elsee child, germancy, france removed dna testing as too many women in those countries cannot be revelaed as cheaters. and why are you pretending that a man is not abu$ed by wife in india? false accusations? indian women rank 4th in world in abu$ing men. Like I thought the movie was enjoyable but wouldn’t call it a piece of art because it isn’t and most ppl should know that. If u want the definition of art, it’s called Alan Wake 2, that is real work of art. Animal is just a movie that is enjoyable to watch, but not something that transcends what it is.

I watched a video on the same topic by another RU-vidr (DR). Your take is objective and nuanced. I genuinely admire your critiquing abilities.

Audiences usually are mature enough to dissociate a movie from reality and like it for the entertainment factor. And just like Manoj Vajpayee said, "A movie can only change hairstyles at max., and not the society. But one shouldn't dictate what should or shouldn't be made". Art is a form of expression, not a propoganda tool. If you don't like it, don't go & watch. But if you think you can force your opinion on others, blackmail the society to cancel/ban something you don't personally approve of, then do watch the last scene of the film post end credits!

Its u who is fool enough to not realise the music, art, drama, dance, stories etc has historically shaped our society. Movies do the same. Not one or two movies but almost every other movie objectifies women and we are at the point where its already normalized a lot and women are fighting to normalise it and in such sensitive environment, movies like animal just reinforces the same notions and even if 1% ppl are influenced by it then it will cause a lot of damage UP wants to ban women in public places after 8 pm. Gujarat wants to ban marriage without parent's concern to "protect" women. And ppl are voting for them, often in majority. Tell me that misogyny is not deep in pur society

I'm so happy that someone has something to say about Sayani Gupta's character in 4 more shots. She was the epitome of toxicity.
