I love your humility, vulnerability and honesty. Traits so important for a teacher but lacking to some degree in most. Even the most advanced pianists have room to learn new things. Music would be boring if there were a limit on how much you can learn.

Students as well as us are truly lucky to get lessons from him. Easily one of the best teachers on the platform. Not only a classical pianist but one who teaches from experience. I believe I had a guy on the internet ask me something like, "if i don't have a teacher, what would you recommend"? Josh wright will always be my first recommendation to anyone who is self studying/teaching themselves whether that's with youtube lessons, or courses.

If it's physically, taking walks, gentle stretches for healthy fasciae (but avoid overstretching)... if it's mental: switch up pieces for just a day, play something else what you like. Horowitz said that he dedicated 2 hours every week to music he never listened to or played before. Maybe play for a friend you really can relax around.

I won’t even touch a piece until I’ve listened to many recordings of it over weeks or months. My final version is a tapestry of my favorite interpretations from other pianists woven together to the best of my ability. I’m trying to learn the second Schubert impromptu from opus 90. I’m aiming at Falvai’s interpretation. When I got to feeling somewhat comfortable with it I went back and listened to Falvai again and realized I’m not even close! Which is just more information to process for learning and improving. I saw your video on the “pearly notes” (or was it pearly fingers?) technique and it’s really helping. If I over-apply a staccato technique and really focus on separating each finger when practicing , it seems to magically open up a phrase and have the counterintuitive effect of smoothing it out.

This has great parallels with your Repertoire Museums video too - a mini retirement from individual pieces has been a game changer for me! Along the same lines of a mini retirement, I sometimes enjoy just playing rather than practising. I think it was Mitsuko Uchida who spoke about the joy of simply playing badly alone :-)

That's funny, because I've always thought it would be somehow weak or "wrong' to imitate the way another pianist plays a piece....but you are 100% correct, and I think I'll do that with a few of the pieces I'm working on now (Claire de Lune, Chopin Ballade #3, Beethoven's Pathetique Sonata). Thank you!
