In this video we start working on the new project....a 2 stroke go kart with a Yamaha kt-100 engine. The kt 100 is a two stroke motor that is capable of 15 horsepower in this 10,000 rpm go kart. This is a completely race legal go cart that we are super excited to get completely dialed in and make some awesome videos with it.
This barn find racing go kart has not run for a few years now and definitely needs quite a bit of work to get it back into its prime so be sure to stay tuned for videos of it in the future.
Thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe!

@jarradpowell8231
@jarradpowell8231 6 лет назад
The BCR on the head will be the kart shop that RE built this motor, I rebuild these ever 10 hours when in race conditions,we still use these motors in Australia for a bit of fun. To prime the carb, take spark plug out and place palm over intake and turn motor over until you feel fuel on your hand. The high and low jets are your fuel meters, start with low jet 1 and a half turn out and high jet at 3/4 turn that's a good start. Supposing this is the walbro carbs we use here. Make sure you haven't got gunk in your crankcase from when you cleaned it. Most importantly have fun these things are sick,wait until you get to use it on a track.
@jarradpowell8231
@jarradpowell8231 6 лет назад
Also don't idle these motors on a stand without load, your exhaust will clog itself up and spark plug will go to shit. Also probably need a rebuild kit through the carb.

Make sure you have the right oil mixes, also check compression, another cheaper and easier way to deal with low compression is put some 2 stroke oil down the cylinder before starting
@mikec1544
@mikec1544 6 лет назад
Check the compression. Low compression in 2 smokes makes it act like that. New plug and new gaskets, clean the carb it should run like a top
@justinblanck5287
@justinblanck5287 6 лет назад
Get a carb rebuild kit, the little gaskets may be dryed out. Your compression should be more than 110lb. Your magneto may need to be timed, that will be under the flywheel just like a durt bike, it may have markings on it to time it. The kart looks to be a 80s, most likely margay or yamah, there should be a number stamped on the inside of on of the front king pine holders.

Build Break Repeat I'd put a new spark plug in it first. 2 strokes can foul a spark plugs quickly so might be a good idea to have a few around. It'll look like it's getting apart but won't be strong enough to run. The hand over the carb to draw fuel in is a good tip. You can to the same thing by placing your hand over the exhaust outlet and instead of sucking fuel it'll force fuel up into the carb. You can hold your hand over the exhaust until it starts to run, If you can't find any initial carbs setting online turn the high speed all the way in and set it to 1-1/2 turns out and the low speed needle to 3/4 out. There's probably a air speed screw too and that'll take some fine tuning to get it set right. But you'll love how much power you'll get out of that little engine and It'll teach you a lot about tuning. Keep your eyes on the lookout for a 2 stroke dirt bike you can get a enjoin out of. You could probably pick one up for real cheap. A 125 on that little cart would be sick! You'll have to rig up a shift lever and a clutch lever to get it off the line but you won't need to clutch after that to shift up and down. Just imagine having 6 gears! I'm sure you already thow this but they can got up to100mph with the right gearing. This cart the way it is now is still gonna be a blast! Looking forward to next video when you get it going!

Build Break Repeat Oh yeah and look into getting a kidney belt. Those racing carts can make you sore from how hard they turn. A lot of race car drivers start out racing go carts they're good practice and they'll reach you a lot about turning at high speed. I see a lot of drifting and bonuts in your future lol. Just be careful and keep having fun! Your channel is awesome!

Kt100s in general are very finicky engines. The coils fail often due to the heat of the engine when racing along withe the cdi box. If it runs good cold and dies when warm it'll need a coil soon. As for the carb the high speed needle should be 2 1/2 out and low speed is 1 3/8. Adjust as needed when full throttle. Also the compression should be anywhere from 110 to 150. But chances are its the carb or main coil.

I personally like to run my 2 strokes with a little extra rich mixture because its better to use a little more gas than risk hurting the motor. And if it still doesnt run check your fuel/oil mixture. Good luck.
@nybriks7336

Take your carb out and clean the idle circuit with carb cleaner an unscrew all needle jets spray them thru also, an blow out holes. Make sure diaphragm has no dry rot damage gas has a tendency to do so after sitting for a while an can gum up an make stick. Check spacing on your excitor coil if its too close it wont successfully spark possibly grounding itself out, causing spoty spark. Also check your spark plugs always, there your window to your motor. Make sure the gas oil mixture is correct

The engine has been around since the early '80s. The setup you have is probably dated 1990-1993 vintage. This was the height of my racing career. I ran almost the exact same setup in the WKA Nationals. I know every part of that kart like the back of my hand.

That's a crazy little 2 smoker, cool find. Also looks like an early 90's Margay. And like some other guys said, clean the carb well and make sure to prime for enough fuel. Is that a Walbro carb? If so you may be able to find rebuild kits at a small engine repair shop, check the tiny screens inside of it and the needles. Then run through all your gaskets to make sure there isn't a leak anywhere. Thanks and Gig 'Em.
@markssmallengines3542
@markssmallengines3542 6 лет назад
Do a leakdown pressure test on the motor incase a crank case gasket is blown or crank case seals are shot an also do the carb. Id say there is a vaccume leak somewhere. If you dont have a pressures testing kit you can start it back up and spray carb cleaner around all the carb/gaskets, crankcase gaskets an jug base gasket If it stalls as soon as you spray the liquid means its sucking in air an you can pin point the exact leak when you spray the cleaner.

Turn the idle screw(the big black one) all the way in, the give 1,5 turn out. There should be another screw which is for the air mixture. Turn that all the way in, and give 1,5 turn out. Start the engine, and adjust the idle so that the wheels turn and let the engine warm up 10-15 minutes. When warm adjust the air mixture screw by 0,5 turns (out or in) the goal is to find the highest idle, when thats done, you can adjust the idle screw again to find the best idle

Low speed jet 1.5 turns out, High speed 1/2-5/8 out. But... you need to rebuild that carb first. It's a Walbro and you can likely get it online. The Pumper diaphragm is likely stiff and is not able to pump fuel. Also, the needle is likley shot and not sealing correctly either.

you want a carb kit for that carb change out the diaphragms as its a pumping carb . best way to check it is to see if its lifting fuel from a lower level . if it pulls fuel from lower the pump is working , if not there is your problem . you should also have a pop off pressure gauge or a little hand pump to measure the pop off pressure . i will see if i can find you a link .

Nice buy!!! 2-stroke engines need good compression in the cylinder and the crankcase... When the piston moves twds TDC, it compress's the fuel/oil-air mivture in the combustion chamber. When the piston moves twds BDC, it compress's the fuel/oil-air mixture in the crankcase. If the seal of any of the following components is defective, the engine will not run properly: Head gasket, cylinder base gasket , piston ring(s), lower case half gasket/sealant, crankshaft seals... Also check the reed petals on reed-valve engines and the rotary disc sealing and condition on rotary valve engines...

You should have poured some 2stroke oil in the spark plugs hole before you tried to turn it over
@consolehacker54
@consolehacker54 6 лет назад
A bit of oil in the cylinder can also help if the rings are a little stuck, or just bone dry from sitting. On a (4 stroke) BMW motorcycle I have due to the way the engine is laid out, after sitting for long periods oil will run down away from the rings and cause low compression

OK, so that "Bash Bar" as you called it with the clever sticker on it is a chassis stiffener bar, you adjust it to change how much the rear of the kart flexes in curves, & combined with a bunch of other settings it'll help you hook up in the turns -
@Mad-Duk_Machine_Werkes
@Mad-Duk_Machine_Werkes 6 лет назад
Most common thing for an old Two-stroke RACE engine thats been sitting that long would be CRANK SEALS - if the fuel tank & line was that brittle, and the vacuum-pulse line from the crankcase was too, why wouldnt they be? Air & Vacuum leaks will DESTROY a two stroke - as a lean condition will cause the piston to weld itself to the cyl walls, might as well just get the numbers off the motor and start right off with a fresh set of rings and all new gaskets and two seals...... Also that clutch seems like its not releasing properly, I noticed when you hit the brakes it was really dragging the engine down, you have a problem there too- we always ran Horstmann Lock-up clutches in the 90's on the 2-strokes, dont know what brand you have there? Best place for advise and possibly old NOS parts would be TS Racing in Central FL, as they have been a Margay Kart and Yamaha Kart engine dealer since the dawn of time!
@Wylie013
@Wylie013 6 лет назад
Good Vintage Kart you have acquired there at a great price. Looks like a Margay from the 80's. I have a copy of the Yamaha owners manual from the mid 1970's when these motors first came out. Standard Carb setting is High speed needle (H) 3/4 + or - 3/16, Idle needle (L) 7/8 + or - 3/16 Idle speed 3,000 to 3,200 rpm. The inlet screen gets clog so check that is clean, also the metering lever standard is 1.4mm below the diaphragm mount best to make up a little gauge to check that. Once you get it runni ng properly operating range is 10,000 to 14,000 rpm. With the right gearing it is capable of 100 MPH. Raced these in the 70's & 80's have one setup with two of these motors on.

The box on the steering wheel is a digitron tach and temp gauge, should have sensors going to the plug wire and the cylinder head of the motor. The clutch needs to be cleaned if the wheels are spinning with the starter, probably just dirt and rust in there. Most likely a margay frame, a great buy for $400.00. My Dad was a kart designer for Moss Kart back in the 1960s after working for Buddy Baker, so us kids grew up around and in kart racing. Geared right that kart will easily do 70-80 mph, always wear a freaking helmet!

Put air filter on it. They also make small engine fuel filters. Can pick one up at any small engine shop. Check gap in spark plug. Hold foot on break when starting. I raced a kt 100 on dirt racing kart. I've raced for many years. Also when adjusting your carb watch ur tac to see what rpms your are running. Should idle around 4500 rpms

the pipe with the sticker on it is not a bash bar, its a so called stabilizer bar. You can install it to make the chassis more riggid. You can also fine tune by rotating the flat part in the horizontal or vertical position. (horizontal: more flex, vertical: less flex)

I was in Karting for many years ago. I'm not sure the exact year but I'm quite sure that Kart is a vintage Margay Lynx. It's either an 86-87-or 1988. The M on the seat cover is a Margay trademark. I would love to find one in that condition for complete restoration. You have quite a find. The KT-100 is probably one of the finest 2 stroke engines ever made for the beginner. Good luck son..

There is still gunk in the carburetor. Take apart,again, completely, blow out all the passages, reassemble. Main Jet 3 1/2 turns out, this will be rich. Once running, and warmed up, lean it out slowly, when the engine,"comes on the pipe", RPM will come up, then richen it a bit.

There are thousands of those engines in Australia and we have only stopped mainstream racing them in the last couple of years (THANKS MICK DOOHAN ). @mikeroberts7775
@mikeroberts7775 6 лет назад
It’s mike roberts from way back when. It’s a JICA kart you need to choke it by putting your hand over the carb. And if you are driving it and it gets hot put your hand over the carb so that it will cause it to suck in more fuel and cool it. Under racing conditions you will find a lot of people doing this at the end of the straight. Take the head off and see if the piston has ever been stuck. In other words are the score marks in the barrel. What you referred to as a bash bar with the Surgeon Generals sticker on it is actually a bar that is used to stiffen the chassis for faster longer tracks. If it had fuel in it when you picked it up the carb is probably gummed up. Do not leave any fuel in it and let it sit always drain the tank before you put it to bed. I am just thinking off the top of my head. Another thing you could do is buy a 125cc Honda MX motor with the six speed box and you should be able to buy motor mounts that will enable you to bolt it to that chassis. Then all you would need to do is mount a shifter on the steering column and the clutch handle. Not a big deal. That would give you something that is getting close to the shifter cart you have always wanted. They don’t have the power of a purpose built shifter motor then again they don’t cost thousands of bucks. Is there a name on the chassis. Have fun.

What should the compression be for this motor. ? I just picked up a kt100 on a nice Prowler kart frame? I got a hell of a deal on it but I don't know anything about this motor I haven't fired it up yet I have just been reading all the comments trying to figure out carb settings and stuff glad I read to start it under a load! The motor is off the cart right now and I was going to try and start it on a engine stand I'm glad I didn't I'm going to go ahead and probably rebuild carb. While I'm at this point! Thanks for any info I also got 3 dry clutches 2 that are a horstman 2 disk, but they are the wrong size on the shaft it came as extra parts the one that fits the KT100 is a 1 disk dry cheap looking clutch? I'm 6.3 220lb what type of clutch do I or should I run for it to handle what I need??? And eventually I want to figure out and learn how to make stock kt100 fast and what that involves? Thxs for any info.

Race karts are expensive! I used to fix these things and they need to be rebuilt after almost every race. Try getting a new cylinder head, piston rings, and piston. Might need new road valves also. Wouldn't hurt to put a new spark plug and re-gap the coil and also get a carb rebuild kit. Cleaning out the exhaust helps sometimes also. Two strokes are dope tho haha

Maybe test crank-seals? Hold a paper in front of the carb to test the suction. Also try to use starter-gas on the crank seals/crankcase while the engine is running and listen for change in rpm. Considering the engine has been sitting for a while, these seals tend to dry up.. Just a thought :)

Thats from the 70s if you want to be successful you need a modern chassis and also an engine rebuild every season

That clutch is a wet clutch. It needs oil in it but I can’t remember what kind it takes.

Swap out your spark plug in between starting and running it. I have found with 2 strokes they flood with fueleasily and when your plug is wet they won't run for nothing.

Need to watch cranking it over like that an the engine not starting it could wear the rings an piston if it’s not sucking in the mixed gas . I’d rebuild the engine top and bottom an new seals on crank

The crank vacuum comes from good rings and head seals. You can also put a bit of 2 stroke or crank oil in the compression chamber to help reseat the rings.

The tuning for these carbs start at 2 turns then work your way to 1 1/4 turn on low jet and 1/2 to a 1/4 turn on high jet, best to check spark plug every time you drive after making adjustments. that’s with a fuel ratio of 20 litres: 1 Litres of oil, new spark plug would help. I’ve raced them for about 5 years and they are a bloody strong engine. You can easy get 16,000 rpm with these engines, also check the rotor gap with a business card thickness. I’m from the land down under 🇦🇺cylinder head temp shouldn’t go above 200 degrees Celsius, not to sure about exhaust temp tho.

check the crank seals. and btw that carb is called a tillotson. so internal fuel pump and no jets your "jets" are those needle adjustments. if you need parts to rebuild it or anything look up scooter swapshop talk to brandon he knows all about those

Make sure you guys mix the gas and oil right like 50:1 or whatever the engine calls for

50:1 is to poor for this Kind oft motor It needs about 20:1

Definitely check compression. Just because it "sounds" like it has good compression doesnt mean it does. If you cant find compression specs for that engine then shoot for at least 90psi. Anything less and it needs the top end done. Also check your reed valves if it has it. They will be behind the carb, tucked in the cylinder. They should shut smooth and be free of cracks and debris. You issue is definitely with one of these 2 things. Not much else ever goes wrong with a 2 stroke

2 strokes racing karts tend not to run at idle, so don’t beat yourself up about not running at low rpm, it’s common for them to cut out at low rpm, but with some throttle it should be fine

Sucks isn't running well yet. Kt100s are stupid fast. So fast I had to take mine off the kart and put a predator on it so I could trust the wife on it XD. Good video guys I can't wait until this thing is rippin.

KT100's are really not stupid fast fast (not saying not too fast for the wife though) . As a Jr we ran KT100's unrestricted before moving to A and Super A then shifters once I was 16

Put a gasket set in the carb The pulse diaphragm might have dried up and gone a bit hard, and or water inside (power washing a kart is not such a good idea)

First thing after establishing spark and compression before taking carb apart count your high jet low jet turns to full in to seat make note of them .. Always start with high setting about a turn to 1.5 turns to start ... Tear carb completely down soak in a carb cleaning solvent like briggs and stratton or such submerged if possible...blow out all jets with high pressure air... replace fuel diaphragm and seals . It should run ... The original settings should be close as a rule .. Another thing mechanics tend to over look is the crankcase seal its very important on a 2 stroke motor since that downward vacuum stroke on piston activates the fuel pump diaphragm.. .... good luck

Carb rebuild and a new plug for sure. Looks like a walbro wb19 carb? It will need a rebuild. Rebuild it and you’ll be sorted. I used to race formula tkm using these carbs. Keep it super clean aswell. Take the head off and make sure the piston ring isn’t gummed up. But your problem will definitely be the carb. Hit me up for any advice.

There's no 2 stoke oil in starting fluid and a 2 stroke engine is basically the same as a four stroke, spark fuel fire the only difference is it uses reeds instead of valves you boys keep messing around with engines and you will end up being pros it's really cool seeing you youngsters into this type stuff keep it up

Low needle needs opening so it gets fuel to idle on.. High speed needle is for top end so leave the high needle alone for now and unscrew low end till it runs then adjust idle screw and go from there

ah, a late 80's Margay. Can't remember when they first started running the front fairings. Would love to know the history behind this kart. Looks like it had it's share of WKA races from that era. There's LOT'S of information on yamaha's out there. Their still run on a national level in some series with the 4 hole can, instead of the pipe. I really don't condone running in a parking lot or street. Take it to a track, and then see what it can do. As many said, if you have any questions or need parts hit up Woltjer Racing Engines, or Comet Kart Sales and take a trip to New Castle Motorsports Park, , they've been in the sport for a long time, great people, great facility. Good luck

lol 16:1 in a KT100 believe it or not. This thing won't start because they don't have the carb setup right. I've got 7 of these engines in my garage. We still race them today.
