I can also see this working no gi, getting the first over neck clinch and switching fully to push the head while entering the osoto. Will try =D Thank you!!!
I've had a lot of success with this from collar tie, or collar tie+arm pin, or collar tie+wizzor and head control for a bit of distance. Khabib has hit a couple nice Osoto as well.
OSoto gari is a huge part of MCMAP and it shows up in GU women empowered and obviously I learned it in Judo too. Bro! I watched Jason Morris's wrestling highlight video! That dude just did osoto to people st will from every direction. I'm totally fascinated now and want to know more SO BAD!
The step is proportional to how far your opponent is, judo is always harder when you are further fro your opponent. If a big step is needed you are probably to far away.
O Soto Gari works very well in self-defense and street fighting. 1. It’s one of the most simple techniques and easy. 2. It’s what most people least expect.
If head control is the most important factor on the upper body side, would it be effective for me to plant my palm under my opponent's jaw and push from there? That would seem much harder to resist than any collar grip.
Sensei, what is the purpose of practicing 'traditional' osoto with the large step if it doesn't look like that in randori or competition? My dream is to have an osoto gari like Yasuhiro Yamashita and Ono. Could you maybe make a video of Ono's variation of Osoto?
The 'traditional' approach is better for self defense, and emphasis on stepping up to the uke is important when you are fighting with striking involved.
99% of osoto gari tutorials or "how to fix osoto gari" on RU-vid are still teaching the traditional way. We're finally seeing a turnaround where more people are realizing there's literally 0 evidence traditional osoto gari works against a resisting opponent at all, but it's a very slow, change-resistant situation. It seems even the adaptive sport styles have some bias towards adhering to tradition.
